NSW Railway Observations 2019
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
Noticed DJM8127 and 8128 that were part of ATP set Y2 but have been stored for a while at the western headshunt at Flemington depot, were in the shed today against the running lines.
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
Observed at Waterfall today: bus drop-off moved to near the station entrance and shelter for former stop in the carpark removed.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
Trackwork today had services from Richmond line operating as T1 to Olympic Park (stopping Parra, Lidcombe, OP). Passengers wanting to go to Merrylands and beyond were told to change at Seven Hills for a ex-Penrith service to Granville, then change to a T2 service. Have to wonder why the Richmond service couldn't have stopped at Granville?
There was also a fairly intense service between Gordon and OP, operating as T7.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
Could be. I recall seeing something about buses from Strathfield to the north.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
The bustitution on T9 was rubbish. Still running to age old stopping patterns when the station stops were not even at the station for North Strathfield and Concord West. Notwithstanding that travel patterns have changed so much since the last 25 years.
Instead, North Strathfield, Concord West and Rhodes pax had to then change at West Ryde to head further north whilst Strathfield, West Ryde, Eastwood all to Hornsby buses flew past.
Seriously, they should just make it Strathfield, all to Rhodes, West Ryde, Eastwood and all to Hornsby to make it run to the main road, then have one other route for Rhodes, Meadowbank, West Ryde, Denistone and Eastwood to make cater for Meadowbank and Denistone.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
Some delays on T1/9/CCN/BMT today due to a fallen tree on the overhead on the Up Main at Newtown. All intercity services were diverted on the Suburban, which caused some congestion. An up T9 service skipped Eastwood and Denistone to make up time, which annoyed a lot of people at Epping (20-30 minute wait for next train). I overheard the station staff saying most pax at Epping are travelling to Eastwood.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
I noticed that on alerts, but the early Bathurst DMU and the following Emu Plains T1 were on time at Penrith, around 1550-1600. Earlier Compass were running buses out of Penrith, possibly to Emu Plains.
I noticed an UP Waratah blocked near Newtown, it appeared to be empty.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
I interesting thing I've noticed with bustitutions in Melbourne is that sometimes the bus stops can be located far-ish from the stations. For example, the bus stops for Frankston Line replacements are all located on Jasper Rd between Glen Huntly and Patterson, a good 400+ metres away from the station. For Meadowbank, I don't think it'll hurt to make some replacement routes stop on Church St/A3 instead of the station, especially if there'll be another route serving the station itself. The only place in Sydney where the bus stop for replacements are located far from the station is Helensburgh, it could be done more often.swtt wrote:Seriously, they should just make it Strathfield, all to Rhodes, West Ryde, Eastwood and all to Hornsby to make it run to the main road, then have one other route for Rhodes, Meadowbank, West Ryde, Denistone and Eastwood to make cater for Meadowbank and Denistone.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
Isn't the night bus network meant to replicate train service? If so isn't Sydenham and Burwood nightbus stops a major trek from the stations there meant to serve?

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
Mostly, but some stops have always been away from the station to reduce the inconvenience for longer runs. If they didn’t stop away from the station, they would probably have decided to skip the stop altogether.Stonesourscotty wrote:Isn't the night bus network meant to replicate train service? Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
I agree about avoiding those painful diversions from the main rd for the sake of reaching the station entrance and the convenience of a minority. Killara and Gordon are prime examples of this. Why make the already less convenient bus service even slower with such pedantry?

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
And yet they quite happily do the loop around Martin Place when the T4 line is shut - which given city traffic and lights can easily add 10-15min versus the 324/325 which also serve Town Hall, Kings Cross and Edgecliff.

Bearing in mind that not all train passengers live within walking distance of a station, a remote bus stop could be a convenience for many of them.

What about when the bus passes stops between stations that are close to the homes of passengers. It must be many a source of angst for drivers and passengers alike.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
Trains go past a lot of passenger's houses, and people cope OK with having to get off at a designated station some distance away. They just have to accept that the bus will do the same.

Two new trains to hit the track on Hunter line
Published31 Oct 2019
Hunter commuters will have more choice with two new direct trains from Singleton to Newcastle, seven days a week, starting from January next year.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole joined with Member for Upper Hunter Michael Johnsen and community advocates to announce the new services at Singleton station today.
“The Nationals in Government are committed to ensuring no matter where you live in NSW you have access to the services that keep our communities connected,” Mr Toole said.
“We are delivering on our election commitment and we have made sure the trains will hit the tracks from January 5.
“These new services will give customers more flexibility, greater choice and better connections when planning trips to health, education and leisure hubs in the likes of Newcastle, Maitland and Sydney.”
Mr Johnsen said the new services would operate under a 12-month trial and urged people to get on board and show their support.
“We’ve worked hard to make sure these services can become a reality as quickly as possible. Now it’s your turn to show your support for these services so you can enjoy them in the long term,” Mr Johnsen said.
“This is a great example of what can be achieved when community groups, track operators and state government work together for the people of Singleton.
“The timing of the new services will deliver a more even spread of trains across the day, which means you can choose to spend just a morning or afternoon at your destination.
“This means Singleton locals can head to Newcastle for a day at the beach and return home in the early afternoon, while tourists will have more opportunities to discover what Singleton has to offer with its rolling hills, wineries and heritage walks.”
The two extra services will give customers six return options during weekdays and four on the weekends, bridging the current interval in daytime options along the Hunter Line.

Assuming the existing bus stop at the station remains.boronia wrote:Bearing in mind that not all train passengers live within walking distance of a station, a remote bus stop could be a convenience for many of them.
ie for Killara, the all-stops bus continues to divert off the Pacific Hwy to the station entrance while the limited-stops bus now would stop on the highway at Killara (at the same bus stop as the Nightride).

Endeavour 2801/2851 was at platform 1 at Central yesterday forming a 11:35 service to Bathurst stopping at Lithgow only. May have been a charter, but usually these are displayed as such, while this was listed on the indicator board on the grand concourse, indicating it was available for public use. Any ideas?

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
Anyone know the rationale for building a crossover at Hurstville?
https://yoursay.transport.nsw.gov.au/mtms-hurstville
EDIT: I found the answer (from the REF on the project page linked above).

EDIT: I found the answer (from the REF on the project page linked above).
As part of the Program, Hurstville to Bondi Junction all station services will swap operation from the
Illawarra Local tracks to the Illawarra Main tracks to optimise the capacity of the T4 corridor. The
Hurstville crossover Proposal (the Proposal) would introduce a crossover on the City (i.e. eastern)
side of Hurstville Station to enable all station services operating on the Down Illawarra Main track
to terminate at Platform 4 and commence a service in the Up direction on the Up Illawarra Main
track.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
Probably a positioning movement, maybe to replace a failure or for some event. From the board, it could be "first set down Lithgow", wonder if it picked up along the way?. It doesn't show in yesterday's TripView, which is usually quite accurate.Linto63 wrote:Endeavour 2801/2851 was at platform 1 at Central yesterday forming a 11:35 service to Bathurst stopping at Lithgow only.
