[CHN] Trolleybuses in Guangzhou

Post by superyhk »

It seems that some boardmates are interested in the trolleybuses in Guangzhou.
Therefore, I post this topic to give a brief introduction to the trolleybuses in Guangzhou.

The trolleybus in Guangzhou started service in 30th September,1960, which ran between Yuexiu Park and Dadongmen.
After nearly 50 years development, still, it is the only trolleybus system in the Guangdong Province.
Currently there are altogether 14 trolleybus routes in guangzhou, which are numbered 101-114.
All trolleybus routes are operated by the Guangzhou Trolleybus Company Limited.
The fare of a single journey of the trolleybus is RMB 1 for non air-conditioned trolleybus and RMB 2 for air-conditioned trolleybus.

Here are some introductions for each model of trolleybuses which are currently existing in Guangzhou.

Shanghai SK561G
SK561G was an articulated trolleybus which was introduced in the late 1980s.
The trolleybus was withdrawn from service in 1998 and being preserved by the Guangzhou Museum.
It is believed that it is the last SK561G surviving uptill now and the last articulated trolleybus in the Guangdong Province.

Guangzhou GZK5100
GZK5100 was built locally and introduced to service in 1993.
Most of them are retired and scrapped in the early to mid 2000s and some of them were survived and become the training fleets.
However I'm sorry to say that the last two GZK5100 was withdrawn from the training fleet in early May this year
and the current status of those two GZK5100 were unknown. Probably they have been scrapped already.

Shanghai SK5102GP
SK5102GP was introduced in 1997 which were acting as the main force in the trolleybus fleets between late 1990s to early 2000s.
All the SK5102GP were retired this year. Luckily there are two survivers had become the training fleet to replace the two GZK5100 memtioned above.

Shanghai SK5105GP
SK5105GP was introduced in 1998. Like the SK5102GP, SK5105GP was also a main force between late 1990s to early 2000s.
The appearance of SK5102GP and the SK5105GP are similar. It can be distinguish them through difference of the side winodws of the two model.
Some of the SK5105GP has been withdrawn in these two years, still there are some running on route 101, 103, 105 and 106.

Also this is an air-conditioned example of SK5105GP.

Shanghai SK5105GP-1
SK5105GP-1 was introduced around 2000-2001. The is the last batch of trolleybuses in Guangzhou which is branded with Shanghai's name.

Sunwin SWB5105GP-1
SWB5105GP-1 was introduced aroung 2002-2004. This model does not differ much from the SK5105GP.
The main difference is the minor changes in the appearance and the brand name, where Shanghai has change their name to Sunwin.

Zhujiang (Denway) GZ5101
The GZ5101 is another model which built locally in Guangzhou after the GZK5100.
It is also the first batch of trolleybus which all are fitted with air-conditioned system.

Guangtong GTQ5110DGJ3
GTQ5110DGJ3 was introduced in the mid-2007 and there are total 19 of them have been built.
The design of the GTQ5110DGJ3 is by the Guangzhou Trolleybus Co. Ltd. and the trolleybuses are built by Guangtong, Zhuhai.
It is the first batch of low-entry trolleybus model in Guangzhou, first batch of trolleybus which Guangtong has ever built,
as well as the first batch of trolleybus which are fitted with air suspension.

The offical name of this model by the Guangzhou Trolleybus Co. Ltd. is "Classic Star I"(典雅之星).

Denway GZ5110
GZ5110 was introduced in the late-2007 and there are total 27 of them have been built.
It is also designed by the Guangzhou Trolleybus Co. Ltd. but this time the trolleybues are built by Denway, Guangzhou.
The offical name of this model by the Guangzhou Trolleybus Co. Ltd. is "Classic Star II".

The SK5105GP trolleys you look at them they look like a Optare Excel low floor motor bus with trolley poles well the front cowling at least according to trolleymotion website there is quite a lot of trolley bus systems throughout China but I see Bejing had brought new trolleybuses for service for when they had the olympic game and they are a nice looking artic trolley.

The SK5102GP/SK5105GP are copying the appearence of the Optare Excel.

As far as I know, some Chinese cities do not operate any trolleybus in the urban area.
The trolleybus systems in those cities are established in the coal mines in the suburban districts,
serving the staves of the mines to travel between the residental areas and the mines.
I think those cities with such kind of "staff serving" trolleybus are indicated as only having 1 trolleybus route in the list of the trolleymotion website.

Many thanks and glad this is still available on line to guide me on research into old photos from around 2007 that my daughter took. I did have a lot of info gathered back then but all lost in a hard drive crash in 2014. Fortunately I still had all my photos on CD. Regards, Peter Trevor
