Probably those stupid Baidu web-crawling spiders (they have a habit of quite intensively crawling sites, making blank header requests and flouting robots.txt files) in addition to all the other usual traffic round here.

I'd warrant a glitch of some kind. Surely the 'most users ever online' stat only counts registered users?
