Former MTT BUT Trolleybus No. 311

Post by LocoLes »

In October 2007 during a visit to QVM at Inveresk I was fortunate to view former MTT Launceston BUT Trolleybus No. 311 that had been partially restored. The bus was stored away from public view and the attached photographs indicate the vehicle was awaiting further restoration. Perimeter seats at the rear were the only seating installed up till 2007. Exterior paintwork was in MTT livery with fleet numbers applied.

WOW :!: :!: Never knew they had that. We visited as an enthusiast group in 2011, and there was no mention of it

Hi

they have a half cab leyland tiger I think as well. Cant recall the number.

When I saw it a couple of years back, the framework was undergoing an extensive rebuild.

Trolley bus was also in the same condition as in the photos.

Hi all,
Re the Launceston Tiger... it is No. 358 [one of the two 1942 Leyland models]. I enquired re 358 that same day and was informed the QV Museum needed a coachbuilder to complete the timber frame-work but it was not parked with the trolleybus [311]. I have not seen 358 WIP. One day hopefully we will get to enjoy looking at 3 ex Launceston Tigers [358, 366 plus 361 at TTMS] Cheers, LocoLes.

That is great to see 311 on its way back to original condition! I knew QVM had at least one (any others?) trolley bus, but thought it was pretty much a shell. It is great to think that the three main designs of trolley bus in Tasmania are now represented in preservation (up until now, the Launceston BUT's were the main missing link). The only design missing now is the original Hobart dual rear axle Leylands.

Anyone know where 311 came from? I remember back in the 1980's a fairly intact Launceston trolley bus (inc. trolley poles and all) was in a back-yard in Colebrook. Is this it or was that another one?

Hi All,
There is a photograph in the QVM,s annual report for 2003/2004 of Trolleybus 311 undergoing restoration and Leyland Tiger 358 is in the back ground.
Once you have found the QVM website, type in annual reports in their search area and a list of reports will appear. Click on 2003/2004 and go to page 28.
there it is!
Cheers, LocoLes.

Hi AEC Regal,
Roughly 10 or so years ago an item appeared in 'The Examiner' promoting Kellara Transport [a photograph and short story underneath]. I kept that item and will attach it here, note this is only a guess but maybe this is No.311 on the back. I did forward an S.A.E. to Kellara Transport at the time [ I asked if the trolley was headed for restoration] but got no response at all. Cheers, LocoLes.

Thanks LocoLes.

Unfortunately the caption only refers to the tilt tray and doesn't state where it is collecting the trolley bus from! The mystery continues....

Firstly I must mention that this Examiner, Launceston newspaper photo has been placed in this particular post [former MTT BUT Trolleybus No.311] because there is mention of it [Leyland TS11 #358] in the text above. I recently located the cutting amongst my collection of such items and the old diesel bus is briefly shown alongside TB311 in the video extension in the above post.
MTT No.358 [ex LMT 58] condition appears unchanged in the past 17 odd years but at least it is still in existence, most likely awaiting the skills of tradesmen to complete the restoration at QVM, Inveresk. Similar to tram bodies of the period #358 has a wooden frame which appears to be in need of complete replacement. Thanks to The Examiner for this news item from around c.2000. :)
