Partly historical and partly a way to distinguish buses and coaches from general issue plates on other vehicles. The MO system has been operating from the early 1920'S.TV plates came later on as a way of distinguishing regular service and school buses(on Metropolitan m/o and country MO plates)from vehicles used on tourist vehicle services. It's a bit more blurred these days, with many tourist vehicles on general issue plates and some country school buses also on general issue plates.

In view of the current disinterest by RMS in uniformity, I wonder if they will simply do away with them altogether?

Given that TV 9649 has recently been issued to Telfords, we are looking at no more than 350 plates being made before TV 9999 is reached.

Is there any word yet on what will happen at that point.??

There stlll remain a lot of gaps between different series of TV plates issued at different registries. So it will still be while before a possible change.

TV-9003 is an Audi station wagon.

Maybe a 4WD version accredited for off-road adventures?

There have been reasonable numbers of “cars” on TV plates in recent months including Audi, Toyota, Lexus, Honda SUVs, even older Ford Fairlanes.

The rule used to be that TV plates required at least 9 seats, but at least 20 years ago exemption was granted to smaller vehicles accredited to operate specialist off-road activities.

Hire-car operators, who pay big money for their plates, were very vocal about small vehicles with TV plates (which cost nothing) impinging on their market. Of course a few HC operators have stretched limos (Hummers and the like) running TV plates in their fleets.

I had the idea point to point has ended that, with no new Hire Car-specific plates for about the last year or so? (and cars with those plates being booted from bus lanes in mid-2020).

I don't know how p2p affects Hire Cars, but they have re-issued HC plates over the last couple of years with 4 digit numbers and HIRE CAR branding. Their numbers have been capped (like taxis are) for many years, with only a few released each year. I think they have only been available on lease for some time, not put on the open market. I have seen a couple of private cars recently with HC-nn and HC-nnn plates

HC plates are no longer being issued since 18 December 2015 and no more new numbers have been issued. Please refer to the link for more information on HC reforms https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/sites/ ... rs-faq.pdf
From 18 December 2015 RMS will not be issuing new ‘HC’ plates. If you have existing plates and they are damaged or stolen you can apply for replacement plates.
Geographic boundaries for booked services have been removed meaning hire cars can provide booked services anywhere in NSW
This results in owners requesting Custom white on black plates such as HC00 or HC00A from my plates website.

Once they lose access to bus lanes in 2020 there'll be no difference anyway.

Pretty common for HC cars to be used as Uber Blacks

Not as far as I know. Booting the HC-plated hire cars just seems to be one of the ride-share consequences, as hire cars are now little more than ubers.
