Transdev WA Industrial Action

The West Australian Newspaper wrote:Bus disruptions on the cards across Perth after drivers threaten action over pay dispute, EBA breakdown

Bus services across Perth are facing disruptions after drivers voted to take industrial action from next week.

Fare-free days and work stoppages are reportedly on the cards, with action to start with the scrapping of driver uniforms from Monday afternoon.

About 270 employees at Perth bus firm Transdev WA reportedly voted to take action over a pay dispute and a breakdown in EBA negotiations.

Operating under contract with the State Government, the company provides CAT bus services in Perth, Fremantle and Joondalup.

It also supplies drivers to run other general Transperth bus services in the Fremantle, Rockingham, Mandurah, Joondalup and Wangara regions.

It is believed to employ about 1000 of 2500 metropolitan bus drivers.

Transport Workers Union WA branch secretary Tim Dawson said drivers ditching uniforms from Monday was a “low key” way to make the public aware of their fight.

Mr Dawson said drivers were battling for an annual 3 per cent bonus on top of any rise in the wage price index to help them “catch up” on CPI and cost of living.

He said the aim was not to disrupt passengers but that action could increase later in the week to include free fares and work stoppages.

“If Transdev want to ramp up action, we will stop work,” he said.

A spokeswoman for the Public Transport Authority said talks would continue and there was a chance the proposed action could still be circumvented.

“Negotiations between Transdev and the union are still underway and we are hopeful of an outcome that avoids industrial action,” she said.

“The provision of bus services for Transperth has been under a contract model which has been in place for more than 20 years. Under these arrangements all costs, including wages, are indexed.”

A Transdev spokesman said the company was disappointed it had come to industrial action.

“The TWU’s decision to take industrial action hurts our customers, especially those on routes where there are limited or no other public transport options,” he said.

“TWU members make up about one third or our employees, and we want to finalise a new enterprise agreement that will benefit all of our drivers as soon as possible.

“We have invited the TWU to return to the negotiating table, and urged the union to reconsider the decision to stop work so we can avoid the impact on customers and the broader the community.”

EBAs have been coming up for renewal with bus owners in various states. This is just the latest example.

Uber and other ride sharing services would be making a killing off of this especially for those that don’t have their own private car

The action now continues, from today until Friday, Transdev drivers on strike are offering fare-free rides:

IF you’re looking to travel on the cheap then public transport could be the way to go.

Transdev bus drivers are set to offer fare-free rides on the Transperth services it is contracted to operate from Wednesday until Friday, with the fight over EBA negotiations kicking up a level.

As part of the industrial action, drivers won’t accept cash fares or enforce tagging on.

Operating under contract with the State Government, Transdev supplies drivers to run general Transperth bus services in the Fremantle, Rockingham, Mandurah and Joondalup regions.

Drivers walked off the job earlier this month, deciding to act after their calls for an annual three per cent pay rise, a one per cent boost to superannuation, an extra week of annual leave and secure job pathways went unanswered.

Transport Workers Union WA branch secretary Tim Dawson said their latest move was about ensuring Transdev drivers were on an equal footing with other contractors operating Transperth bus services.

“Our message to the public who catch a Transdev bus is to make the most of fare free days; Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,” he said.

“Fare-free days mean our drivers will not take cash fares and will not enforce tagging on when people catch the bus.

“This fight will continue until Transdev and the Public Transport Authority are reasonable and give our drivers a fair go.”

Transdev managing director Ben Smith said said only about a quarter of its 1000 drivers had taken part in industrial action so far and warned not all will be offering fare-free journeys over the coming three days.

“It’s disappointing the TWU is continuing to put its energy into industrial action rather than on finalising a new enterprise agreement for our drivers,” he said. “We are calling on the TWU to commit to further talks at the Fair Work Commission to resolve the outstanding issues as quickly as possible and with as little impact and cost to the community.”

The TWU said fare-free days would likely continue next week between Wednesday and Friday.

In a newsletter to Transperth passengers the PTA said most would be expected to pay a fare when travelling.

“The majority of bus services as well as train services are unaffected so passengers should purchase a cash ticket or tag on as normal on these services,” the authority said.

“Primary and secondary students are reminded that access to the 70 cent student fare is only available by tagging on to the SmartRider system.

“If paying cash, students must purchase the appropriate zonal concession ticket, as well as provide their SmartRider card as proof of concession.”

The following routes may be affected:

Routes 352, 354, 365, 370, 372, 384, 385, 386, 389, 390, 391, 450, 460, 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466, 467, 468, 469, 470, 471, 473, 474, 480, 481, 482, 483, 484, 490, 491 and 970.

I've noticed the vast majority of Perth CAT drivers have been wearing their street clothes instead of uniform over the last couple of weeks and have seen 99% of Palmyra drivers coming to and from EQBS in normal uniform. Has the media been correct with its reports that Transdev drivers are not getting the same pay and conditions as their counterparts at Swan and Path ?

Just noted that the northern services affected were operated by Path. Was that the drivers were re-employed in Transdev after the contract transfer back in 2011-2012?

Latest Update - Thursday 6 December at 3.30pm
On Friday 7 and Monday 10 December between 4.00pm and 8.00pm, the below services will be disrupted due to a work stoppage being undertaken by a number of bus drivers who work for our contractor Transdev.
Due to the nature of the action being undertaken, we cannot confirm which trips will run and which may be cancelled.
However, it is important to note the protected industrial action only relates to a limited number of bus drivers operating out of the Rockingham, Mandurah, Fremantle and Joondalup areas as well as the Perth CAT.
Services operated by Path Transit and Swan Transit remain unaffected as are school services and those suburban bus services that deviate to schools.
The following routes may be affected:

Northern Suburbs
Routes 352, 354, 365, 370, 372, 384, 385, 386, 389, 390, 391, 450, 460, 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466, 467, 468, 469, 470, 471, 473, 474, 480, 481, 482, 483, 484, 490, 491 and 970

Southern Suburbs
Routes 111, 114, 115, 148, 150, 158, 160, 500, 501, 502, 503, 504, 505, 510, 511, 512, 513, 514, 520, 522, 525, 526, 530, 531, 532, 534, 535, 536, 540, 541, 542, 543, 548, 549, 550, 551, 552, 553, 554, 555, 556, 557, 558, 559, 560, 561, 562, 563, 564, 565, 566, 567, 568, 584, 586, 587, 588, 589, 591, 592, 593, 594, 597, 598, 600, 604, 605 and 910

Perth CAT
Blue and Green CATs are not expected to run during this time. Yellow and Red CATs will operate, with minimal disruption.

In addition to the above action, from Monday 10 until Sunday 16 December, the collection of cash fares will be also disrupted on some of the above routes.
As this action will only occur on some buses operated by Transdev, passengers are expected to pay a fare where possible when travelling. The majority of bus services, as well as train services are unaffected so passengers should purchase a cash ticket or tag on as normal on these services.
Primary/secondary students are reminded that access to the 70 cent Student Fare is only available by tagging on to the SmartRider system. If paying cash, students must purchase the appropriate zonal concession ticket, as well as provide their SmartRider card as proof of concession.
