Re: Return of trolleybuses to Hobart and Lauceston

Point of fact: Some trams also have this technology and also do not need overhead wires through the network of tracks on which they operate.

I know, I said that and trolley buses that operate without an OH are now called BEV buses.

For buses, RHD or LHD, is there really that big a difference in ...

Re: Electric Buses

The EU is expanding BEV buses quite rapidly. I'm not sure which is winning but recent trips I see more BEV locations than Trolley which is quite rare.

You'd have to be wearing blinkers to observe that. In the automotive manufacturing countries, Germany, France and UK, the trolleybus was ...

Re: Electric Buses

The WOL costs of trolley systems are lower than battery bus systems. Politically "not wanting to take the trouble" of critically examining options is a major reason for choosing battery buses. The only cultural issue is that some cultures are more open-minded and cost-conscious than others!

Re: Return of trolleybuses to Hobart and Lauceston

All this has given trolleybuses what you describe as a new lease of life, but only on mainland Europe, not elsewhere. Might it be that whole-of-life costs of trolleybuses are lower on mainland Europe but not elsewhere?

Only mainland Europe still has enough surviving trolleybuses power networks ...

Yep, if I was to build a green field non fuel bus network in Australia, I wouldn't be stringing up OH wires. Simply use BEV buses, mini, std rigid and banana and double banana, install charging infrastructure at all the key terminii and locations of extended waiting periods.
Would a greenfield ...

A few comments

- R set replacement shouldn't affect as conversion to Tram Train would be many years away, it could easily be timed for retirement of the remainder of the XPL's. The bigger question would be what to do with the existing LR vehicles? Extend the LR to a new line?

- Longer distance ...

WSA stations are I assume mostly complete or at least committed, M1 done and dusted.

So this leaves trying to save significant amouts of cash from the fit out of just 9 stations on MW, part of which you can assume has been partly committed to.

The more suitable vehicles don't really cost very much more. A quicker trip should in principle mean less trams. It depends of the operator's skill and competence. Examples of a similar 8.5 km trip to that of L2 and L3, with a similar number of stops, that I've seen in European cities takes less ...
