Re: ex-State Transit Vehicle Transmissions

They have proven to have reduced their fuel consumption by a small amount which adds up over time x number of buses. I bet Busways wishes they went the Voith route before, although I have observed drivers negating their benefits by holding the accelerator beyond the kickdown detent revving them out ...

Re: ex-State Transit Vehicle Transmissions

Sometimes you need to spend money to save money!
Fuel is by far the biggest expense to running a motor vehicle.

Re: ex-State Transit Vehicle Transmissions

That didn't stop B12BLEs being used. A Dana Spicer would have shaved off thousands from the purchase price and given a super smooth predictable ride, with a robust transmission with little to go wrong. The unicorn would be a CVT for buses which Leyland were developing in the early 80s. Someone shoul...

Re: Royle Bros. Austerity's.

Shows how tight the privates could be that they'd run used austerity buses that were designed as a temporary measure to keep services running during war time, but these companies chose to continue their use when real buses could be had.

Re: ex-State Transit Vehicle Transmissions

With the torque today's engines make, a one speed would be fine. Just add a two speed auxilliary gearbox off limits to drivers for any open road driving required.

Re: ex-State Transit Vehicle Transmissions

Both Brisbane and Perth have each taken delivery of a handful of Voith B8s as well, although the one or two I've travelled on didn't seem to be programmed appropriately and seemed to hunt gears a bit, which wasn't what I was expecting. They're a brilliant gearbox for city work when properly matched...

I thought this YouTube short was the Rozelle Interchange for a few seconds. Was it based off this roadway in America?

The bus museum preserved one. A bus designed not to last. You would think photos would suffice.

I thought we were done with square =modern by the 1990s. Have to give credit where it's due with the CDi. It really looks 21st century.

Re: Bus Observations 2024.

Still on CB60s, saw a a Busways Scania K230UB driving the other way in Bensville sporting it's new TNSW livery looking nice with the headlight panels painted dark blue. I thought it was a B12BLE as it reminded me of them but it had the EvoII rear when I checked. Great to see. A big improvement on th...

Re: Bus Observations 2024.

I wonder if any will be game to take them on in the preservation scene now that retirement is looming? Not 100% sure if it is in preservation yet but NKV tours already has a few of the ex Newcastle B12's (and former m/o 1407 that was dereg for parts) Sydney Bus Museum has government bus day upcomin...

Re: Bus Observations 2024.

It helps when you have one bus that can get this attention. Multiple units scattered around these contractors that need them out doing duty and have others to repair with higher priority repairs, means it will take time to get so many sorted out should they undertake to get them done at all. I wonde...

Re: Bus Observations 2024.

The engine itself is quiet, it's the thermo fan that roars away or some other defective ancillary emitting strange noises. Not sure if the car alarm triggering exhaust brakes were cut back or disconnected altogether. I haven't noticed the loud exhaust brakes going off for years, but then again I'm r...

Re: Bus Observations 2024.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T71cVhxG_v4 But hopefully more advanced fire suppression systems will be all that is required to increase the amount of time passengers have to escape. More emergency exits might also be handy - on many buses, the emergency exits are concentrated around the front. By...

Re: Bus Observations 2024

Was a stand alone lithium battery that caught fire at Custom Denning's St Marys factory. Contrary to the ill-informed observation' that the exclusion zone was established as a cover up, it was done so because of the intense heat generated that required 20 tonnes of sand to extinguish and at one sta...

Sounds about right. They'll probably try to cover it up.
Can't ruin the narrative.

Re: Bus Observations 2024.

A lot of passengers and other motorists are complete inconsiderate oafs, but that fits many bus drivers also. One at Umina shops recently layed up in the bus zone at least three metres short of the bus stop sign, necessitating our bus to have it's arse in the roadway. What was he thinking? More to t...

What a shame. Your typical Australian owner. Those things were futuristic in their day and regarded as one of the best looking large executive cars in the world. One was sent to Germany for evaluation to compare to an Audi and Mercedes and the German crew thought the Falcon looked better than the ot...

Re: Bus Observations 2024

Keolis Downer operates route 1A, and yes they used yellow MAN B-Line deckers on it this year. I suppose they used blue and white 12m rigids on the B-line while doing this? Those deckers are supposed to be dedicated to B-line duty separate from the other buses. The goverment didn't spend ½ billion o...

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown

The bus only lane on the M2 parking lot is a real asset that probably isn't appreciated and it's far more direct on the map than the Metro. The Bus Lane is only of use outbound in the PM, when the traffic builds back from Pennant Hills Road.. In the AM the traffic build up is from the M7 through to...
