Redline Fix for the day.
In 1957 Redline even had hostesses on board, husband and wife team on the Brisbane Bus Walkers Tour.
Note; Even have red and yellow cups for Redline??

Nice shot of Redline's driver "Big Jim" Flanagan, and his wife Ethel who everybody called "Flan." She became quite a personality in the Centre after Jim passed away, and spent many years as the cook and all-round housekeeper at the Redline Motel at The Rock.Industry wrote:Redline Fix for the day.

Re: Rex Law's Redline Coaches
It's not often that you see a rear end shot and here is 11 on the 1957 Brisbane Bushwalkers Tour it must have been lunch under the trees
Re: Rex Law's Redline Coaches
Another rear end shot. Posted on Facebook by Barry Brook. Pic taken by his grandfather in 1957.

Re: Rex Law's Redline Coaches
This was a fairly rare issue, and unfortunately like a number of Redline tour brochure publications, was not dated.
It seems to be in pretty good condition which no doubt also helped its value.
Maybe I should go through my own collection as well....!

Some pre-warning on here would certainly be appreciated of any Redline timetables or other material coming up for sale through eBay or elsewhere. I'm sure there are many followers on here that would be interested and are following this very interesting post.
Think for yourself, while it's still legal !

Re tour brochures, I'm not sure I'd want to part with my collection. Here's the cover of a Central Australia Inclusive Tour brochure, which reflects the quality of the artwork that applied to many of the company's marketing publications.Centralian wrote:Some pre-warning on here would certainly be appreciated of any Redline timetables or other material coming up for sale through eBay or elsewhere. This was No 56, back of beyond.Industry wrote:No sure if this combination would be legal today, found this photo on the internet and not sure of the story here.
I'm trying to track down the story behind the photo.
Re: Rex Law's Redline Coaches
I took that photo of a photo on the wall of the Drivers room at the Kulgera Roadhouse.
Re: Rex Law's Redline Coaches
I have just another one of these badges to my collection, bought at a garage sale on the weekend for $2.00 a bargain.

Re: Rex Law's Redline Coaches
Does anyone know if the remains of this early redline Coach is still on the side of the old highway south of Alice Springs.
Did not have the time to research the number this week.

This is the Watt Bros Commer, ex No 21....burnt out due to a pressure pack explosion in the rear baggage hold during a Centre Camping tour on the morning of 8 August 1964.Industry wrote:Does anyone know if the remains of this early redline Coach is still on the side of the old highway south of Alice Springs.

The remains are still there to this day, between Mt Eba and Erldunda, hidden some distance away from the later sealed Lasseter Highway alignment.
Here's a shot of the wreck taken a quarter of a century later in 1988.
Re: Rex Law's Redline Coaches
It interesting the difference in the sign writing on these two coaches at Coober Pedy.
I wonder if the driver of Landliner got into trouble for not using the additional wooden step to let the passengesr off.

Here were Nos 53 (left) and 72 (right) in front of Brewsters Roadhouse and Motel.Industry wrote:It interesting the difference in the sign writing on these two coaches at Coober Pedy.

During the intervening period between the introduction of each of these units into service Rex and I had discussed and agreed on the advantages of giving the company name much more prominence. The more stylized font (as seen on the front of No 72 in this photo) was selected for the sides and the block font (as seen in my avatar) for front and back. These unfortunately were often mis-applied, as in the photo, much to the grinding of my gears.
I have no record as to when the first delivery carrying the new livery occurred, but it was certainly between August 1965 and April 1966, the respective delivery dates of the above units.
We instituted a program to have the entire fleet done of course, which certainly hadn't ensnared No 53 by the time this photo was taken!
And yes Industry, no brownie points for 53's driver...step-box wize...!!
(It could be he drove away and left it sitting on the ground at his previous stop....this wasn't unheard of to be honest.)

Re: Rex Law's Redline Coaches
Thankfully my era was the mono with the pull up slide around and out then fold down step, better than any box or lowering front airbags which some could take for ever.Industry wrote:Over the years I done that myself, I think I lost 5 portable steps

Re: Rex Law's Redline Coaches
No 56 was one of the coaches allocated to Centre express services and was fitted with a single extra night-driving light, as were one or more of the other units on Centre and Nullarbor express operations.Looselion wrote:This was No 56, back of beyond.Industry wrote:No sure if this combination would be legal today, found this photo on the internet and not sure of the story here.
I'm trying to track down the story behind the photo.
I can't trace the exact circumstances so am assuming this was the result of a severe mechanical issue, possibly brought about by the 401 motor's dislike of any marginal cooling effect.
I'm also assuming the coach was pictured while being transported to Redline's Alice Springs depot for mechanical repairs.
Here's the only shot I have of the Alice depot:

Re: Rex Law's Redline Coaches
I'm sure that the building is still being used in Alice Springs and cannot remember whom was in their a couple of years ago, maybe Genman could remember. It could have been Wayside Bus.
Re: Rex Law's Redline Coaches
I believe this is a Redline Coach on one of the first trips between Brisbane and Sydney
