I think it was the mechanical parts he was mainly referring to, not the body parts.
Maybe a scrap dealer in the U.K has useful parts already out which would could possibly be crated here in a bulk lot much more economically than complete locos. Definitely worth exploring if NSW wishes to life extend the XPT as bits aren't exactly available at Priceline.

Built to a different loading gauge, different coupler height etc. Would only be of value for parts, but most of the biggies like bogies, cooling systems differ. All of the withdrawn examples are MTU powered, the Paxman VP185 examples (that the XPT has) will all remain in service into next year.

Problem is that it has now been 10 years since they were last rebuilt and a lot of the components are approaching the end of their lives, hence the reliability problem is increasing. They are going to be needed probably for another 5 years, TfNSW may need to bight the bullet and sanction overhauls.

Once T6 Carlingford Line is permanently closed, all other lines will stay the T number that they are now. However, the T6 will be skipped - T5 will be followed by T7.

Well they aren't averse to changing line designations, so I'd expect a reshuffle that could include moving every subsequent number over by one or just make T9 T6 as it's the newest and highest number anyway. 9 and 6 aren't so different, so it won't take long to get used to it.

If anything it's an excuse to change the map more significantly. T7 and the Parramatta River can both become straight and neat with a properly sized T7 label, and the Metro could use the empty space to get rid of the weird dog leg at Epping.

Rumor was that the T2 Inner West would get the T6 designation

Some major collapse on T1 this morning according to metro users. A signal issue at Wynyard.

My BMT service from Central ran all stops Blacktown to Penrith. The normal Penrith service at this time was shown as 40 minutes late, and skipping even Strathfield and Parramatta.

That makes sense. Should make it more frequent into Parramatta too!

Not to mention - it only dawned on me the other day (despite the TT now being well bedded down) Granville now gets one train to Parramatta during the off peak every 30 minutes via the T2 given no T1 trains stop there on weekdays..... when I passed through Granville (even infrequently) in days bygone, I thought quite a few passengers boarded at Granville and subsequently alighted at Parramatta.

No doubt those passengers now use the Cumberland line to get directly to Parramatta?

Yeah, in some cases, it would be quicker to travel from Granville to Merrylands (T2) and then interchange Merrylands to Parramatta (T5).

Or, if you'd prefer an alternate one-seat journey to Parramatta, there is also the M91, in addition to the infrequent 906.

Extra Morning Peak Service for Popular T5 Cumberland Line
Published16 Oct 2019
From next January, south-west train customers will benefit from a new direct morning peak service from Leppington to Schofields via Parramatta, boosting capacity and making journeys more comfortable on the popular T5 Cumberland Line.

Minister for Transport Andrew Constance said demand for T5 Cumberland Line services has surged, with 30 per cent more south-west customers catching trains towards Parramatta this year.

“By boosting capacity on an increasingly busy part of the network, customers across the south-west region including Glenfield, Liverpool and Cabramatta will enjoy a more comfortable and convenient morning commute,” Mr Constance said.

“Customers from the T8 South Line between Macarthur and Macquarie Fields will also benefit from the new service as it provides an extra connection at Glenfield to T5 services headed towards Parramatta and further west.”

The T5 Cumberland Line has become more popular since it was extended to start at Leppington in November 2017.

“With modern air-conditioned trains, direct links from Leppington to Parramatta and Blacktown, as well as late night and weekend services, demand on this part of the network continues to grow. That’s why we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to do everything we can to improve your daily commute.”

The new direct all-stops morning peak service departs Leppington at 7.07am, arriving at key stations such as Parramatta at 7.49am, Blacktown at 8.07am and Schofields at 8.17am.

The existing 7.21am all stops Leppington to Schofields service will instead depart at 7.37am, arriving at key stations such as Parramatta at 8.19am, Blacktown at 8.37am and Schofields at 8.47am.

“By giving customers an extra direct morning peak train and adjusting other services, the gap between trains will reduce to every 30 minutes during the peak period, and in some cases, the wait will be just 16 minutes,” Mr Constance said.

These improvements will take effect from Monday 6 January.

So apparently the Hunter line is having trackwork tomorrow between 9:45 AM - 11:45 AM. It looks like this might've been a last moment thing as it's not currently mentioned in the https://transportnsw.info/future-trackwork-calendar as of this post.

I only found it out via Transport NSW alerts
https://transportnsw.info/alerts/details#/6041084

And their still planning on having rail replacement next weekend anyway?

The one for next weekend reads totally different so I suspect they are not related.

Family got caught in a trackwork upset last night. The south coast line was bustituted from Central to Waterfall. The bus got to Waterfall and the train was seen waiting at the platform, still ahead of the departure time. Then the bus driver stuffed around for a couple of minutes parking the bus before letting passengers off and the station staff gave up waiting and dispatched the train before the passengers got to the platform. Next train in two hours under the lovely lower south coast weekend timetable. I gather the station staff regretted their decision after being "spoken to" by passengers and somebody in the railways rustled up a train from somewhere about half an hour later (a commandeered positioning movement?) which went only as far as Wollongong, from where rescue efforts by car by passengers' families had to be organised.

Ringing 131500 produced the response that people should have caught the buses for the previous train (an hour before?!) to ensure they got to Waterfall with "plenty of time to spare". At that point I decided it wasn't worth lodging a complaint as TfNSW's attitudes are obviously not going to change from previous experiences. They simply don't act on complaints nowadays.

Looking at the Trackwork Buses for this weekend and for the South Coast there are three options:
50SC: Wollongong, then North Wollongong, Central and return
60SC: Thirroul, then Central and return
70SC: Waterfall, then Central and return
All three with a 30 minute frequency.

If travelling further south from Wollongong, why would anyone take the bus to Waterfall to catch the all stations train?
Also, the train service is only every two hours for stations between Waterfall and Thirroul during the day and every hour after 8:00pm with the altered trackwork timetable.

Just seems like there were more options than you say or the full story hasn’t been given.

I wasn't there, but it's about trains that go to Kiama then connect to Bomaderry. The train that pulled out of Waterfall was a Kiama train connecting to Bomaderry with the next one being two hours later. They were directed at Central onto the 70SC with the advice that it would meet the train at Waterfall, which it did technically but (a) the bus driver took a while to let the passengers off and (b) the station staff (I don't know whether there were bus marshalls at the top of the stairs as well) didn't hold the train until the bus passengers came down from the bus.

There was a minor derailment of some sort in the yard at Campbelltown last night that was causing delays. Not sure what happened, but when I caught a train at about midnight, we had a slow stop/start run taking nearly 15 minutes from Leumeah to Campbelltown.

I was quite impressed that after holding the final Moss Vale departure of the evening for passengers to transfer from the late arriving connecting suburban, the signaller held the late suburban allowing the intercity service to head south first, saving a good 3 or 4 minutes compared to normally when the Endeavour has to wait for a path to follow the suburban to Macarthur.

Obviously there are signallers and there are signallers. In the above mentioned episode at Waterfall TfNSW responded to me that the signaller wouldn't allow the train to be held for the bus that was there and in the process of unloading. Unlike the Campbelltown situation we're talking about a couple of minutes delay.
