So you found it eh?it's been in that spot for several months now.I'm amazed he or she has been able to get away with sticking it there.Love to know the story behind that.
You must be pretty thrilled about this find Leopard 1543.For once ,a delapidated ex govt bus not out in the middle of nowwhere ,but in an STA stronghold area!

It was a bit of a surprise "Swift 584" to find a fully grown double decker bus in suburbia
And as you say I also don't know how they get away with having it parked there.
Maybe as it has plates on it

Why can't they park it there.. it is on there property as such?
Thought you only need a permit if parked on the street?

The property is a small block of units so what would the other residents make of it?Mark V wrote:Why can't they park it there.. it is on there property as such?

Yes the bus does have plates on it so there is no real legal reason for it not to be there but it swallows up nearly all the parking space! It's quite an extraordinary sight in the middle of suburbia, especially in Maroubra.
Good photos BTW Leopard.I took a couple of shots myself not long ago but I think you did a better job.

Fair enough, but think you will find its not actually connected to the units in the background and is actually on the property of the two story concrete house.Swift 584 wrote: The property is a small block of units so what would the other residents make of it?

I know they are using 1081 as a new type letter box or a garden gnome route660.

That 2 story concrete house is a block of units too.Mark V wrote:

I suppose the only problem would be from residents complaining that they can't see the Frangipani growing in front of the bus. The council won't say much as the bus is not blocking the foot path. I just love the fly screens applied to the top deck and the tacky 70s style Venetian blind dangling at an angle in the rear window of the top deck.
How long has this bus been out of Government service and it's still wearing its uniform? You would think that AEC decker would've been on to this like a rat-up-a-rope!

On 16 March 1870, bushranger Harry Power and Ned Kelly stuck up and robbed Mr M'Bean! Out of time, Bean?

Re: {UTA} An Atlantean on route 377 at Maroubra!
AEC Decker is sure that the last Atlantean to operate a 377 (or 399 as it was then), would have been in the late 1980 as a two man operation (driver and conductor). So leopard1543 is just stretching the truth a little bit.leopard1543 wrote:1081 (yesterday) at Maroubra Beach on route 377
AEC Decker first saw this bus parked on the street close to where it is now, about 18 months or more ago. It looked pretty tired and sad then.On Air wrote: How long has this bus been out of Government service and it's still wearing its uniform? My records show that 1081 was a 1984 withdrawal. On Air wrote:..................How long has this bus been out of Government service and it's still wearing its uniform? You would think that AEC decker would've been on to this like a rat-up-a-rope!

Unless maybe the owner of the Atlantean is the landlord and the owner of the units which is one reason why the bus is parked there ?Swift 584 wrote:The property is a small block of units so what would the other residents make of it?Mark V wrote:Why can't they park it there.. it is on there property as such?

Re: {UTA} An Atlantean on route 377 at Maroubra!
From the photos, it looks a bit like the bus crashed through the fence and into the building
Perhaps the crew didn't report it at the time, and no-one has noticed the bus is missing !!
Reminds me of an incident at Waverley back in the 60s. A driver "borrowed" an u/f because he was in a hurry to get home to Seven Hills. He left the bus parked around the corner, but the first the DGT knew of it was several days later when some woman rang up to complain that the bus was parked across her driveway and she hadn't been able to get her car out all week.

Re: {UTA} An Atlantean on route 377 at Maroubra!
Did he leave the bus in Seven Hills or did he just drive it a short distance from Waverley depot to get a head start on his trip to Seven Hills?
When you dsay a driver was he an employee of DGT or was he an outsider that went in an nicked the bus?

No they wouldn't, they would try to get the bus back to the depot, put it in the stack and hope no one would notice the damage.boronia wrote:From the photos, it looks a bit like the bus crashed through the fence and into the building

A government bus in Seven Hills in those days would totally out of place.boronia wrote:Reminds me of an incident at Waverley back in the 60s. A driver "borrowed" an u/f because he was in a hurry to get home to Seven Hills.
What if the bus broke down the other side of Parramatta ?.
Randwick Leopards were often used as weekend removalist vehicles and sometimes out of their local area.

Re: {UTA} An Atlantean on route 377 at Maroubra!
Sorry, a bit ambiguous. The bus was dumped in Seven Hills. It was a DGT driver, he was traced from his personnel records as living near to where the bus was found.Swift 584 wrote:Did he leave the bus in Seven Hills or did he just drive it a short distance from Waverley depot to get a head start on his trip to Seven Hills?

You mean he just took it and left it for the DGT to discover? No thought on getting it back?Gives you some idea of the mentality of some DGT staff back then!
Having said that ,I have heard other mind boggling stories of driver's hi jincks in my time.

It was a bit of an embarrassment for the shed staff at the time, because they were supposed to do a "stocktake" every day, and this wasn't picked up.

Back on the Atlantean double decker,I wonder why they chose to use those taillights instead of using the round ones seen on the Leopard?
An unexpected move from an authority that traditionally values commonality where possible.
I'm glad ,as an enthusiast, they didn't .I like these taillights.
