THe exhaust extension has nothing to do with it, m/o 430 is a non turbo unit like the forest/shorelink and busways non turbo units which is why its louder and has a helluva lot more character.

I'd love to know what they did to it because when I used to driver her at bankstown she was far from slow, she had your typical non turbo get up and go off the mark, and flew right through to 100, and sounded great every second she was running.

THe gearbox was very responsive, kickdown always worked, but as with a lot of the non turbos gearboxes they will crash through two gears at once when not on the kickdown. I think maybe it was also transit firsts maintenance.

crazy_dan wrote:I dunno I find all the ex B O405s to sound a little odd, even the newer Bustech ones... Not sure what it is. I'd say the exhaust has a little to do with it on 147, 145 sounds a bit nicer and is a similar unit. It has a clearer note/tone, hard to explain I guess. I really like the newest of the O405s including 154, 155 etc... Great buses, air-cond and generally pretty neat and tidy internally.

Just to follow up on what Stoney has said, m/o 7131 at Forest which was muffled back in mid-2005 (when it had its stainless steel fluting removed) now has it's exhaust note back. Nothing wrong with a "loud booming" that comes from the exhaust. I also saw someone taking note of how loud the engines are in the B12s, or of the cooling fans going... it adds CHARACTER!!!!! That's one thing that makes bus enthusiasts enthused with buses.

B12s at idle are very loud - espcially pre dawn in a depot when a couple are warming up, it is really surprising how loud they are. Merc O500s are quite loud as well compared to older buses I think.

In Veolia's 147 (if you read what I said properly) its the way the exhaust extension has been mangled, only leaving a very small opening, giving the bus an odd sound. I dont mind the non-turbo O405's, gives a nice change from the rest of the O405's at Taren Point.

WTF do you mean by an "exhaust extension"? As in the exhaust pipe?
Windy

Postby Daniel » Thu Nov 01, 2007 8:49 am

Yes. The curved pipe protruding from the top bodywork. Some have it and other dont (example being the 120 series O405s at Veolia.)

It really means nothing. With CC, operators could spec a bus with the exhaust tip as an option. Westbus' O.405s don't have the exhaust tips either. A fair few of their O.405s have nice exhaust notes as well. A number of Shorelink's units have had the tips removed, and they are still fairly loud (when I was in Turramurra, I sometimes mistook an O.405 for a MAN 16.240  )

I recently saw large ad's plastered on some Veolia buses, promoting "Clean Fleet". It appears from some searching, that it is;
"Clean Fleet is a voluntary audited maintenance program, designed to improve air quality by reducing vehicle emissions."
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/heavyvehicles/cleanfleet/index.html

Are any other operators involved in this program?

A couple of years back, Sydney Boys/Girls High School bought an ex KST, ex Panorama (29), ex Action Ansair MAN.

I saw a few days ago there is a newer bus there, haven't been able to work out what it is yet.

AS yet, I haven't seen the front of the bus, as it has been parked "nose in". But that front will be a give away when my chance comes.

Thx.

Caught the 900 home today from Strathfield Station. The particular trip was operated by my favourite Veolia!! (411 Volvo B12BLE Bustech). Is it just me or does it seem awfully slow??
Is the Bustech body heavier than the Volgren CR228L body? because it certainly seems that way...

They sound rather nice when they fire into life in the Tramshed at Hamilton, Especially the meatier sounding ones like 1407, 1427 and 1607. Once they get going though they sound like a bloody vacuum cleaner. 1585 adn 1586 still hvae the noisy diff which was supposed to be fixed under warranty, now they sound very alike the hubs in a MKIV!

The best of the bunch though is the new EuroV's the E series engine is onviously a marked improvement over the lethargic D series. The Euro V's sound like a Mk5 at idle, with a meaty note right through the range.

It might seem that way, as it is fitted with the rare I-shift gearbox (well rare for Volvo route buses in Australia). It is essentially an automated 12-speed manual gearbox, a few more gears than the 4-speed Voith and the 6-speed ZF you'll find in other VST's! Im not sure if its the right transmission for a city-bus application, I'd say its better suited for intercity-buses found in Europe.

As for the body, the Volgren has an essentially aluminium frame construction and the Bustech a stainless steel, additionally Bustech use alot of composite/plastic panels. I doubt there is much weight difference, certainly not enough to notice a distinct performance difference like you note - it probably just comes down to the I-Shift gearbox found in 411.

B&N Coaches have repainted their Mk 1 into 'STA' colours to match the other two Mk IIs they have in service. No sign of 2361 at the depot, so perhaps it was getting rego? There is also an unregd Tourmaster ex???

Spotted Hillsbus 14.5m Scania (mo 9319 I think) doing an Optus charter around 6.00pm on Friday night driving through Macquarie Uni. Obviously it was not needed on the M2 city services?

I would think that it would do the Optus charter towards the City and then an M2 service from the City to save on empty running.

Yes and that would be making too much sense!

However running it on service in then special back then a bus special in and an M2 service back would work quite fine! lol

While we are at it lets chuck a bendy on a 702 on a saturday!
