Re: The Falcon USA Coupe We Didnt Get here.
There are few american Ford Falcons out here that were imported. The car in the picture is what we call the XR Falcon built between 1966-1968 which came in four door sedan,Station wagon,Ute and Panel van and Fairmont but we never got the two door in the picture.

The Americans always got a much bigger choice of body styles than we did.
Some of those Mercury designs ended up on the larger Galaxy models too

Re: The Falcon USA Coupe We Didnt Get here.
Ford could have had a good challenger to the Monaro if they had've kept the hardtop body with the XR range onwards... obviously a two-door hardtop would be a bit more lighter and nimble than a four-door. The problem was that Ford of Australia was busy trying to make their Falcons more robust and capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of Australia, and eventually swapped over to their own development platform as families wanted roomier sedans and men wanted bigger and beefier utes. That and back in the day Ford left most of the sporty work to the little Cortina Lotus and its spiritual successor the Cortina GT before the big XR GT came out.boronia wrote:The Americans always got a much bigger choice of body styles than we did.

The '65-'68 Galaxies sold here were built at Ford's Canadian plant then shipped in CKD to Ford Australia's Homebush plant for assembly. '69-'72 Galaxies were converted to RHD here in Australia as they were fully imported from North America, so I think those models would have been pretty much identical to their LHD counterparts.

Here are the Ford Fairlanes. You can see where the ZA,ZB,ZC,ZD came from.

Coupes for America seem to be the rage. There are plenty of coupes that were for the American market only.

Re: The Falcon USA Coupe We Didnt Get here.
1960s and 1970s American culture often involved boys impressing girls with big V8 coupes, or small coupes with V8s grafted into their bodies. Even after the Mustang got downsized in its second generation, it was still popular. So was the Corvette.Nugget wrote:Coupes for America seem to be the rage. Unfortunately, the Supercar Superscare put an end to similar stuff here. Hadn't Canberra intervened, GMH would have put the V8 Torana out to market earlier, Ford would have began building its Phase IVs, and Chrysler would have popped bigger Hemis into their Valiant Chargers.
And many young folk would be in serious car crashes because of their intentions to travel at 200+ km/h down the few motorways 1970s Australia had.

Then there were the Mercury Comets made by Lincoln -Mercury.Made on the same production line. All owned then by Ford Motor Company.

There were also convertible versions of most of these Falcons in the USA.

The Canadians preferred our size cars to the USA big version
Brazil is another country that made xm etc size Fords and continued production into the 80s as well as 40s land cruisers and Beetles

In the Falcon line up from late 1966 onwards model there wasnt a convertible.Ford brought out their Mustang convertible. The American Falcon production ended in 1970.Mercury introduced their Cougar in 1967 and their convertible in 1969.

Re: The Falcon USA Coupe And Mercury Comets We Didnt Get her
Ford US also made a completely different series of "compact" Fairmonts to us, whereas our version of the Fairmont was merely an upmarket rebadged Falcon.
Actually, in some cases, they didn't even drop the Falcon name with the Fairmont. The XP was a Falcon Fairmont and carried both badges as with the others of the time (e.g. Falcon Futura, Falcon Squire), and the GTs were all Fairmonts rather than base model Falcons, although they were never badged as such (even the EL GT was a Fairmont, complete with the Fairmont bonnet, large grille insert (although the grille itself was specifically made for the GT), headlights, and the carryover EF tail lights which had the clear indicator lenses instead of the cheap-looking amber of the EL Falcon sedans - in contrast to the EL wagons which all had clear indicators). In South Africa, the classic Falcon GTs actually were Fairmont GTs.
