Atlantean troubles
Hello everyone,
Recently purchased Atlantean 1966 EWS 812D ex Edinburgh. Have attached a photo for all you Atlantean lovers
She is a beautiful machine.
Went to Scotland drove it from Edinburgh to Southampton (800ks) without a hitch.
5 weeks on the boat to Port Kembla then drove her another 60ks to home (on a 30+c day) per old girl didn't know what hit her??
Anyhow she travelled beautiful the whole trip only to break down at the front gate!!
Have had trouble trying to start her. Changed fuel filters really sludged up, cleaned out primary filter (filthy with crap).
Cant seem to get the air out of the line.
Between the primary filter and feed pump you can see the air in the line (see through)
I know the fuel in the tank is reasonably low, its actually possible I ran out of/very low fuel which may have caused her to stop in the first place.
Put 20 litres in but this may be all that's in tank (fuel gauge doesn't appear to be working correctly)
Could this be the problem? Anyone had experience like this?
I might get another 20 litres in her tomorrow.
The fuel seems to be pumping up OK just cant get rid of the air.
Any suggestions please would be really appreciated.
Also has anybody with an Atlantean ever had trouble with filth in the fuel tanks?
Would it be advisable to remove them and clean after seeing all the gunk in the filters (looks like rust) and I did see a few water bubbles.?
Even with air in the line there appears to plenty of fuel pumping through.....would the engine be trying to fire? She just turns over and nothing..?
Thanks everyone.
in anticipation of some ideas of your experiences that may help..

Re: Atlantean troubles
Great shot Inspector.
Yes I spent a few days at Dumfernline when the bus was purchased getting to know the characters that keep that place running.
They are totally devoted to the buses. And a bunch of nice blokes.
They have some wonderful buses there.
Did you travel over to Beith to the museum there?
I also have another Atlantean coming over from here later in the year.
Shes an ex Glascow in original livery AN68 1982 model open topper URS321X.
Regards

Thanks Bedford,
You are right not originally Glascow.
Thanks for the photos.
Yes Inspector once I have them all contained in the same premises sometime this year you would be more than welcome to have a look.

Garry

Re: Atlantean troubles
Forgot to say Inspector that Beith museum closed down last year unfortunately.
That is how I came about the bus.
I am having it transferred from Beith to Dumfernline to stay with the boys there for a while.
I know shes in good hands at Dumfernline until I get over to bring her down to Southampton later in the year.

Re: Atlantean troubles
A friend of mine was a bus driver in Scotland and retired to Czech Republic, taking his small collection with him. I emailed him and he's sent the response below which I've quoted. Looks like he had the same problem once, in similar circumstances! I hope it's helpful.
It sounds like you're in my part of the world! If I cruise the back streets of Berry will I see your lovely machine somewhere?
If you want to talk to him, PM me and I'll see if I can get you in contact.I had problems with a Leopard on the German Autobahn. The Leopard has the same engine as the Atlantean, the O680, which is a super engine. The problem was with the fuel line drawing air somewhere. I managed to get to a village and the local garage was very helpful in getting stuff for me -- i.e. 10 metres of flexible braided plastic fuel pipe and a load of jubilee clips, and a coil of soft copper wire. I has tools with me I replaced the fuel pipe from the tank to the lift pump, then bled the system very carefully -- BINGO! -- end of problem. The job took about 3 hours, and another 3 hours to get cleaned up!
I suspect that the bottom of the fuel stand pipe may be corroded and drawing air. There may also be places further along the line that draw a little air. So my suggestion is (1) fill the tank at least half full, (2) replace the fuel line with flexible braided plastic pipe, and bleed very carefully. The Leyland O600 and O680 are both great engines, and start very easily.
My Atlantean (ex-Graham of Paisley) drove from Glasgow to Lovosice (CZ) and returned 12.6mpg overall. (Which is very good for a semi-automatic with an 11 litre engine).
Attached is a pic of my Atlantean, freshly repainted into Grahams livery. Grahams renumbered it from L10 to L4 and then to L1. I think renumbering the fleet was a family hobby!! Grahams Bus Service was a family company, well respected, and well loved by enthusiasts.
If our "colleague" is interested in another Atlantean, L10 is presently for sale. My Routemaster is already sold

Was going to ask where you were priming it from, and is it a rotary pump or inline pump?

Re: Atlantean troubles
Hi Guys,
Thankyou for your input.
The fuel tanks are to be replaced with s/s and the fuel lines from the tank to the engine replaced.
So we got her started OK, buzzer sorted etc.
Major problem now...
We have no gears even once the air has built up fully.
Here is the weird thing...
She will move forward when in neutral and accelerating..
No gears, but moves in neutral??
Has anyone ever experienced this before?
Thanks for any advice or hints...

Hi berrybusman would love to see pictures of your collection. Have thought many times about importing double decker buses myself. Had my eye on a couple but haven't got there yet. Is it much trouble to import what's involved?

Re: Atlantean troubles
Depends on what gearbox is in her. If you can email me some info, i may be able to help. We have had some and i have done a fair bit of work in the gearbox department. What changer is in it also, could be an issue with the selector. My email is michael@langleyscoaches.com.au
