Re: AOAs in Perth

Post by Dennis96 »

All Over Advertising on motor buses was introduced by the MTT with Leyland Panther 997, the first advertiser being Broadlands Finance. The MTT was very much a customer focussed organisation and their approach to ensuring that intending passengers knew that it was an MTT bus approaching was to carry the MTT logo on the front. As the successor of the MTT, Transperth has the same phiosophy of wanting to ensure that its buses are easily recognisable, but has a slightly more cautious approach by maintaining its full corporate branding on the front.

As a long-term transport enthusiast and somewhat compulsive photographer of transport subjects, I am always pleased when a bus in all over advertising livery comes my way as it is for me more interesting than the standard diet of ordinary colours. And if Transperth can gain some additional revenue from the advertisers, then it is a win win for both myself and them. I'd rather see the advertising buses with standard green and silver on the front than none at all and if this makes the service easier for passengers for whom the government provides public transport, then surely this is what it should all be about. My file names for the transparencies are sef explanatory.

Thanks for posting the photo of 997 in its Broadlands Finance AOA Dennis96. My memory did serve me well in this instance. Great to see your picture of it - just as I remembered it. Truly an AOA, including the roof.

{a slightly loose quote, admittedly ! Made with my apologies to Dennis96 for 'improving' his 'English Expression' ...}

Not entirely accurate / true, Dennis96.
Presumably you have 'forgotten' the Borkum Riff adverts applied to Panther 857 http://www.perthbus.info/report.php?vid=MTT857 and Hino 907 http://www.perthbus.info/report.php?vid=MTT907 ??
Neither of which 'featured' the MTT logo on their fronts ?? As evidenced by your photo of 907, and mine of 857, in the above links ...

As I recall, this livery on these 2 buses led to the MTT getting numerous complaints from (admittedly dopey) pax who had been inconvenienced due to their 'non recognition' of the approaching service bus they wanted, because they (the dopey pax) were foolish / stupid enough to see the bus (857, 907) as a 'delivery truck' for tobacco products. Or something along those lines. And failed to 'hail the driver', too many of whom were also 'dopey, foolish, stupid' enough (and in too many cases 'anti-passenger') to remember / understand exactly why the MTT ran its various bus services for the benefit of the tax-paying community, and consequently drove past without picking up waiting passengers. And yes, history repeats, and repeats, etc, etc ....

Another theory favoured by some observers is that the anti-smoking 'fraternity' was pushing for these adverts to be withdrawn from all 'media', but the MTT was locked in contracturally, and thus could 'only' insist on changes to a limited degree, the net result being application of the MTT logo to the front of AoA buses.

Personally, I suspect the real truth contains greater or lesser amounts of these 'theories', but I remain mystified as to exactly where the 'truth' actually lies.

But I do recall the 2 'Borkum Riff' buses. To this day, I describe the product they advertised as 'Burp'n'Sniff', but I don't remember why in all honesty. It might have been related to the fact I had given up smoking in 1979, just before this advertising campaign began, but such details have vanished from my memory - for some obscure reason.

Thanks, ADX666. Dunno how you do it, to be honest.
Coming up with a slightly 'different' but oddly 'relative' perspective in so many instances, that is ....

Panther 998,

Funny thing is that I had a parent who was a heavy smoker and I thought that I knew all of the brands of tobacco related products, but I had never heard of Borkum Riff until I saw it promoted on MTT buses. Forgot the detail that the B-Riff AOA adverts did not have the MTT logo on the bus fronts. But then I am not always into that degree or minutae of detail.

And for what you call ADX666's "oddly relative perspective in so many instances", I have not twigged to this before although I am somewhat bewildered that ADX666 hasn't wandered over to the northern side of his office building and snapped the progress of the City Link project.

Let's not forget the third Borkum Riff AOA bus, 887.

And how long is it since anyone has seen a Mitsubishi Sigma on the road !!

It will be interesting to see what that location looks like in a couple of months when the new bus transfer station opens alongside the Freeway near the foot of the pedestrian bridge. I don't know if the in bound Cambridge Street services will detour into the transfer station or if they will continue straight through to Loftus Street. May not be possible to get shots of buses on that stretch of carriageway for much longer.

Now that the first "scoop" has been served ,time to dish out the second spoon full of TP1190 in the new ECU AOA at the soon to be "Old above ground WSBS "aka the even older Central Bus Station.

I can't find any earlier reference to 2074's revised iiNet AOA - so have I out-scooped SEB The Dish Gunzel, albeit with a crappy through-the-windscreen shot at Warwick yesterday morning?

Sorry "erb" sorry i mean MTT384,the near side shot you got i think is of the same AOA i got on the off side at Stirling Station back on page 7 .Sometimes its not always easy to get both sides of short lived AOAs , now that one has both sides captured.
And yes TP2051 did a good job on the " Scoop" of 1190 ecu aoa on me, by a few hours . :D

If I had've paid more attention when getting on the bus this evening at Stirling, I could have got 2038 and 2074 (Both Karrinyup AOA Buses) together.
