Bus Racing In Australia: are you interested?
Here's an idea, how about Australian Bus Racing? I'm not talking about Sesame Street (The Hume Highway),I'm talking about getting some buses in some almost roadworthy condition and racing them around a closed circuit track. We have truck racing here so why not bus racing.Anyone got some old Bedfords that need a new lease of life?
Where will we hold the championships?
Do you remember when the guys on the UK "Top Gear" show raced some buses? We need to do that here. What sort of buses should we race? How about the mini bus racing category followed by anything up to 35 feet then your 40 footers and after that your artics? Just think of the novelty of it. What about your coach racing? Have you got an old coach thats ready to hit the track? PMC Apollo's vs Pressed Metal's Whatever's.Would you go to a race track/circuit to see bus racing?
I think any form of bus motor racing from dirt speedway,Bathurst, dirt rallying, drag racing, smash up derby,Cannonball Run,Jet Bus Racing,Monster bus racing,Land speed records out on the dry salt lakes, etc is up for grabs. There are plenty of guys and girls who would love to put on a crash helmut and race. And,how many people would love to go to these races? Wouldnt you love to see some old buses on dirt tracks or how about Calder Park Thunderdome? I think it needs to be done. I think CAMS need to add it to their list.
Its amazing what you can find online.I found these:

If you'd like to come up with some sketches or photoshop photos of your racing bus/coach please add them here.
How about some names for race series and the naming of trophies. Here are 2 ideas:
The Rex Law Memorial Bus Racing Chapionship Trophy.
The Alan.B.Denning Memorial Bus Racing Championship Trophy.
I thought we need a topic on buses and coaches for fun. You're welcome to add your bus racing videos, photos, ideas here.
We need an outlet to legally have fun with buses and coaches. Are you interested? Enjoy.

Re: Bus Racing In Australia?
I don't know about which buses, but there are a few drivers out my way who could be nominated for a start.

A few years ago there was actually a bus drag race in Queensland between a MAN 18.290 and a Volvo B7R, not sure which vehicle won though... http://www.qt.com.au/news/this-is-one-s ... g/1248231/
Re: Bus Racing In Australia?
A few years ago Channel 7 reported the Westpoint tunnel near Blacktown station was a racing track for buses.

Re: Bus Racing In Australia?
If this was to ever eventuate, I'd suggest ex rail bus R565 (Merc O305G) vs one of the old Adelaide Dennis Darts in a drag race across the Nullarbor plain to see which one's engine would survive the longest
Re: Bus Racing In Australia?
there was a double decker race in 4/77 at Brisbane Exhibition Ground, one of the deckers was x 1778 x Port Macquarie Bus Service, then owned by REX Law .

Actually there were a few d/decker races at the Exhibition Speedway.LB608 wrote:there was a double decker race in the 70's/80's at Brisbane Exhibition Ground
One regular driver was Rex Law of Redline and 1949 Leyburn Aust Grand Prix fame. This was familiar territory for Rex who had successfully raced his No 32 midget speed-car there in the late '40's - early '50's. I have a photo of him in action in a close fought race in the book I'm writing about him and Redline.
Here's Rex in his other mount, the Cadillac V8 powered Regal Special, No 1, in one of his last road-race outings at Strathpine, Qld, in 1953, before hanging up his helmet (which I still have displayed in my cabinet) due to the pressure of his growing local and interstate coach tours business.
I'm searching for an image of him "hanging the tail out" in his D/Decker.......

We could always name a race series in his honor. How about "The Rex Law Memorial Bus Racing Championship Trophy"?Looselion wrote:Actually there were a few d/decker races at the Exhibition Speedway.LB608 wrote:there was a double decker race in the 70's/80's at Brisbane Exhibition Ground

As there was a post on his company on the forum I think you might have a lot of people support the idea.Have a look how popular the post is:Looselion wrote:Denv12 I'd certainly be in agreement with that....!!

And,how about "The Alan.B.Denning Bus Racing Chapionship Trophy"?
Re: Bus Racing In Australia?
The real interest is in making sure that every single one of these vehicles are destroyed, either by demolition or by catching fire whilst being demolished by another T.O.Y and burning to the groundDenv12 wrote:How about real buses?
