Sydney memories: another visit to W

Post by boronia »

Sometime towards the end of 1960, these shots were mainly to record destiantion signs and the paper supplementaries on issue at the time.

Boronia, did you get a shot of bus showing "Rushcutters Bay Depot'? 1959 Randwick rolls had it on them for proposed workings that are still unknown. I have one in my collection retrieved from Randwick AEC 1676.

Yes Leopard 1543 will need the extra strength pills when he sees 2210 - it was quite an early withdrawal.

The paper sign reads
STADIUM - ORDINARY FARES - VIA WILLIAM ST

I think the route no 24 displayed was used for these services

Rush Bay Depot was used to park buses in the old TB section at one stage, and I think the sign was used for buses terminating there. I remember seeing buses there displaying this sign, may even have a photo somewhere.

That picture of 3265 should be put in the Vatican picture collection it is so priceless - route 24 Rushcutters Bay Depot and Stadium supplementary sign. I am stunned.

It is a "posed" photo, but I am 99% sure it would have been based on an actual service at the time.

At the time I had unfettered access to the store room where all these signs were kept, and I made up a number of buses to suit the signs.

Umm, did you manage to collect any of those old supplementaries? This could be posed again one day with the Bus Museum's 3197 and my desto.

At one stage I had a complete set, scrounged from every depot in Sydney.

But somewhere along the line in many moves of residence, they have sadly been lost.

I'm ok now. This collection of Waverley in 1960 is an absolute credit to "boronia" :!:

I've just had a look at your Waverley collection (via the link) and like Dave Wilson said I am also stunned :!:
Only the other day Dave said to me that there are not many photographs of AEC Regal IV's around but seeing your collection has filled some of the gaps.
These photos are just so important and I'm so pleased that you took them and thanks so much for posting them.
My favourite batch of Regal IV's were the 3257-3266 series and in the single destos 2992-3001.
Back in 1969 my school (Rose Bay Public) went on an excursion to Watsons Bay (in AEC Regal 3266) and I had a photo of myself taken in front of it as a 10 year old but unfortunately I can not locate it. :x
Graham Olsen (the Waverley shed driver) told me that 3264, 3265 & 3266 were used on charters at Waverley regularly and became know as their charter buses. Graham Olsen was my best friend at Waverley and on a sad note actually passed away on this day 16 years ago. He would of loved to have seen these photos. Hopefully he is looking down from up above.
As for the deckers, yes 2210 was an early withdrawal (29/12/69 to be exact when the bus caught fire in Oxford Street). Not much damage though and it was sold to Caringbah Bus Service for further use as a bus. I've only ever seen one other photo of 2210 in actual Government service but this is the one and only I have ever seen of it with a canvas door.
Well done "boronia", you are a legend
:!: :D

Would that be a young boronia seen on the buses in some of those photos ?

I thought I remember travelling on AEC preselector underfloors in the East, after seeing your photo of 2757 at the York Rd entrance, that confirms it. When I was young, I used to think ALL AEC deckers (pre war and post war) were preselectors and that the DGT were taking the gearboxes out of the old deckers and putting them in the underfloors.

Waverley had quite a few preselect UFs when it first opened, I'd say possibly at least 20.

Boronia, do you know what actually terminated at R B Depot? I was just thinking how odd it was that after the trams ceased serving the Stadium, replacement buses did not have this name included on the destos. In fact having Rushcutters Bay Depot on the destos for just a few terminating trips and no Stadium sign at all, is bizarre.

After Rushcutters Bay Tram Depot closed in July 1960, did the building remain "unused" for a while?

I recall that later it perhaps became a ten pin Bowling Alley?

No idea now. I can only recollect seeing buses in there, not sure if it was pre- or post the tram closure, more likely before. I did have the same thoughts back then about the desto signs.

Yes, I played many ten pin bowling games at Ruchcutters Bay. :D
There was car parking underneath. Don't remember seeing any remnants of tramway use, otherwise I would have acquired them for preservation.

Yes, I went there bowling many a time and then also a Hotel complex was built at the rear.
I remember staying there in February, 1975 when my Aunt & Uncle from the States came over for a visit.

Wow RB depot, that is old. It's a shame that the government bus management over time have been hell bent on closing depots. I mean look at the inner west now, had they of kept Enfield Burwood would be fine. The closure of Tempe is another one. Imagine how much money they would have saved if we added up all the dead running for 422/425 and 303 trips from K and P respectively.

What a great collection of photos. I've never seen a bus with a tram style desto box before. Did any others have them or was this just a one off?
Any western suburb photos to come?

Yes. AEC Regal IV's 2775, 3238, 3262, 3265 & 3266 were fitted with these tramway style desto boxes.

2775's was a much smaller unit that sat in the brackets for the metal sign under the left hand windscreen. There is a photo in Greg Travers City to Suburbs book.

I recently found a 1952 Safe Working Instructions book, which lists all DGT bus routes, including
