Re: Old Sydney Tram Remnants

there was definitely a plan to retain toastracks - all the Ps, a quantity of multiple unit Os and O/Ps . This sort of played out but the idea of a compact tram system being retained didn't. I'd like to know more about Fergus Maclean's in put to design. Was he involved in the design of the Rs in the ...

Re: Old Sydney Tram Remnants

Yes I wonder about the steel shortage too - probably a question for Ross Willson. During McKell's time trams were accepted as part of the mix and he envisaged a multi modal transport system. After McGirr took over in 1947, things seemed to change and I wonder that Cahill wasn't at work behind the sc...

Re: Old Sydney Tram Remnants

But Comeng clearly was interested in the pushing the bus barrow. The prototype underfloor is a good example of that -out to impress the DRTT with style over function. There's no question in my mind that hundreds and hundreds of dreadful old toastracks still running in the early 1950s failed to set a...

Re: Old Sydney Tram Remnants

But seriously, where were Brisbane and Sydney going to buy new trams in those days -even in the late 1960s ? The British had stopped development, Americans had priced themselves out of the market with super expensive PCCs and the the thought of buying an advanced German designed tram was simply out ...

Re: State Transit/UTA last green and cream livery overhaul?

Quaint Departmental notions.- didn't stop 1066 1115 1146 from meeting their doom Yes, I think the Mk I dissatisfaction arose in Newcastle - had a large fleet so stands to reason plus 50 clapped out old OPSU1s. No Mk IIs new to Newcastle as far as I can remember - first were sent north to enable earl...

Re: State Transit/UTA last green and cream livery overhaul?

certainly the brown touches in the vestibule and driver's cabs of Atlanteans were intended to remind drivers that they were driving a dd. Blue and white was an image thing to show that the Askin Govt was actually doing something about the bus fleet - lots of old green and cream bombs even received i...

Re: State Transit/UTA last green and cream livery overhaul?

The PTC came into being in October 1972 but the first blue and ivory bus to enter service was Mk II Leopard 3754 in December 1969 under DGT auspices.Gradually older fleet members received blue and white repaints but buses continued to receive green and cream overhauls well into 1972. I remember one ...

Re: STA Observations - September 2016

Yes I'm bemused by the 505 as well Tonyp - STA could save a few buses by pushing people onto ferries. 505 should be Ryde- West Meadowbank operated by 31 seaters

I suggested 'Koompartoo' local Aboriginal word for 'a fresh start' I really want to see that amazing name again on a ferry even though it would likely baffle most people.

There was also a Peter Johnstone (dec'd) and I'm not sure whether Hal Woodward was there from the start.Hal was certainly an office bearer by the late 1960s C 1968.

Re: Rozelle Tram Depot - Development Proposal

2044 is an office .I think it would be quite saveable but has severe rust problems in the underframe or something. I think 2001 has notionally pushed 2044 off the restoration agenda for now.The absolute best R1 in existence outside of a Museum, is 1975 in a backyard at Bowral. If only it was 2075 !

Re: Rozelle Tram Depot - Development Proposal

Tony most went to scrap but a few went to steel factories as workshop trolleys. A couple went to the radio telescope at Parkes. I've heard stories of bogies stacked in A G Sims' yard at St Leonards also. Once Stan Berry became Commissioner freebies were a thing of the past.Berry also refused to hand...
