This isn't exactly a new idea from the council, this line was one of the lines in the 2056 plan slated for 2036. Still good to see someone push for it.

Also, link to council report.

If it is a heavy rail plan, it won’t happen. It won’t get the investment from the Liberals unless it is a metro line where the developers get to hyper-densify the corridor.
An asset of NSW. All opinions/comments are strictly my own.

From memory, this line, or something approximating it, is included in the metro plan. In any case, any new line built will be metro.

It may surprise you, but I agree. It's far more warranted as a metro in the higher density inner city region than the inappropriate Outer Western Sydney metro links with Badgerys Creek on the fringe of the metropolitan area.

Out of interest, why Kogarah rather than Hurstville?

In the plan it talks about Kogarah being a ‘health and education precinct’, which is why it has a bigger dot in that map. Probably because of the big employers in Kogarah like St George Hospital and Westpac, rather than Hurstville being mostly retail and residential. Guess it is seen as a future employment hub?

Also as the best junction point for other connections as seen on the diagram.

There eventually does need to be a North-South rail connection between the St George area and Parramatta/Olympic Park in order to create proper connectivity between different regions. It is one of many routes that will likely needs rail connection in the longer term future, but Kogarah to Parramatta via Bankstown would likely find itself high on that list of priorities.

A link already exist through Enfield. It would need some work to make it passenger train friendly and keep the freight trains happy. But could be done. They have diverted passenger trains through this line from time to time. And in the old day workers train ran through there.Take a look at a Map see how many connections the upgrading of this line would have. Yes it would cost money but a lot less than a totally new corridor.

It might be tempting, but the idea is probably for the line to run where there can be residential development, and the Greater Sydney Region Plan that tonyp mentioned above is also big on protecting industrial uses (like Enfield intermodal) from nearby residential to prevent future residents complaining about noise that was there long before they moved in. Makes sense to me.

Vision of how it may have run along via the Bankstown line in between these localities if V Sets were used: viewtopic.php?p=1063902#p1063902
