I think it may be a due to a contractual obligation to replace buses of a certain age- say around 18 years from PTV services.

It is 20 years, at least for one major operator.

Couldn't possibly be Transdev then...
Interestingly, if this is the case, the oldest of their fleet of Mercedes low floors will be coming up to 20 years old next year according to the fleet lists.

Yep, so sounds like a good idea to re-sticker some from SmartBus to PTV livery, right? I suspect they will still be kicking for awhile yet.

Given it seems like a significant refurbishment including recovering or replacing seats (not sure which), I suspect you're probably right...

Could it be be that only new buses purchased after Transdev commenced operation is subject to the 20 year rule?

Anything is possible in the dodgy world of government tendering, but I suspect the reality is that the rule is for all buses, but is just not enforced. A current example is that I thought I'd read that the Mk IIs were meant to be retired 2 years ago (specifically mentioned in the contract previously but no longer found at: http://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/about-ptv/vic ... greements/), yet I still see one occasionally operating a northbound service from Elgar Rd through Shoppingtown around 8am in the morning. I doubt Transdev have suffered any repercussions for breaking that part of the franchise agreement, although I can't seem to find it in the copy I have, so maybe I imagined it.

In fact, if you have a copy of the contract, there are some other interesting conditions. For example, what is the "Thoreb next stop system" that needs to be implemented on all buses by 31 July 2018? All buses should have been wrapped in PTV livery vinyl by 31 July 2014. Also, passenger satisfaction must be at least 80% by the end of this year. And good luck getting fare evasion down to 2.3% by 2021 by getting drivers to harass passengers... (all in section 5 from page 226)

This is the LCD screens that were fitted to the Gemilangs when they were delivered. Never seen it display any information though, looks like it will be an improvement over the orange LED display if they ever decide to use it. They were previously fitted to the Gemilang artics (117, 118) but have since been replaced with the standard LED SmartBus displays instead.

Noticed that when Transdev's Mercedes Benz O405NH/Custom Coaches CB60s were refurbished they appeared to have the driver's 'Thoreb' unit, may be wrong though so don't quote me on that. ;)

Only a couple of refurbished Mercs were given the Thoreb in 2014. Two ex-MBL Scania were also given the system upon refurbishment and have been plagued by electrical problems since. I can only conclude that the program was cancelled as most of the CR222Ls have been refurbished without said system.

When Transdev first took over, they promised buses would be refurbished at 13 years of age, and taken out of service at 20 years. Refurbishment program seems to have stopped, but others would know better

When Connex first took over, they promised that the "older-model" (Hitachi) trains would all be replaced with new ones (that was #8 of their original 10-point plan). I guess you can't trust any company when it comes to promises.

These survivors take the cake, all entering service prior to 1975 with the last sets only being retired in 2014, five years after Connex threw in the towel:
3M (289M, 1973, unmodified cab)
7M (295M, 1973, mod cab, open layout)
9M (277M, 1973, mod cab but never led in service under Connex or Metro, it did during the Met/Bayside era however)
10M (273M, 1973, mod cab)
21M (274M, 1974, unmod cab)
22M (283M, 1974, unmod cab)
23M (299M, 1974, mod cab)
36M (287M, 1974, unmod cab)
37M (288M, 1974, mod cab)
304D (1999T, 1973, empty driver's cab and 1970s nose door intact)
312D (1975T, 1974, T car end in place of cab)
909T (1909T, 1973)
910T (1910T, 1974)
919T (1919T, 1974)

There needs to be some context as to why Connex's 2000 promise to replace every last Hitachi was not adhered to - they did order enough trains to achieve this.

Most of the remaining Hitachi sets came across from M>Train, who even under the government administration had not entered many of the Siemens into service - my first ride on a Siemens train on the Frankston line was the morning Connex took over!

As we know a few Hitachis stuck around to provide extra services during the Commonwealth Games, but rather than being withdrawn in April 2006 they kept going. By the end of 2006, there were regular reports of brake failures with the Siemens fleet, and by February 2007 half of the Sienens sets were out of service and there were 37 scheduled cancellations each day to cope for this mess. Obviously the last Hitachis were not going to be withdrawn until the issue was resolved (which was the fitting of sand boxes).

The removal of zone 3, higher fuel prices and the beginning of the expansion of the CBD jobs into Docklands in the following year resulted in an unplanned jump in patronage, with the government chasing their tail to order new trains to cater for this continual growth. It was only in 2013 they seemed to have caught up to the point where enough additional X'traps were running which meant the Hitachis could be quietly withdrawn by the end of that year.

In contrast, Transdev have failed to receive delivery of sufficient replacement buses to replace the last of the Mk2s, especially if you also count the second-hand buses ex Ventura/Grenda that were only meant to be an interim measure due to rust issues with Mk2s at the time of takeover. 3 years into the contract, they are still 12 buses overdue for replacement, 13 if you count #300 as well.

There will finally be a little bit of breathing space once these go, as the first O405NHs don't turn 20 until the very end of next year.

(Also, Connex did not throw in the towel - that was NX. They simply lost the contract.)

Kind Regards

VL00 was numbered that because it was a replacement for VL29 that was scrapped after the Ararat Line crash. Being a 2 car they couldn't give it VL43 that would have put the numbering stystem out at the time (2 cars VL01-VL18... 3 cars VL19>).

The first PTV livery delivery for Cranbourne Transit, #66 (Scania K310UB, Volgren) poses #64 (Scania K310UB, Volgren), possibly the last bus they'll receive in the 2010s Cranbourne Transit livery, seen on yesterday's BCSV September Tour Day 2: South-East Melbourne Operators (25/09/2016)

This is one of several new buses to purchased for network upgrades scheduled for November, with #65 to arrive shortly (already recorded on the fleet lists as delivered).

The first buses to wear the 2010s livery (a variation of a short-lived Bus Queensland livery) arrived in conjunction with the last major network upgrade in December 2010.

Dysons #839 (Fusa Rosa) now wears PTV livery for the Woodend Flexiride that began on Monday. This was new in 2008 as #28 to Wangaratta Coachlines, and has recently relocated from Wangaratta depot to Kyneton depot.

As per the fleet lists, Ventura #1292 for Dandenong depot has now arrived - although shown as a Volvo B7RLE, there is debate on Facebook that this may actually be a B8RLE. Photo from K230UB.

Transit Graphics meanwhile has sighted Cranbourne Transit #68 (Scania K310UB, Volgren) at this week's Sydney Bus Show:
