Thanks for this interesting photo, Roderick.
Not that I'm an expert on the topic, but my understanding is that the number 6485U appearing on what was a 'white on red ground' plate to the nearside of the radiator grille had little or nothing to do with identifying this (or any other) vehicle in the WAGR Road Services fleet. Afaik, these plates were a WA 'peculiarity', very loosely akin to the series of ''Q t/p'' plates issued to buses in Queensland at one time.
In WA, the 'white on red' plates were issued / applied to certain 'freight carriage' vehicles, mostly 'farm' trucks, to show they were legally allowed to cart certain categories / types of commodities / goods in rural areas served by WAGR trains, but subject to (stringent?) conditions. Not exactly sure why, or what restrictions happened to be in force at the time, but I suspect the governing WA legislation had much to do with protecting the rapidly dwindling freight business of WAGR against ever increasing competition from (more attractive / convenient) road based transport.
Hopefully, more knowledgeable ATDB members with communication skills above 'Neanderthal level', such as the esteemed Dennis96, will be able to shed additional / more intensive light on the subject in the near future.

I remember seeing those plates on some trucks and some buses when I was at school in the late 50's & early 60's.
Never knew what they were for.

I can confirm Panther998 is correct as I have this fact in a number plate collectors book of plate identification ( I used to collect number plates many years ago)
