In 1968 Islander 1 was operating the service to Rottnest Island and in 1984 'Star Flyte' was the vessel......what a difference in appearance. The sea trip was still rough though but it is a really nice place to visit, a pity as we only went for the day trip on both occasions! Attached are my memories of the 2 ferries.

Re: Rottnest Island Ferry
Les - great shots and thanks very much for sharing these and the bus pictures.
I remember when Star Flyte was the new ferry on the block and the duck's guts compared to the older vessels - can't believe it was so long ago!

Re: Rottnest Island Ferry
Many thanks for posting the picture of MV Islander I. It is one of the best colour shots that I have seen of this vessel before alterations that changed her appearance significantly were undertaken. She is at the bottom of the ocean off the New South Wales coast now. Type B Fairmile motor launch.
I travelled to Rottnest Island earlier this week on MV Star Flyte and she is still operating on the run, from Barrack Street jetty in Perth. But she now carries a very different livery.
Thanks for posting the other pictures from your trips to Western Australia. Not only have the buses and trains changed, but so have the backgrounds and buildings etc. The Perth suburban railway is now nothing like it was in the diesel and early electric era. If you have more pictures from Western Australia, then please bring them on. One point is that visitors often photograph scenes that we locals think may be too everyday, - so they don't get recorded. Or visitors find themselves in locations that the locals haven't sussed out for photos.
CAT 5 in one of your pictures is now preserved by the Bus Preservation Society of WA. Sadly, locomotive hauled excursion trains do not run into Perth any longer. Its a different transport scene here now.
Great stuff. Thanks again.

Hi Dennis96
Pleased you are enjoying the photos. I am preparing some tram photos [PETS and Freo and Perth Explorers] and can do some aircraft at Perth airport later if anyone is interested in F28's and 727's etc.
Cheers, LocoLes

Re: Rottnest Island Ferry
After working and living on Rotto for 5 years I remember the Starflyte and Sea Eagle III well. The one boat I do miss is The Superflyte. I would love to see a couple of pics if this if available. 20 mins between Northport and Rotto in the 90s was fantastic.

I can help you with SuperFlyte. Saw her running the service between Sorrento and the island of Capri in the Gulf of Naples, Italy last October. Here is the picture, plus one when she was operating in Western Australia.

Re: Rottnest Island Ferry
Just added another photograph of Star Flyte arriving at Fremantle c.1984 to pick up these passengers and their baggage, also cargo in the crates.

Re: Rottnest Island Ferry
I photographed the Rottnest Island ferry Temeraire II at Fremantle in 1979 but the photo has not copied so well from my original slide. I have posted it anyway, as it may be of interest. Another distant photo is of Temeraire II heading up river to Perth.
