F6 Motorway - on exhibition

The Department of Planning and Environment has placed on exhibition "F6 Extension Stage 1 - New M5 Motorway at Arncliffe to President Avenue at Kogarah".
Submissions close Friday 14 December 2018.

The project will be the first stage in completing the missing link from southern Sydney to the Sydney motorway network.

Ah, another 'missing link'.

The great catch-all justification used by every motorway proponent!

I'm waiting for the glossy brochure one day that opens with the statement:

"This motorway will complete Sydney's last missing link".

‘Missing link’ :lol: If they were truly going to fix missing link it actually needs to go all the way to Waterfall. Using government logic what about the missing link to the Eastern Suburbs.

Loftus is far enough, the bit between there and Waterfall was done decades ago. It's only a lot of noise by whinging motorists who want to chuck hundreds of people out of their homes and schools so that they can save a couple of minutes journey time.

Rebuild the rail first.

The "savings" that are talked up for these massive projects are a joke. We all know that induced demand will fill the new bit of motorway up straight away and it will just become another holding carpark for the queue into the ordinary street system wherever it ends.

I see that too on the south coast where Gareth Ward's re-election strategy motorway extensions pile up when they reach towns. For decades the professional road-planning strategy was to build town bypasses first because that's where the congestion was and fill in the in-betweens later, but now it's more politically glamorous to build the long-spectacular-looking in-between sections first and ignore the massive congestion in the towns. The political catchcry is "a divided road from Waterfall [Loftus actually] to Jervis Bay Rd", ignoring the fact that you will be sitting in gridlock in Nowra and Albion Park Rail.

There are also optimistic journey-time expectations and the voters are beguiled into thinking there'll be half an hour cut off the trip to Sydney etc. Our car's satnav hasn't yet been updated and I'm in a position to see the time savings on the new sections of motorway because the lady with the plummy voice doesn't know about the new road and thinks I'm in the middle of a paddock and have to turn around and get back on the road forthwith. So our journey through beautiful Broughton is regaled by the sounds of "do a U turn at the next available opportunity". Anyway, the outcome of those hundreds of million dollars thrown at the hills and vales of Foxground is a 2 minute time saving. Woopee. Since the Berry bypass opening, the saving between Nowra and Gerringing is 5 minutes. As somebody once asked, "what are you going to do with that extra 5 minutes?"

Everyone knows what a folly the private automobile is, yet the constituents are constantly fed this chestnut that a another new proposed road will miraculously brighten their everyday existence and what a fantastic thing to look forward to.
