There was an "incident" at Stanmore on Saturday 10 Feb 2024 which was officially described as a medical emergency and unofficially as a fatality. See https://www.smh.com.au/politics/nsw/what-the-hell-is-happening-passengers-stranded-as-chaos-engulfs-train-network-20240210-p5f3xj.html I und...

Re: Rail Observations 2024

I was at Chatswood station today on platforms 3 and 4. A man in Metro uniform approached and asked was I looking to ride on the N.W. metro because it wasn't running this weekend. I asked why. He said it wasn't because of trackwork; it was because of testing for the forthcoming service to Sydenham. I...

Re: Bus Observations 2023

A lot of the rail-substitute buses up the North Shore today seemed to be single-door. Some were coaches, with narrow aisles all along the vehicle so that anyone with luggage couldn't even sit in the front rows. Not that that mattered when so many of the vehicles were full. Do the people planning tra...

Re: Rail Observations 2023

The pic in SMH seems to show the existing (2023) single track still in use. There is plenty of room for peds on the unused half of the formation, including the tunnel, but separated from the track by a fence. However, the bridge over Woolcott St is now too narrow to carry a path beside the track.

Re: Inner West Light Rail observations

The George St line has a capacity of a tram every 2 minutes (doesn't matter whether single or double set), so there would be no theoretical issue with inserting L1 services without having to reduce L2 and L3 services. That's the theory anyway. Whether single or double DOES matter. Look at https://w...

What's the knocking sound which is audible in the cab most of the way along High St?
It starts at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sL0_TMl3960&t=110s and ends at the UNSW stop.
It sounds like a wheel flat, like those made famous by Tangara emergency brake applications.

It isn't the F3 any more. It was changed to M1 years ago - the 1980s, I think.

Re: Ferry Observations for 2021

Using the Emerald ferries on the Manly run isn't as simple as it sounds. I understand that the newer Emeralds, which are intended for that route, can't cope with heavy swells or even moderate swells. Their clearance above the water between the hulls is only about one metre so there will be water pou...

Re: CBD & South East Light Rail

No-one knows what the long-term effect of COVID will be. However, assuming everything recovers, the CSELR system doesn't have any unused capacity that might allow changes which would result in more passengers using it. The problem is in George St where the combined load of L2 and L3 trams is hard up...
