Optare sounds like the outcome of a Leyland truck & bus manufacturing plant closure
Here is the Wikipedia entry on the company

And here's the company overview/about entry on their website

MCW and Leyland Bus were the last of a breed.

It's not the most beautiful thing but if it does the job well. There is a need for this size bus for many services, unfortunately unfulfilled. I haven't ridden one of these but I was impressed by the Tempo - better designed inside and out than many of our locals.

Why would I need to get serious? I'm not the one stuck in the ancient past.

Just because MCW, Leyland, AEC and any of the other older British buses are no longer around does not mean the newer stuff doesn't have its place and detracts from national pride.

It's a bit like Blues Point Tower. The people inside don't worry about what it looks like outside.

Must admit the aesthetics of the Optare Solo aren't exactly up my alley either. For a start, that curved windscreen, and the frog or baby-like 'face' - yuck. It's like somebody took a Gee Wiz and found a way to make it into a bus.

Without having ridden or driven one, hard to say if it's a case of (attempted!) style over substance. Have heard the turning circle of these is atrocious, owing to the lack of overhang combined with length and perhaps the steering lock.
