That map is correct, it’s interesting that we have a similar loop again today. If I get some spare time over the next few weeks I’ll happily share the other Mt Barker Loop (route 846, c.2000-2002), and the various routes that buses have taken though Mt Barker (the 840 used to go further than the railway station)
First person on 822, 865 (2016 re-route).
Last person on 164, 867, 868

Thanks for the map. Would be nice to have bubbles for 400m walking distance around each stop overlaid :) (Can be done in a GIS package, use OpenStreetMap for roads)

Does anyone know any history of route 601 and 605? (And maybe why 602-604 are missing). Thanks

Gee....you ask about one of the most re-numbered and re-routed services I know of!

I suggest that you search this thread for Routes 609 and 610 to start with. 609 is now today's 601 from Marion to Blackwood.

I do not know dates - but 609 was renumbered 739 at some point, and there was (I think) a 729 scheduled from the city. Both services went to Blackwood. A new route, 728, was introduced to go straight up Sheperds Hill Rd.

Then, at another time this century, the 739 was renumbered 601. At the same time the 197/198 were combined with todays 600/601. Initially, the new 600/601 started at Henley Beach, then cut back to Glenelg, and then cut back to Marion.

The section between Aberfoyle Hub and Old Reynella has been added on , taken off, and then added back on again.

My suggestion is to use the Search on this thread for routes 609,610, 739 and you should be able to piece together the history, as it is well documented.

Though I can quickly tell you about why the 601 started at Henley Beach.

Many years ago there was a cross-suburban route which went from Port Adelaide to Glenelg (and eventually Marino) (33) and return (34). The Glenelg to Marino section was originally numbered 665. (I think). In the 1980's this was renumbered 340.

While it had a few changes around Port Adelaide over time, the 340 ran from Henley Beach to Marion Shops via the current 300 route. A variant was introduced, 345, which went to Flinders Uni.

Sometime in the 2000's, the 340/345 were discontinued and the route split up. Initially, the Henley Beach to Flinders University section was covered by route 110. City to Flinders Uni via Grange Road (current 110) and then the old 345 route to Flinders Uni. This route was designed to connect with the current H30 at Henley Square so passengers could travel to West Lakes.

Eventually the 110 was cut back to Henley Square and through routed with the 600/601. When the 300 was introduced, the 600/601 was cut back to start at Marion.

There was also a period of time that the 600/601 was through routed with the J7.

Just for interest, the last variant of the 340 has been split up as follows
- Port Adelaide to West Lakes was renumbered 350 and has been discontinued. Part of this route is covered by todays 371/372.
- West Lakes to Henley Beach does not exist. The route along Military Rd is covered by today's 112/371/372.
- Henley Beach to Marion is covered by 300.
- Marion to Marino is covered by 640. The bus has been re-routed through Marino and now terminates south of Marino Railway Station. The original Terminus was Marino Rocks Railway Station. The last 340 to run took Diagonal Rd to Seacombe Rd, and not Marion Rd as the 640 does today,

Good work bigrobbo. There were a few 729F services, they operated from the City via South Rd, then Shepard’s Hill Rd and the Eve Rd loop to Blackwood. Similarly, the 728F ran direct via Shepard’s Hill Rd.

These then became the 217 and T217, and are now covered by the G30F.

I might just add that before the 600/601 were extended to Aberfoyle Hub and all Reynella, this section was the 695, 696, 697, 698, and 699.

695- today’s 605
695- today’s 601 between Blackwood and Aberfoyle Hub
697- Blackwood to Aberfoyle Hub via Main Rd and Manning Rd (so 601 through Coromandel Valley, 600 through Aberfoyle Park)
698- today’s 600 between Blackwood and Aberfoyle Hub
699- today’s 600/601 between Aberfoyle Hub and Old Reynella

Prior to this, routes 197 and 198 covered this area. Operating from the City via Unley Rd and Main Rd to Blackwood, then
Route 197 followed the above listed 697
Route 198 followed the above listed 698
These routes both then continued to Old Reynella.

As for dates, without checking relevant sources I’d put approximate dates at:
609 renumbered 739 ~ 1988
739 to 601 (and 738 to 601) was 2008 I think
340 and 345 were broken up in 2006
728/729 to 217 would have been between 2006-2008
217 to G30F in 2009
197/198 to 695-699 between 2005-2007
695-699 to 600/601/605 in 2009
First person on 822, 865 (2016 re-route).
Last person on 164, 867, 868

I seem to have a recollection of a route that travelled from Aberfoyle Hub and did a loop of Oakridge Rd and Homestead Dr before returning to Aberfoyle Hub during the 69x days - although the route number escapes me right now.

Was it the 690? Ran during the day and morning with the RZ19 at nights?

I'll do my best here, but there will be other's who'll know more than I do:

Route's 3 & 4 (which became Route's 258 & 259) followed the same route to Arndale Shopping Centre as the Route 253 does today, then; ( I won't include the through route numbers so as not to confuse you)

Route 3 -- Arndale Shopping Centre, First Ave, Hanson Rd, Torrens Rd, Addison Rd, Grand Junction Rd, Commercial Rd to Port Adelaide

Route 4 -- Arndale Shopping Centre, First Ave, Hanson Rd, Grand Junction Rd, Commercial Rd to Port Adelaide:

The short workings were:
3A -- From the City to Cheltenham via Torrens Rd; From Pt Adelaide to Cheltenham via Addison Rd
3B -- From the City to Kilkenny (Arndale Shops) via Torrens Rd; From Pt Adelaide to Kilkenny via Addison Rd
3C -- ???
3D -- From the City to Grand Junction Rd (assuming it terminated at Port Depot); From Port Depot to Kilkenny or the City via Addison Rd

4A -- From the City to Croydon via Torrens Rd; From Pt Adelaide to Croydon via Hanson Rd
4B -- From the City to Kilkenny via Torrens Rd; From Pt Adelaide to Kilkenny via Hanson Rd
4C -- From the City to Athol Pk via Kilkenny & Hanson Rd
4D -- From the City to Junction Rd (assuming Port Depot) via Kilkenny & Hanson Rd; From Port Depot to the City or Kilkenny via Hanson Rd.

If there's anything that's missing from here, feel free to fill in the blanks. Just as if I've made any mistake's, please correct them.

I can remember 3R services, via the 3 route but terminating at Cheltenham racecourse on race days.

And before Arndale and for the first few years of Arndale buses didn’t use First Avenue. Just Torrens Rd, then right at Hanson Rd for 4 route and straight for 3 route. Even when the 100 route (Circle Line then) commenced operation the start and finish was on Torrens Rd in front of Arndale, both sides of road (north for clockwise and south for anticlockwise). It’s not that many years ago that the long line of bus shelters were removed from the northern side of Torrens Rd in front of Arndale.

Hello again I'm seeking more information about old routes pre 88 this may/is a big ask but I'm after information from
routes 5 right through to routes 34 in particular destinations numbers and short working numbers

Rather than asking route by route I thought one big list if at all possible
I appreciate any help that may be provided and understand if this is way too much

Thank you

Thanks for the extensive detailed information leftyandy76. A few additions/corrections. My memory, happy to be corrected.

32 (via 167 or 168?) originally finished at Novar Gardens, near corner of Pine Av and Bonython Av. Through-routed with route 16 to Glen Osmond. First routes with full-time one man operation. 32 extended to Glenelg (still as route 32) in early 1970s.

28 went via Henley Beach Rd and Seaview Rd, then Beach St to terminus in Military Rd just before Jetty St. Returned to city via Jetty St and Seaview Rd.

28E finished on Trimmer Parade, first extension of 28 just before West Lakes opened. Via Military Rd to Trimmer Pde terminus, to city via Fort St (H30).

29 route was to Kirkcaldy (then a suburb) via George St, South Rd, Grange Rd, left Seaview Rd, left Reedie St to
terminus in Military Rd just north of Reedie St. Through routes with 10 and 11 routes. Not until late 1970s did it terminate Grange Stn. That was via Seaview Rd and Terminus St to Military Rd. The 28H 28J 28K routes also originally went via Seaview Rd and Terminus St to West Lakes.

And in 1960s 28 through routed with 12 to Kensington Gardens (Taylor Tce, Primrose Tce outside then Norwood High School). The H23/H24 terminus at Auldana you refer to only opened in early 1980s as Auldana established.

I thought one of the Kensington Rd routes terminated at the current Wattle Pk H22 terminus on Penfold Rd but not sure on that one.

Originally Route 13 ran all the way up Kensington Road, and turned right at Penfold Road to the current H22 terminus.
When the H22 operated from its current Wattle Park terminus, the 13 became 141 and only went as far as Hallet Road, turned right unril it reached the terminus at Greenhill Road.
Just as a matter of interest the Burnside route and terminus has remained the same since trolley buses ceased in 1963.
Was 13B now 142.

interesting about the Athelstone services.later on we had the 576 and 577 for people who didn't need or want montacute and payneham rd to the city as that was covered by the 179 and was formerly the 176 and 177.the new services worked out faster than the old.
