Road 1 is the lifting track, with under floor mounted jacks which can lift a six car train and then lower the centre of the jack to disengage the bogies for service. Roads 2-5 with raised tracks for under train inspection and elevated working platforms for roof working. The overhead solid conductor (25kv) has isolating sections at each end of the shed for safe working. To the left of the main building is the Wheel Lathe building on road 8, which can reshape wheels without the need to remove the wheels from the train.

Yes the trains are to have side destination displays. The Wulkuraka Maintenance Centre is next to the much upgraded Wulkuraka station, second station from Ipswich and runs almost to Karrabin station There is no public access to the Maintenance Centre.( there was only access on the public open day before the NGR train arrived)

Wulkuraka Maintenance Centre
I found information on it through a simple google search, despite also having spent some 22 years living there. I guess Google must be new to a few people here.

Why do they need such aerodynamic noses on suburban trains? And why are the brakes so radically different to trains before it? They seem a bit exposed. Interior looks nice.
A pity Sydney doesn't have trains like this .Queensland are lucky they aren't tied down to a 1960s double decker concept and are free to obtain normal trains according to world best practise.

The existing SMU260's and IMU160's have a similar setup.

Disc brakes, narrow guage=less room between the wheels=put them on the outside.

Not uncommon on standard gauge trains either.

Why don't they employ conventional shoes pushing against the wheels ?

What's the advantage of having those things added on when trains have slowed down fine without them before!
Even buses are overkill with disc brakes!

Cars stopped ok with drum brakes before too and I am sure you will agree that these days having a drum brake fitted car is a little bit daft.

The biggest advantage of discs on a train is a greater surface area, meaning you need less brakes per train and they are more efficent. They also help to reduce the unsprung weight.

QR have had problems with wheel slide when braking in wet conditions with the IMU/SMU units causing station over runs and the accident at Cleveland in January 2013( The full ATSB report can be read at https://www.atsb.gov.au/media/4354235/r ... _final.pdf ) and the trains are being/have been retrofitted with sanding gear. No doubt the NGR trains braking performance in being extensively tested.

The NGR units will be the first suburban units to have the coupling device on the ends of the train covered by a cowling, like the tilt train and the Spirit of Queensland. Sometimes the EMU units are coupled two trains together (12 cars) and go though Roma St (to the washing shed?) If this is done with the NGR trains it would be more difficult, needing to remove the cover.

Mercedes Benz introduced ABS in 1981 on their flagship S class saloons and tbe technology has been standard fare on all cars and many buses and trucks for decades now. I can't see why it can't work to stop the wheels on a train locking up.

There are systems that do exactly that. But that doesn't help them stop overruns. It would just prevent the wheels locking up.

ABS is supposed to help the vehicle stop effectively in the wet. Why don't I hear of this problem in Sydney's system?
Does this not show that these brakes ate too grabby for train use?

Disk brakes have been used on trains since the 1980s. They are fitted to NSW trains. See http://www.otsi.nsw.gov.au/rail/Investi ... -final.pdf Rail Safety Investigation Report Derailment of CityRail Service 312A. The braking systems have built in devices to counter wheel slide but the fall back position would seem to be slower speeds and sanding.

Do we all not reailse that the IMU100/120 series have been using rotor/disc brakes since 1996/1999???
ajw373 wrote:But that doesn't help them stop overruns. It would just prevent the wheels locking up
Incorrect. Physics my friend....

ABS helps prevent overrun by not locking the wheels. Once the wheels are locked, they slide further uncontrollably and more freely aiding in an overrun. ABS limits the amount of brake pressure applied in order to give maximum braking effectivness on the edge of adhesion of wheel to rail.

ABS works by comparing the rotational speeds of all wheels on the vehicle, and activates if it detects partial lockup of the wheelset. In a car, say, the front wheels lock but the rears don't.

It can have a problem if ALL the wheels lock simultaneously, because it can't tell if the vehicle is stationery or not.
