C-Series/TP4004 Testing Double Stack - 16/08/24

Post by Bus Suggestions »

Late yesterday morning, I was made aware of C-Series set 132 (the sixth-built, and most recently handed over to the PTA) doing test runs on the Airport Line. Given that I had to be in the area for other reasons, I elected to pack my D3100 and wait for a good photo opportunity:

Set #132 seen pulling into Claisebrook towards the city.

Very chill driver and supervisor! :D

I'm reliably informed that set 132 proceeded to turn back at Leederville sidings and do a run to Cockburn.

I know opinions on the trains vary, but it's nice to see some much needed capacity added to the network, and I was glad to get another chance to use the camera either way. However, while I was reviewing the shots, I noticed something new in the distance...

By pure luck, TP4004, the first BZL for the Perth CATs entered Graham Farmer Fwy mere minutes after 132 left!

I then tried to follow it, heading to the busport, before being informed that it had gone to Leederville instead. I then decided EQBS would be a good place to wait with chargers already installed in the layover area, so headed there... just in time to see it run through the repositioning road and into layover

I did get to talk to another enthusiast there, who'd actually taken note of its testing runs over the past week, and recommended we go to Queens Gardens carpark, where it would do 3 laps via Horatio St and give us a better opportunity for a photo:

Marginally out of focus, but an attempt nonetheless as it turns left from Horatio St onto Waterloo Cr.

Uphill stop tests on Horatio St provided a good opportunity for static shots, but there's already some of those...

And turning right onto Waterloo, returning back to the depot.

The choice of the first Perth CAT being a full-size (12.3m) rigid baffled me somewhat, as the amount of space needed to take a tight corner was very noticeable. Nevertheless, it was nice to see the new CAT prowling the streets to cap off a good day of unexpected spotting, and I'll be looking forward to seeing how these buses are set up in passenger service... better than set 130 is, I hope.
I'd post any important, bus-related links I had, but they're outdated anyways.
