Re: The death of Metrobus.

Or maybe as often happens, once the blue sky thinking phase is over, a dose of reality sets in and what ends up being delivered is something more practical.

Re: New bus network arising from CSELR (L2/L3) opening

And also, will they move from 8 mins to 7.5 mins frequencies to align with 15 minute frequencies that many buses run on for better interchange timing? Reality is that getting caught or clearing the traffic lights at Maroubra Junction can vary a journey time by 2 minutes, it's just not practical to ...

Re: Ferry Observations 2020

With the Emeralds presumably to have similar performance characteristics to the Incat built vessels used by both Sydney Ferries and Manly Fast Ferries, the speed advantage the latter has will disappear. While only 25% more expensive than the Sydney Ferries service, may well spell the end for MFF.

Re: Private Bus Observations 2020

Article goes on to say Qantas currently uses 23 buses on the service, which have an average age of about 20 years. I'm assuming most would be Coasters or Rosas currently in use. Any fleet details out there as to what Qantas is currently using ? Mainly Coaster sized vehicles along with some full-siz...

Re: The death of Metrobus.

And that's exactly the problem. From the 70s to the early 2000s, Sydney bus patronage bumped along its lowest point. The general unspoken official attitude since the 1950s was that if there wasn't enough capacity and people couldn't board, they could drive - and they did, on the ever-expanding road...

Re: Custom Element protoptypes due Nov / Dec 2020.

The other thing is that there's probably something in the regs in NSW nowadays that doesn't allow buses to have rear doors. As long as many decades ago, Hunters Hill Bus Co was required to fill in one doorway when it brought a number of three-door Adelaide Worldmasters into NSW. With Busabout , Bus...

Re: The death of Metrobus.

There is poor utilisation of the nearly 250 existing artics. We have them stored away when they're sorely needed because an obstinate TNSW won't approve them being sent out more. Transit Systems elect to keep theirs locked up on Sundays, not a Covid thing either, was happening pre March. Did TSA wa...

The vessels used in the late 90s were these fairly simpil5stic all enclosed catamarans named Rocket I - Rocket III.

Re: Ferry Observations 2020

Of course you are aware that if TfNSW didn't subsidise them, most off-peak bus services wouldn't be viable? Saw a route 265 service at Crows Nest during the week with 6 passengers on board, quite busy for a service that that supposedly hardly a soul uses.

Re: Jan 2021 bus changes - STA region 7

IIRC, Ryde and Willoughby depots are in region 7. Routes that are currently operated by depots from both regions 7 and 8 like the 144, will presumably only be operated by one after the 20 December changes.

Re: NSW Electric Bus Plan

I think they are only smaller buses but I was referring to these trialled in Sydney. They are being 35-40 seaters, but a meaningful like-for-like comparison indicating the electric to be 15-20% heaver than the equivalent diesel. While the electric gets away quite well, could notice the difference, ...

Re: Ferry Observations 2020

We have a natural roadway and they choose to use a road system that has to traverse this roadway instead. Great going Sydney. It is a premium service, Greenwich is already served by Sydney Ferries Cockatoo Island services while the other suburbs have direct city services, so no need for the governm...

IIRC, that was the original plan but Lane Cove Council wouldn't move a pedestrian refuge hence it terminates in the middle of an industrial area.

Re: Jan 2021 bus changes - STA region 7

Will the 115 and 343 be M runs or will the 343 go to one of the south/east depots and 115 to another northern depot? That can be taken as read, currently operated by both M and P. More for ease of splitting the regions with privatisation. Which was my point, we're going back to the old days where r...

Re: NSW Electric Bus Plan

The thing that worried me was they weighed nearly 15t which only allowed 1t for passengers or they would be overloaded. In the UK where buses carry their gross vehicle mass as part of their legal signwriting an AlexanderDennis Enviro200 body fitted to a BYD chassis weighs about 10.2 tonnes, the sam...

Re: Jan 2021 bus changes - STA region 7

So it seems bit by bit all the cross-city services are being split, more for operational convenience than anything else with the 340 and 343 both to be curtailed and replaced by routes 115 and 120 north of the cbd.

Re: NSW Electric Bus Plan

After having used locally-built electric buses in Europe extensively, I find the BYD to have incredibly high internal noise, probably worse than a diesel. Having travelled on them a fair bit, both here and overseas, you must be a hard person to please if you find them noisy. I think TSA is rushing ...

Wonder if Constance bothered to run this by any of the relevant departments or if he just thinking aloud? He can challenge TfNSW to do it, but has he run the idea by the Treasury? Assuming there are 8,000 buses with a service of life of 25 years, 320 need to be purchased a year. With 50 to be purcha...

I've used London buses, as well as buses in Europe, USA and Australia for daily commuting so I know them intimately. Ah, good ole unions. Let's have a snap strike. According to Fair Work employers are required to give three days notice , before industrial action commences. Seeing that there was no notice given, were TfNSW advised but elect not to advise the public, or did the RBTU break the rules. Either way, som...

Re: Freshwater Class in Doubt.

Heard on the radio that Andrew Constance wants to decommission the Freshwater class and replace them with smaller new ferries to save six million bucks. He claims they have reached the end of their life (like he'd know) and services will be able to increase with the smaller ferries. They are 35 - 4...
