Torrens Transit Helping out in ACT

Post by ScaniaK320 »

I have been informed from a good source in Canberra that Torrens Transit (Transit Systems) will be supplying a number of Bus Operators and Buses should the opening of the Light Rail System stall or fail during the opening month (End of April 2019)
The operators will travel by buses to Canberra from Adelaide and will assist with transport of passengers, should there be any issue with the Light Rail Network.
As Torrens Transit owns 51 Adelaide Metro painted buses, some of them will be the units sent over to Canberra for this contract.

Not Sure how the private contractors or ACTION feel about this short term contract?

Do SA drivers have photographic drivers authorities?

How many buses?

Where will they be stored and serviced?

And, most importantly, does Transit Systems hold an ACT Regular Route accreditation? (Hint: no.)

I can answer some of your questions but no all.

Yes SA do have Photo Large Passenger Accreditation's

About 25 buses in total I have been informed
Some of the units heading over from Adelaide are the Ex: Brisbane Mercedes-Benz unit

Not sure as to the location and storage or servicing while there in Canberra.

As they will not be driving a bus route operated by any other company in Canberra, they may not need to have it at this stage, it is listed as Light Rail Shuttles.

It doesn't need to be Transit Systems - Canberra Metro can hold the accreditation. (Which is not to say they don't already; the latest list published is dated Dec 2018.)

In any case, it is a requirement that to operate a bus service which picks up passengers in the ACT, you must be accredited. (Canberra Metro are, or will be, accredited to provide regular route services, but this applies only to "light rail" passenger services. Maybe.)

If the buses are dry hired to Canberra Metro or ACTION then ACT accreditation will not be required.
If Transit Systems have a contract to provide buses and drivers to actually provide the services they will need accreditation.

Plenty of Torrens Transit (and Swan Transit) drivers went to Sydney about a year ago to help in the takeover of the contract area from Sydney Buses and all had applied for and got NSW driver accreditation/authority (or whatever it’s called there) with photos, so no big deal about getting same for ACT.

As someone from a different state who has spent time in Canberra operating a bus service I can tell you that for Torrens to operate their own buses with their own drivers they will need to get ACT accreditation or team up with a local company and operate under their accreditation.

They shouldn't be able to operate on their SA accreditation.

So any more news about this? When can we expect to see these buses in Canberra?

No need. ACT Public Vehicle Driver Authorities are linked to Driver's Licence. You don't need an ACT authority IF you have an equivalent authority from another state.

Given that the Canberra light rail was launched successfully today, and that nothing has been mentioned to Torrens drivers, I’d say this whole “Torrens Transit helping out in ACT” was nothing but a hoax.

For the first 9 days of operations, the light rail in Canberra is operating in parallel to existing bus services, prior to the new bus network commencing on April 29th. I suspect that is their contingency for any teething issues with the trams - if there is a disruption, people can just catch the adjacent bus route running every 5 minutes in peak!

Torrens currently operating without 6 artics (R803-R808) and at least a dozen BusTechs, that have all gone to Southlink for rail subs until early May. So vehicle resources are pretty thin, even though it’s school holidays (and some public holidays) until the end of this week so really can’t see any spare vehicles being available, especially not the 25 that is mentioned earlier in this thread.
If the trams are going to be running in parallel with existing bus services for the first 9 days it sounds like the contingency plan is already there without having to import interstate buses and drivers.

In actual fact 20 Bustechs went from Mile End to Lonsdale--1984-1999,1020-1023.
