I doubt a K set even probably an OSCAR train due to depot reasons. Otherwise a K set would need to go Hornsby or Flemington for maintenance as K sets depots are at Hornsby & Flemington. But maybe even a C set maybe sent down to the SCO to do Port Kembla locals.

A C set would be more ideal seeing as they are technically more similar to a T set.

When it is finished.

The first conversions in such programs are usually "trial and error" installations, so it is hard to predict a time frame.

All projects take time then have to be signed off by all parties ie:Engineering,OH&S,unions etc etc.

Stuffed if I know when T106 will return to service - why the particular interest in this set??

A number of other cars are out of service/withdrawn/long term spares from various classes and at a number of locations including an M Set D car at Eveleigh and the contract spare H Set car at Maintrain that has never been used.

Finally the 2 x S Set groups of power cars currently working with the AK Cars are S45 and S61.

I'm surprised it makes sense to have a set that's never been used. Is this done to avoid the cost of maintaining it? Does this mean that if it does need to be used, there will be quite a bit of work to bring it up to scratch maintenance wise?

Spare carriage, not whole set.

Spare carriage, not whole set.
Even a single car can deteriorate if not used occasionally, so it needs some maintenance.

Are there still spare driving D cars for the A sets? I recall that the prototype spares were sent back to China.

There is no spare A Set cars.Original A Sets 1 & 2 were scrapped as were structurally non-compliant.The four cars from A79 protype set languish at Cardiff - again with non-complaint issues and will never run.

The spare H Set car was a contract spare - it is in secure storage and can not be touched.

The M Set car is a different story - will have to check with some of former workmates who now work at the M Set Depot as what is it's future

Which means we have A3-A78 that can be used -- 608 carriages.

(What was the original number of sets/carriages + spares ordered?)

There was a replacement set A01 built plus A80 which makes up the 78 8-car sets in service.

EDIT: To bring this back to topic, all Tangara trains now have the new doors. As expected, reliability is heaps higher now :)

Putting back what they disconnected years ago.
The Tangara's were not even the first Sydney train to get door chimes from the factory - the C sets were delivered with them too.

UGL(y) noise. Why the need to change the familiar tune we all know and loathe?

That closing chime sounds like a sound heard at a certain fast food chain out in the kitchen

here's an idea - roll it out to every damn carriage in service?

^ lol. We've finished with the doors now, lets take another key Tangara feature thats been as it was for ages and toy around with it. That door open-chime is even more ugly to be honest

Jokes aside, I'm not sure if its an actual permanent thing or just an Easter Egg Tangara. Because I've also recently heard stories of one A set (forgot the number) has been playing its original doors closing announcement from EDI + anyways some A sets have higher pitched door beeps, and neither have ever been extended to the rest of the fleet.

Here is an image of a Tangara Technology upgrade in progress.

Changes I note:

push button rather than a handle for the inter-car doors
change of the saloon seating to fold up for wheelchair access
addition of handrail and help points (incomplete) above the saloon seating, similar to a Waratah
move of help points to the saloon side of the vestibule rather than the upper / lower deck side
red upholstered seating on one side of saloon signifying for aged / disability customers

Here is a good pic of a recently refurbished car for comparison:

The prototype of the TTU is due this month (October, 2017)
