Does anyone have any information (no matter trivial) on the Buses which rand from Adelaide Railway to Glenelg via Anzac Highway St. Leonards and onward to Whyte Street Somerton Park in 1948. I Do know Worthley's ran a service through Brighton Road but have no details. Any information about route, times, sections, stops, fares, operator names would be greatly appreciated.
I have a July 1949 Winders and Wadeson bus timetable if anyone requires this information I can just email it.
Thanks Cruso

Re: 1948 Adelaide to Glenelg and Somerton Park DBuses
The services from Adelaide Railway Station to St Leonards (later Graymore) and Somerton (Whyte St) were operated by the Municipal Tramways Trust, mostly using double deck diesel buses of the groups 101-111 (on Dennis, AEC, Leyland and Daimler chaasses built in the late 1930s), and 112-126, all on Daimler CVG6 chasses, built 1947/48.Cruso wrote:Does anyone have any information (no matter trivial) on the Buses which rand from Adelaide Railway to Glenelg via Anzac Highway St. Leonards and onward to Whyte Street Somerton Park in 1948. A service to East Glenelg was previously operated by the South Australian Railways, using open top Garford double deck buses. These buses, and the East Glenelg service (as well as some others) were transferred to the MTT, (I think in the mid 1920s), but the East Glenelg route ceased when the MTT converted the South Terrace railway line to Glenelg to electric trams in 1929.
It resumed to St Leonards around 1938, coinciding with the arrival of the pre-war enclosed double deckers, initially operating from Victoria Square.
The route to Somerton commenced a year or so later.
The terminus was changed to the Adelaide Railway Station by the early 1940s.
The St Leonards route ran via North Terrace, West Terrace, Anzac Highway (through the parklands), then into Nottingham Road (later called West Beach Road, and now called Richmond Road), South Road, Anzac Highway, & Tapleys Hill Road.
There was also a deviation via Stonehouse Ave and Morphett Road, followed by some, but not all St Leonards buses.
The Somerton route ran directly via Anzac Highway, left into Gordon Street, then Partridge Street, right into Whyte Street, terminating on the corner of Whyte Street and Tarlton Street. It then turned right into Tarlton St, then into Broadway, and left into Partridge Street, and as above.
Around 1954, the down route was altered to turn left into Brighton Road, then right into Whyte Street.
Early in 1957, the City route was altered so that 'up' buses turned right into Grote Street, left into King William Street, left into North Terrace, then as before.
In late November 1958, when the last 'streetcar' route to Cheltenham was closed, Somerton/Graymore was linked with the former tram route, continuing along King William Road to North Adelaide, then via the former tram route to Kilkenny, where approximately every second bus turned right into Hanson Road, and then continued to Port Adelaide, replacing the former feeder bus from Kilkenny to the Port. The rest continued down Torrens Road to Cheltenham, then right into Addison Road to Port Adelaide, replacing the tram feeder bus between Cheltenham and the Port.
The next major change occurred around 1980/81, when the Anzac Highway routes were simplified, and extended to incorporate some of the former territory covered by the former private operator Worthleys. So we had route 23 to Seacliff via Tarlton Street and King George Ave, 23M to Marion Shopping Centre via Brighton Road and Dunrobin Ave. These both travelled direct via Anzac Highway. The Graymore section, running via West Beach Road and Stonehouse Ave, was altered to terminate at Glenelg North, as Route 26. This section was done away with altogether (late 1980s?), the Stonehouse Avenue section being replaced by extending theh former Richmond service along Marion Road, then into Anzac Highway, Stonehouse Ave, Morphett Road, Anzac Highway to Glenelg.
This is a very brief summary only - if you like to PM me, I can fill in some of the gaps. Also check out the Adelaide History section on this board, where the Mayor and others, have provided a lot of information about various Adelaide bus routes.
I lived in Plympton, adjacent to Anzac Highway from 1950 to 1973, and these routes, along with the double deckers, and the Regal 111s, and later the famous 'three-door' AECs and Leylands, sparked an interest in buses, which I can't seem to get rid of, despite it having caused me more than a bit of grief along the way!
And I would be very interested in an e-mail copy of your Winders and Wadeson timetable - that name goes back a long way!
Cheers
