Light rail gets the green light: stage 1 UNSW to CBD

Traffic lights. Ped crossing at Todman Ave end, and where I took the picture (which will probably be moved a bit further north). There are plenty of gaps in the traffic flow in both directions, so is quite safe to cross without lights.

Could a locomotive travel on these lines? They are the same width. I keep wondering about that when I drive along them.

I thought that might come into it, as the rails have a built in ditch, as I noticed at a worksite outside PoW hospital.

It's called grooved rail, which is standard tramway rail designed to be used where the tramway is in a road or pedestrian surface. If there are both types of rail (and points and crossings) used, the tram wheel flanges must be shaped so that they can run properly on both types, which TfNSW has apparently neglected to ensure.

It was very interesting seeing them piled at the worksite with a view of their cross section. I just never pondered it before. Motorbikes must love them!

Walked through Chalmers St for the first time in a while and a lot of progress.

Almost all of the track is either laid or has the concrete channels done

Also noted piece on 7News about construction restarting in some CBD areas, and a looming class action by a bunch of businesses (including Souths Juniors)

I was just reading an article in the Daily Doom and Gloom and privately the government apparently believes "work has stepped up at key sites because of media attention that has been drawn to Acciona's slow tactics on the work site".
It should be called go slower as progress already looked glacial before this debacle.

The Telegraph reports 490 metres of track in the last fortnight.

But I think most of the actual track is down now, it is the work on the platforms, and in the other lanes and footpaths, which is held up now.

The curve from High St into Wansey Rd was competed recently and the rails on High St between Wansey Rd & Botany St are just about ready for the pour of cement.

So there'll be more seats available for actual hospital visitors in the foyer of the Childrens Hospital at Randwick in future then.

If they are as bad as the Telegraph is reporting, then why did the Libs award them the contract? :?

Taking on the government publicly never ends well.
Wonder whether the Spanish took advice on this tactic.

The consortium they're a part of was literally the only bidder for the contract; that's how much risk TfNSW pushed onto the contractor.

There's a lot of Devonshire St which is being done now between Crown St and Elizabeth St because this part was all very much held up by the wholesale service relocation requirements, and therefore all became ready for trackwork at the same time.

Compare with the remaining bits of George St and High St which are difficult little infill bits.

They're also now doing the former Olivia Gardens site between Bourke St and South Dowling St.

Completion of the Anzac Pde crossing of Alison Rd was postponed last weekend due to weather. But they're getting close to pouring the northern side approach.

DT reporting today that the Royal Randwick stop name has been approved.

Also work has started on the new footbridge at the Moore Park stop. The public bus stop at Sydney Girls HS (citybound) has been removed, with (as usual) no signage as to where to catch the bus. I saw today that they were stopping on the next stand down which is normally school services only.

Good to see the watermelons get thwarted. What did they have against the name chosen?

^It appears to be the opposition to Royal Randwick name was it was too commercialised. Even though there are other stops named in a similar manner i.e. The Star.

Centennial Park how boring and inaccurate. Why not call it Randwick Tafe instead. Man!

The Geographical Names Board has issued its final approval of all stop names:

http://sydneylightrail.transport.nsw.go ... s-unveiled

If numbers of people are found wandering around the racecourse carrying shopping bags, they will be people looking for the Royal Randwick shopping centre - and if numbers of people are wandering around the shopping centre carrying form guides, they will be looking for the racecourse because, to my recollection, nobody has ever called the racecourse "Royal Randwick".

Meanwhile the people who will be using the stop every day, the local residents and attendees of the King St TAFE and UNSW campuses will be trudging great distances in the rain and heat, compared to the present convenient bus stops.
