Question regarding rail closures
With the Adelaide-Salisbury electrification expected to take place during the next couple of years, is there a chance we'll see some withdrawn (from regular service) SL202s on rail sub runs between Adelaide and Salisbury? I'm just curious.

Re: Question regarding rail closures
You'd think that all the ex- rail sub CB80s would be rail subs again, instead of the SL 202s

Re: Question regarding rail closures
There is still over 30 MAN SG280 Artics stored at Elizabeth Depot, that can be reinstated for use as rail subs if the electrification does proceed?

Re: Question regarding rail closures
I would've thought that the SGs would reached their age limit even for rail sub use by then. When was the last time a 29-31 year old bus saw use on an Admet run?
Nonetheless, though, it'd be nice to catch them again, especially the ones with ZFs. I do miss 2364 and 2367 a little bit.

Re: Question regarding rail closures
With the "Torrens to Torrens" South Rd project involving the elevation of the Outer Harbor/Grange railway over South Rd (fact sheet link: http://www.infrastructure.sa.gov.au/__d ... y_2014.pdf) those lines may be looking at upcoming closures to accommodate the project.

A temporary bypass single rail track will be able to operate during construction, resulting in only minor service disruptions over a six to nine month construction timeframe.

Next station is Victoria Square. Change here for all trains.

With 6 trains outbound and 5 trains inbound between 5pm and 6pm combined with vehicles it could get messy

Re: Question regarding rail closures
Maybe there will be no Grange train with the Outer Harbor train been 30mins and not 15mins.

Re: Question regarding rail closures
I have trouble contemplating how a road can be lowered under a new rail bridge while the road is still in use and a temporary bypass track (which won't be that far from the new bridge) has a level crossing on the same road.

Re: Question regarding rail closures
IMO the South roads will need be lowered first then the railway put over the new roads. I don't see how a temporary railway would work without being disruptive to the rest of the projectThe Phonj wrote:I have trouble contemplating how a road can be lowered under a new rail bridge while the road is still in use and a temporary bypass track (which won't be that far from the new bridge) has a level crossing on the same road.

Re: Question regarding rail closures
According to the artist's impression in the factsheet there will be eventually be 10 lanes of roadway under the rail bridge plus reservations for the piers. Because of the substation most of the road formation will be to the east of the existing alignment. The excavation of the surface roads will presumably be c. 1-2m. The temporary rail track will most likely be on the south side of the existing rail line and could be located to avoid too much of a climb to/from the excavated section. It should be possible to accomodate 4 lanes of roadway through the bridge location while it is constructed. Partial excavation of the underpass lanes could take place before the bridge spans are installed and rail established over the bridge.Eurostar wrote:IMO the South roads will need be lowered first then the railway put over the new roads. In many ways the project is similar to the Gallipoli underpass & tram overpass which was accomplished with staged work while maintaining traffic flows. Traffic also may be encouraged to take alternative routes such as James Congdon Drive which will be duplicated between South and Sir Donald Bradman.

Re: Question regarding rail closures
It gets tricky, but it can be done. The Phonj wrote:I have trouble contemplating how a road can be lowered under a new rail bridge while the road is still in use and a temporary bypass track (which won't be that far from the new bridge) has a level crossing on the same road.
The easiest way is generally to temporarily divert the road to one side, assemble the rail bridge on the old road alignment, and then move it into place during a rail shutdown and then dig out around it. (Try Googling Taylors Road or Anderson Road in Melbourne for examples)
It's certainly a little more complicated because the rail line is going to be raised slightly as well. Although it wouldn't be impossible to also include a temporary rail line diversion, depending on the amount of space that's available.
