PK, NC, L and R sets - What did they become?

Post by GriffinRoads1 »

Hi all.
I'm doing some reserach on the S sets and am trying to figure out which cars were from which type of train. Obviously they're mostly all gone now, but there's still a decent amount left. (plus it just helps to at least know what happened to them.)

I know of NC, L and R sets eventually all forming into S sets, I know of the PK sets that were hauled around Wollongong and I know that L1 and 2 were formed into R36. According to some fleet lists out there, DT1 (the 2 car set used at Lewisham) was from R42.

What cars were turned into what sets is basically the crux of the question. Would love to know the answer, if anyone has some old fleet lists or rosters that would be great.
Thanks in advance, regards, Griffin.

S car sets were never fixed formations with carriages replaced in sets as maintenance needs required. So when the 2, 3 and 6 car sets were disbanded they just went into the general pool. As to what type of carriages made up each type. the NCs were Goninan carriages, the L sets and PK sets Comengs.

R sets were 6 car versions of S sets. So 4x R sets mostly became 3x S sets.

DT1 at Lewisham used to still have its R42 plate on it, probably been souvenired or painted over by now?

Thanks for the info, but I should have worded my question better. I was asking for (e.g. R12 became S29 and half of S35 (this is a fictional example)).

I think there might have been a couple of "Super R" sets, configured with 4xC and 2xT ?

I believe that was an R set with four motor cars in the consist.

Yeah, that's what boronia said, 4 control motor cars and 2 trailers as CTCCTC

As opposed to your regular R set of a passenger-confusing CTTCTC or, for a few and for a time, CTTCDC

A similar thing happened to the V sets, V60 and up were made up of CTTC(DT)C or CTTCC(DT). Something like that. At one point TEN car sets ran on the CCN. Would have been crazy to see, but looking at how the D sets are planned to have 6+4 sets it might become quite normal again.

For years afterwards, a number of driving trailer cars still bore the scares of being fitted with generators to run the auxiliary systems on the Wollongong trains, with rust stains and holes from the brackets that held the generator exhaust pipes in place, visible. As the D cars got their cabs ripped out and converted to trailers, these scars disappeared.
