BUSES IN THE BUSHES

Post by stuartdbell »

I've just returned to the UK after a short spell driving from Melbourne to Sydney via Merimbula, Cooma and Jindabyne. I've posted a page of 50 photographs of old stuff found lying around in fields and bushes.

http://stuartdbell4383.fotopic.net/c1820805.html

By the way, where have all the Dennings gone? Only bagged a handful this trip around Sydney.

Two of your pictures should say trains in the bush as it is one of the U-Boat class electric motor cars which use to run on the Central coast,Blue mountains and Illawarra lines it is a wonder SETS haven`t sourced the U-boat out but really good pictures of the buses there are Dennings out there you just got to be lucky to see one most Dennings nowadays are being retired and converted to motorhome`s or refurbished but there still coach company`s still use these reliable old coaches and the same with the Tourmasters.

You're right about the heading but it became a bit of a mouth full!

I love those old big long distance heavyweights. If I ever gather enough information and pics I'd love to do a picture book about them.

Great photos, Stuart. One question relating to the one in photo 46, though. Is that a trolley bus :?:. Also, what condition were those CX19s in :?:.

The bus in photo 2 & photo 46 is an AEC preselector underfloor (looks like 2775 ?), still with it's Eastern desto blinds in place.

The bus in photo 26 is an ex DGT/PTC Leyland Leopard.

AEC Decker would be interested in more details on the AEC Deckers in photos 9 & 10, 34 - 40.

The all green decker in pics 9/10 was found on a dirt road at Cooma. I took the wrong turn onto private land and had to drive a while to find a turnaround. You can't see the bus from the road only the cream/blue Bedford.

The other deckers, the three AEC's were taken near Junee on the Cootamandura road. My wife spotted them a couple of fields away on the left on the edge of town. I got permission to go onto private land to take the shots.

If you have time to trawl through my Fotopic site there is quite a bit of Australian stuff taken since 2004.

I've just added these today...

About 270 shots of various types of transport spotted between Melbourne and Sydney via the Snowy Mountains and Wagga Wagga.

Thanks for posting Stuart. :D
AEC Decker visited your website and as an ex truck driver found the Crash Bang Wollup photos of damaged trucks interesting. All we need to know now is, the How, Why & Where for those photos. The photos look like they may have been taken by an insurance assessor.
Most, if not all, of the trucks (and the Leyland National bus) shown in the photos were also sold in Australia.

Hi AEC Decker,

Most of the 'Crash bang Wallop' pics were acquired in an auto jumble sale in the Midlands by a friend who passed them on to me many years ago.

http://stuartdbell4383.fotopic.net/c1084175.html

They were taken by a garage proprietor who had a breakdown/insurance business on the A1 in the 1960's. The fact that there are some military vehicles amongst them and some of the registrations suggests the area he covered was Essex, Huntingdonshire, Bedfordshire. The colour shots were taken by me, I can give details of any you are interested in.

If you mean the single decker in photo numbers 0078971 & 0078973, it is an ex DGT AEC 31 seater.

That is not the Regent at Greta. Where is the Rover Regent? Unfortunately it is not one built new for them.

The AEC Regents in my various collections were taken as follows...

BUSH_BUSES_2010_34 to 40 Pics were taken on the northern outskirts of Junee.

BUSH_BUSES_2010_9 to 10 Pics were taken on a back road from Jindabyne to Berriedale.

BUSH_BUSES Pics 0078901 to 0078905 were taken somewhere near Singleton. Ex Red Rover?

All are AEC Regents.

The bus in pictures 27-33 would appear to be an ex-Ansett-Pioneer GMC Scenicruiser coach. Ansett-Pioneer acquired a batch of these vehicles (essentially an "off the shelf" US model adapted for right-hand drive) in c. 1965-67. As I recall, they had GM 6V53 diesel engines with Ansair C45F bodies. They were generally used by Ansett-Pioneer on tour work, rather than route work. I remember travelling around the mid-North Coast (Port Macquarie area, generally) on one during a family holiday c. 1969.

Looking at the "old tram" in picture 41, I would suspect that it is not a tramcar, but a railway vehicle. At first glance, when i saw the thumbnail, I thought that it might be an ex-Sydney "C" class car, or possibly an ex-Melbourne cable trailer. When I saw the enlargement, I thought "no - it's neither", if only because it appears to be in too good a condition. There is a possibility that it might be a replica. Where was it taken?

Finally, what was the location of the U-Boat motor in pictures 5-6?

Hi AEC Decker,
The strange twist in this is that, all these years later, I have purchased 2775 for preservation!
