Hobart Coaches

Post by LocoLes »

In preparing this thread I came across a couple of buses not showing up anywhere in fleet lists hence the delay in my post. :| I had hoped to post them in the tribute photo page but the earlier photos have since been removed - hence my new post here.

The Ansair bodied CH4665 [Mercedes-Benz ?] appears not to be recorded but may show up somewhere else .

PMCSA Scania CJ-5680 was once owned by Tassie Link but not showing in Hobart Coaches lists.

Lastly my 3rd photo of the PMCSA Scania on Sandy Bay Rd unfortunately is too hard to correctly identify.

Will leave it to the experts to 'solve' the mystery please.

Morning LocoLes. The original Hobart Coaches list is not existent (AFAIK) as no-one was recording them onto the site back then, although in saying that, if we talked to the likes of 1whoknows, E.L.Wood, venturatiger, DENAIR or Bruce Tilley, I would imagine we could compile a list. The 1st shot would be either #2 or #3 (#2 I think) a 1316 MB / Ansair VIC body. Your 2nd & 4th photo is (obviously) #21 K92 / PMC Commuter with CAG gearbox. This was based in Snug for most of it's HC days. Your 3rd pic is that of HC/Metro #8 (originally Hobart Coaches #17) again K92 / PMC Commuter but without the CAG box. #17 (#8) ended up at Wisby Buses in Margate until being sold around late 2015. The 1316's history/location is unknown, likewise, I don't know where #21 ended up (as Tassielink had (2) of this style (#19/#21) #19 is still with Tassielink. Hope this clears up a little history for you. Great shots, and great memories  especially HC/Metro #8 (as I created the updated destination for that) :D Never drove #2 (or #3) however did take #21 through to Launceston once on football charter. Cruised along nicely. If I can find my photos, I'll include them below.

Hi Neil, Thanks for this info and I reckon you have solved the Hobart Coaches mysteries. I located my photo of what may be the second PMC Commuter Scania K92 you mention that may have been ex HC [also with Tassie Link as #79 FJ 2023]. Will attach with this reply. :D

That's her. #19 was based at Cygnet. There were two mid-mount versions K82 I think they were called, and they were units #22 & #24 however #24 burnt to the ground after catching fire from an electrical issue. Luckily no-one on board. IMO, this was a very attractive body style (well I liked it anyway) :D

Seeing as though the subject is Hobart Coaches I have attached photos of later vehicles [Scania Orana] operating whilst 'in the care of' Metro. The photo of #16 bears a different registration plate to that shown in Fleet Lists so I have cropped it to hopefully confirm it is actually number 16. Fleet Lists indicates MET 191 holds rego plate EW 0662.
Happy New Year! :D

Mmmmm, good pick-up LocoLes  I wonder when the regos were changed. I'll try and find some photos in my collection and enquire at work (when admin staff return) More importantly, I wonder what 191 had to start with. Trying to remember when we received 190 / 191 compared to 15 / 16. I know we had 12 initially (1999) and later 10 (643) as 10 was running around with 643 on it for quite a while.

Based on registrations issued I see the order being 12 (EC7580), 13 (EF 0436), 10 (EJ7784), 14 (EN5879), 16 (EW0659), 15 (EW0660), 190 (EW0661), 191 (EW0662), followed by 237 and 239 which remained on MET plates. So 15, 16, 190, 191 must have transferred across at the one time.

My earliest shot of 191 as EW0662 is from May 2005 and still the same in 2009, my previous shot was in 2001, still with MET191 plates. A shot of 16 in November 2004 shows it as EW0662, but the next time I got it in 2011 it has EW0659 plates fitted, so that narrows down the time frame.
yolo seems to be a bit of a trend!

I've also found November 2004 shots as 15 as EW0661 and 190 as EW0659

My records indicate that
EW0659 was originally on 190
EW0660 was originally on 191
EW0661 was originally on 15
EW0662 was originally on 16
this would be from onewhoknows trip to Tassy in November 2004 as my shots are duplicate slides from 1WK
while by the time of my visit in May 2005, they had been placed on the buses in numerical fleet number order
yolo seems to be a bit of a trend!

I don't know where the thought came from in regard to #239. It has been suggested by a few, but we NEVER had #239 at Hobart Coaches, wasn't even a spare.
Hobart Coaches ONLY ever had #237 (from new) which of course was absorbed back into the Metro fleet when the HC livery/signage disappeared.
