You'll most likely be seeing them for the next 20-25 years, unless the 10 year electric bus promise come true.

Don't forget 3121ST through 3129ST, which adorn the Electric Elements at Waverley. The ST plates will probably survive as long as them, unless they are swapped beforehand.

A good tribute to the depots and areas government bus origins. They should keep them going.

So I've apparently found an ex STA MK I for sale on Facebook, strangely the private registration plates it's said to be on belong to a 1995 Ford Falcon that the registration was cancelled back in 2008. It's currently located in Foster Victoria according to the sellers location & they want $6000 for it.

Former STA MK I 1893, the rego plates it appears to be on in the photo is (AP76LK), Fleet-list last reports this MK I was at Singleton as a Motorhome (not too sure when that update was made).

Image

I had to upscale the sellers image since the photo they did post was in extremely low quality.

If I might ask... what possessed the STA to do away with the attractive, and rather effective headlights typically seen on the O305 and use what is pictured?

I suspect it would have been one of the subsequent owners who did that after some mishap. https://fleetlists.busaustralia.com/sta ... search=MM1

Do you mean the standard issue single headlights vōv front like Perth O305s had or are you referring to the ovoid dual headlight surrounds here instead of the original rectangular surrounds?
I personally thought the dual headlights with the original plastic rectangular surrounds looked very modern and state of the art looking and found the original look with the single larger headlights made the bus look older fashioned to me, even though they were chosen so as to make use of more affordable generic headlight suppliers.
I always had assumed they were Mercedes issued. They certainly made Sydney's unique.

Sydney's govt Mercs always seemed to lack the aesthetics of the Perth 305s in my opinion. I don't know whether it was the inability to specify bodies where the passengers windows were both uniform and evenly spaced (without random gaps) or quite what it was - of course purely a matter of subjective opinion and I'm sure Sydney enthusiasts who grew up in the 80s found that slapdash approach to window spacing endearing. Its a trend that seemingly hasn't quite been stamped out - witnesss one operator procuring Volgrens with the rearmost nearside passenger window covered over, or the VSTM's at Waverley which reverted to old habits of unevenly spaced windows and blank walls next to some seats.

I'm not entirely sure I'd call Perth's original Merc headlights effective though - high beam just increases the light level from one flickering candle to one and a half candles at best! :D

Perhaps the example I steered just had the benefit of some mods or good TLC. I certainly found it far more efficacious than the blueish LEDs on much newer buses; although nothing remotely compares with the "LET THERE BE LIGHT!" effect of the high-beams on a Perth O405NH. 8)

The dual square jobbies on STA NSW Orana bodied Volvos and Scanias were very effective at turning night into day.
One driver told me he always preferred a Scania L113 to a.Mercedes or MAN for night work 20 or so years back, whereas it personally didn't fuss me, but I knew what he meant after he told me.
