2024 SA Transport observations

Post by The Phonj »

A New Year is upon us; Congratulations!! We all made it through the old one :D

Reviewing 2023.....
Torrens Transit introduced two Foton Hydrogen buses to the streets; 1788 and 1789. These buses are based at Morphettville depot.
All electric Scania C250EB/Bustech 'VST' bus 5801 had entered service, based at Torrens Transit's MIle End depot.
A-City electric train 3034 entered service, marking the end of the 12 train/36 car order of electric trains for the Gawler line. All Gawler train services are now operated by electric train sets.
Some 3000 class railcars have been fitted with batteries and now operate as hybrid trains; with the diesel motor cutting out while stationary at stations and not cutting in until the train is in motion.
Construction on the line to Port Dock has commenced, with the National Railway Museum operating its last train from the "Jackett's" platform in July. Work has continued on the project, with an amount of track having been laid.

Please post your South Australian transport observations here that wouldn't seem to warrant their own thread.

I hope that all have a prosperous and happy new year for this 2024!

SouthLink Scania L94UB/Volgren CR224L 3269 (the first one) was retired from metro service following the 11:15 838H yesterday (9 January 2024). It will be joining 3270, 3310, and 3311 at LinkSA Murray Bridge, presumably for Monarto Zoo duties.

There were some (so far) unsubstantiated claims this bus was the original 6004 with Transport for Brisbane, which never entered service... Had seen it a couple of times around the south-side on test drives in its cleanskin livery quite some time ago.

If it is the same bus, I hope they've managed to chase away whatever gremlins stopped this bus operating in service the first time round!

Busways electric bus trial

Busways, our bus operator in Southern Adelaide, is currently trialling a new electric bus. The Yutong is the first zero emissions bus to hit the road in the outer south, providing passengers with a smoother, quieter and more comfortable ride.

The two-month trial will inform future energy efficient transport options across the Adelaide Metro network.

Saw MAN 18.280 bus 1502 back in service on Friday (28/06). Must have recently returned from Mid North. Am wondering if this is due to the large number of buses soon to be heading to Sydney to work the Bankstown Rail subs

A great lumpy frequency for the railway between Adelaide and Woodville

The end is near for route 115 - according to the book Adelaide's Public Transport, the first 180 years (T Wilson, J Radcliffe, C Steele 2018) it was first introduced as a short working number in 1988, and has been a regular timetabled number since 2001. With the 117, 118, 141, and 142 all running every half an hour during the day/hourly on weekends it seems a missed opportunity to not permanently link one with the other. Instead the 117 is linked with the 142 for most of the day on weekdays, but the 141 for most of the day on weekends (and vice versa for the 118).

So lumpy that one cannot easily work out frequencies but I am wondering me being a devils advocate here will the Port Dock line be single railcar running which can be done because we still have 3000s available.
The grange is normally a 2 car set as is from memory OH services and Belair is 2 car set.
Question is how well patronage fair on the Port Dock line now that some Le Fevre peninsula residents north of Glanville have a somewhat connections with trains at Ethelton, Glanville and Port Dock.
However let the fun begin and is there going to be a reopening ceremony at Port Dock station. I alway thought now a Le Fevre Loop could have been done with Port Dock station as a terminus with a two way loop serving both Victoria and Military Roads at the same time with some via West Lakes and Semaphore (u turn available at Semaphore for that reason) however run it to Osborne and on cruise days to Outer Harbor.

Totally agree re a Peninsula loop service something similar to the old 333/336 to start at Port Dock and serve West Lakes, Semaphore and even bring back connection options at Ethelton/Glanville to give people in the area some good options. Who knows maybe further down track this may be something they will look at

Noting after midnight services timetables for outer south and east west and north south corridors have the new After midnight logo on it which looks not bad in my opinion simple but effective.

Just a quick look at 507 and 176/178/578/N178 timetable they are dated 25th August 2024 as well. There are probably others lying around on the website. Wonder what the changes are apart from not having Temporary on the front cover of them.

A few that I’ve seen

A few 540’s in the afternoon peak added back to the 540/541 timetable (possibly mornings too, I haven’t checked)

The two 544’s from Golden Grove to the City in the afternoon are back, returning Ladywood Rd to 15 min service till 1830.

H22 from Wattle Park has some very minor timing adjustments
The weekdays 0717 service pushed back by 3 minutes to 0720

An additional 6 services from Wattle park on weekdays in the afternoons at some slight odd times (not sure if they’re from the pre may 2023 timetables) although 3 services appear to start at stop 18 the instead of 21

H22 from Henley beach south has an additional full length service starting 0711

H20 - The current 1525 service from Glenelg to paradise now appears to start at stop 12 ANZAC Hwy at the same time is currently passes (1537)

It looks like the first Scania NBG Hybrid K320HB has been delivered. The bus has appeared in a couple Adelaide Metro social media posts:

https://www.facebook.com/share/r/v5EYQAcEh5LGYcug/
https://www.facebook.com/share/p/6HHfE3vWgEXERr6U/

It looks like it features:
(1) a redesigned roof-top battery pod (now shorter, a different shape, and set further back).
(2) the Advanced Driver Assistance System, apparent through the external sensors.
(3) full-width driver protective screen
