Just a quick one while we wait for the full set of Term 1 changes: a Fremantle Free Transit Zone will be introduced along South Terrace all the way to Douro Road from the start of February.

Unlike on buses in the Perth CBD, it will still be a requirement to tag on and off with a SmartRider or other contactless device.
Catch a Traklink bus and you're on the train.

Fail to see why this doesn't encompass all of Fremantle given the Freo Traffic Bridge closure is being touted as a sort of doomsday.

No doubt this is related to quelling some lingering angst in the community about the loss of the Freo CAT rather than actually trying to attract patronage on the rail line during the bridge closure.

Term 1: more services in Fremantle (as expected) and a couple of inner Armadale Line routes, but fewer services in the middle-to-outer northern suburbs. Also, route 467 will be altered to better serve the growing area of Sinagra.

It'll be interesting to see if any of the Fremantle services will stick around after the bridge reopens.

I expect the 502, 910 and 915 changes will stick; the 915 and 502 have had constant tweaks over the last ten years to accommodate the phenomenonal amount of students travelling to CBC, John Curtin and Melville SHS, as well as students travelling to Bull Creek for an onward connection.

The 2-4pm period on the 502 had been "busy" for many years pre-pandemic without any upgrades (or better use of the plethora of articulated buses Palmyra has, for that matter). Sounds like the change finally addresses this, but as always, one always hopes there is some degree of pressure put on the contractors to utilise their higher-capacity vehicles more effectively!

So I guess this means no more 107/995 interlining or crossovers.

It probably doesn't stop it altogether (although they could ring fence the 107 if really desperate) but will stop the formalised one-seat journey... Perhaps with the traffic impacts a bus completing a 107 will have a larger buffer between trips, so instead of continuing almost immediately on a 995, it effectively waits until the one after?

Officially, a formal bus to bus connection is 2mins, so if a bus waits 10mins before continuing on a 995, it's not really appropriate to advertise it as a continuing service. As it's been some time since the 995's introduction, there'd now be data on passengers utilising the through-service. Were it really popular, I'd wager this change mightn't have happened - but that's only my speculation.

Surprised the 534 lasted 9 years, to be honest. Not sure what the basis for its creation was, although it often found itself on the receiving end of artics, much like the old 522 - neither of which ever came even remotely close to needing them!

That would be because the artic bus was required somewhere else in that drivers shift. Fairly common practice.

Updated timetables are now available for all bus routes to Midland, effective 22 February to coincide with the new station opening.

The most notable changes are:
  • Route 307 will be altered to serve new a housing development along Broadmeadows Dr
  • Certain trips on route 321 will be converted to route 322 with a deviation to Mayhew Rd. Only two trips from Midland to Mundaring (and no trips at all in the inbound direction) remain
  • Route 322 will now run a consistent hourly frequency on Saturday afternoons

And an incredibly wasteful one at that. Artics running round Aubin Grove and surrounds empty, while other buses from the same depot would run empty all the way to Perth and leave full. Worse still, school trips would end up on nightshifts, resulting in artics out all night carrying fresh air while burning more diesel, tyres and other consumables than a rigid would for the same outcome.

I realise there's a cost in returning a bus to depot, restricting certain bus types to certain routes (which may also run up against software limitations), or even niche cases like these leading to a lower operating cost overall, but in the case of buses only being useful once or twice a day during school terms, with the buses' capacity otherwise being squandered, it's perfectly valid to question if the higher capacity couldn't be put to better use elsewhere on the network. This is especially important when there's been reluctance to procure articulated buses, not to mention make use of them where there's a demonstrated need beyond school trips (950, Perth Stadium, the 990).
