2013/2014 Summer Timetables

Post by Craig »

Surprised no-one else posted these items during the week, but anyway…

Public transport timetable changes over summer will ensure you can get where you need to go while we undertake major construction works on the Regional Rail Link and continue work to remove two level crossings in Mitcham.

During construction works, buses and coaches will ensure passengers can continue with their travel plans on sections of the Ballarat, Bendigo, Sunbury, Seymour, Albury, Shepparton and Belgrave/Lilydale train lines. Metro will also run an amended timetable across most metropolitan lines from 22 December to 26 January to accommodate the construction works.

Throughout this time, special services will continue to be provided to cater expected crowds at major events, such as New Year’s Eve, the Boxing Day Test, the Australian Open, Big Bash cricket, horse racing and A League soccer.

Key train timetable changes during December and January include:
  • Sunbury line, 28 December to 19 January: a combination of shuttle train services and replacement buses will operate.
  • Ballarat and Bendigo lines, 28 December to 19 January: coaches replacing all services.
  • Shepparton and Seymour lines, 28 December to 2 January: a mixture of coaches and trains will operate.
  • Albury line, 28 December to 19 January: a mixture of coaches and trains will operate.
  • Belgrave and Lilydale lines, 3 to 24 January: buses replacing trains between Ringwood and Blackburn.
  • Additional train and tram services for major events throughout December and January
  • Free travel state-wide on Christmas Day
  • All-night Metro trains, trams and NightRider on New Year’s Eve
  • Free public transport on New Year’s Eve, from 6pm until the first normal scheduled service on New Year’s Day. V/Line customers will also have free travel on the first V/Line service departing Melbourne on New Year’s Day.
  • Amended Metro timetable across most lines from 22 December to 26 January.

Public transport across Victoria will be free all day on Christmas Day, and after 6pm on New Year’s Eve.

On Christmas Day and after 6pm on New Year’s Eve, ticket barriers will be open at stations and you do not need to carry a ticket to travel. However, if you do touch on with your myki, you won’t be charged a fare.

The free V/Line services are popular and bookings are recommended.

Christmas Day – Wednesday 25 December
  • Public transport across Victoria will be free from first to last service.
  • Metro Trains will run a Sunday timetable.
  • Yarra Trams will run a Sunday timetable (Sunday timetable with weekday start and finish times) and the City Circle service will not operate.
  • V/Line will run a Sunday timetable with limited coach trips. Bookings are required for long-range services (Warrnambool, Bairnsdale, Swan Hill, Shepparton, Albury). All other train services come on a first-come, first served basis.
  • Bus timetables will vary and you should check your specific route
[/list]

New Year’s Eve – Saturday 31 December

Travel on metropolitan trains, trams and buses will be free from 6pm on New Year’s Eve until the first normal scheduled service on 1 January.
  • Metro Trains will run a normal Saturday timetable with increased services from 6pm and all night services. Buses will be replacing trains on the Sunbury line from 28 December 2013 - 19 January 2014, including on New Year’s Eve.
  • Yarra Trams will run a Saturday timetable with increased services from 6pm. All night services will run on all routes except Route 24, Route 30, Route 79, Route 82 and City Circle.
  • V/Line will run normal train services on the Geelong\Warrnambool and Bairnsdale lines with some altered coach services. Additional late night services will run as per the regular Saturday night timetable. Buses will be replacing trains on the Ballarat, Bendigo, Seymour and Albury lines from 28 December 2013 - 19 January 2014, including on New Year’s Eve.
  • V/Line travel will be free on services where touch on occurs after 6pm New Year’s Eve. There is also free travel on the first train departing Melbourne to each regional destination on New Year’s Day. V/Line will operate a normal Monday timetable.
  • NightRider services will operate for New Year’s Eve. Buses will depart from a temporary location on Collins Street between Swanston and Russell streets.
Bus timetables will vary and you should check your specific route
I sent PTV an email over a week ago advising much of the information above is incorrect for NYE (NYE is a Tuesday, Metro will run the second phase of their Summer Weekday TT, the reference to a Monday V/line timetable is confusing & wrong, no all night 78 trams), but alas hasn't been corrected yet…

The items below are only on the operators websites as of December 6, not the central PTV website - poor form given passengers are told PTV is the "one stop shop" for information

Monday 23 December 2013 – Monday 27 January 2014

From Christmas week through until the Australia Day long weekend, Metro services will run to a summer timetable. Changes include reduced services, altered services, bus services and weekend timetables for public holidays. This will allow for important works on two major rail projects, the Regional Rail Link and the Mitcham Level Crossing Removal project to be completed.

The below provides an overview of the summer timetable changes across the Metro network.

Image

View your line’s changes here and either download the PDF summer timetable or collect a hardcopy at your local premium station. Please note, the summer timetable for each line provides information only for when the changes occur (peak, interpeak). For all other times (evening, weekends) please refer to your regular timetable.

Across all lines, services will run to the following timetables on public holidays:

Christmas Day
Wed 25 Dec 2013 All services will run to a Sunday timetable.

Boxing Day
Thur 26 Dec 2013 All services will run to a Saturday timetable.

New Year’s Day
Wed 1 Jan 2014 All services will run to a Saturday timetable.

Australia Day
Mon 27 Jan 2014 All services will run to a Saturday timetable.

What should you do?
Travelling with Metro over this period will still be simple as long as you are well informed on the changes.

Here’s how to stay informed:
  • View your line’s changes and either download the PDF summer timetable or collect a hardcopy at your local premium station.
  • Download our metroNotify app to receive line specific updates. New information about the lines you select will be pushed to you directly from Metro’s Control Centre to help you make the best travel decisions.
  • Follow us on twitter @metrotrains. Here you’ll get updates on what’s going on at Metro and information on any unplanned disruptions.
A significant number of peak trains will be cancelled during the summer timetable, especially during the first & second phases from 23/12 to 3/1. One has to wonder how trains will cope during the last two weeks of the reduced timetable, when the majority of people will have returned to work (although no school or uni students at least).

The timetables include a nasty 39 min gap between inbound trains at Armadale, Toorak & Hawksburn between 08:27 & 09:06 - clearly too many stopping all stations trains got cut & it wasn't picked up. The PTUA already pointed this out on the news on Monday night, hopefully Metro will consider modifying the 07:59 up Frankston to stop all stations, although might not be enough space for people to squeeze on…

Weekday Interpeak Frankston trains will be cut from 10 mins to 20 mins from the entire 5 weeks right when people will be using them to reach the many beaches on the line. Weekend & public holiday services remain every 10 mins, even on Xmas Day when staff availability is pushed and overtime is at a premium.

Late morning services between Blackburn & the City will also be reduced to 15 mins, adding further travel time for those coming from the outer east via the replacement buses.

Note that Yarra Trams will only reduce Weekday frequencies for 3 working days (if you even count NYE proper as a working day) :D - contrast that to the long period Metro will be disrupting trains across the system.

Detailed news items & holiday timetables finally appeared on the PTV website today for the Metro & V/line service changes over Christmas, but still no news items for tram or bus passengers yet…

Information about the weekday afternoon loop reversal on the Northern group during the works is still a bit vague, thanks to Jarf for clarifying.

Seems this is the first item to publicise the reversal of Clifton Hill loop trains on weekends, which now run via Flinders Street before the loop as per weekdays. One would assume this is a permanent change.

PTV's advice for the Warrnambool line is somewhat incorrect - down trains generally will depart Geelong later than currently during the RRL shutdown, in the most extreme case, the 'lunchtime' train on Saturdays arrives Warrnambool 34 minutes later than normal after a painful intermission at Geelong as the train will be formed by the up 'lunchtime' train.

The tight holiday run-times in peak periods remain on the 506, where peak trips get 20 mins to get from Moonee Ponds to Westgarth, compared to 28 mins off-peak! :? :!:

There is also some odd database issues with school day only trips - the 20:50 ex Moonee Ponds is incorrectly shown as running school days only, while shortworkings appear between Moonee Ponds & Brunswick Secondary College that are omitted from the regular online timetable (these also are omitted from the printed timetable).

Is this the first New Years Eve that the Flemington Racecourse line will operate?

For that matter this the first New Years Eve that bus replacements have run?

Bus routes 475, 476, 501, 503, 506, 605 and 733 will run to a summer timetable with reduced services.

Routes 503 and 506: summer timetables in effect from 23 December 2013 to 17 January 2014
Routes 475, 476, 501, 605 and 733: summer timetables in effect from 27 December 2013 to 25 January 2014

Customers should check their timetable and journey planner before they travel.
The summer timetables for 475, 476 & 501 are not yet available while 605 & 733 will just have selected peak trips cancelled as per previous years.

Looks like the new bus contracts have seen the end of the summer holiday timetables for passengers on Transdev routes! :D

For those who can't remember, the old holiday timetables by National & Melbourne Bus Link had some quite nasty features including cutting half-hourly off-peak services to hourly, cancellation of inter-peak 283 Bulleen loop & 319 services along King St in the years prior to 2010 (now Manningham Mover & DART route 908), reduced evening frequencies, earlier finishes (in the case of 271 dropping the weeknight service altogether) & reduced Saturday services on most Melbourne Bus Link routes.

You can still download the 2012/2013 National summer timetables here & here

Still no news item on the PTV website for tram service changes over summer.

Re: 2013/2014 Summer Timetables

The Xmas & NYE free travel article on the PTV website was finally updated today rectifying a number of errors in the original item for NYE (least of all the article was previously showing NYE on a Saturday rather than a Tuesday!) - the original item is posted at the start of this thread.

Unfortunately the corrections look like they were done after a boozy end-of-year lunch, with some spelling mistakes creeping into the item. I also think the updated reference to a normal weekday timetable on NYE for Metro Trains is misleading given the summer weekday timetables will be in place.
PTV wrote: Christmas and NYE free travel

New Year’s Eve – Tuesday 31 December

Travel on metropolitan trains, trams and buses will be free from 6pm on New Year’s Eve until the first normal scheduled service on 1 January.
  • Metro Trains will run a normal weekday timetable with extra trains from 6pm and all night services. Buses will be replacing trains on the Sunbury line from 28 December 2013 - 19 January 2014, including on New Year’s Eve.
  • Yarra Trams will run a Saturday timetable with increased services from 6pm. All night services will run on all routes except Route 24, Route 30, Ruote 78, Route 79, Route 82 and City Circle.
  • V/Line will run a summer weekeday timetable for train services on the Geelong\Warrnambool and Bairnsdale lines with some altered coach services.
V/Line will operate a Saturday train and coach timetable.
  • NightRider services will operate for New Year’s Eve. Buses will depart from a temporary location on Collins Street between Swanston and Russell streets.
  • Bus timetables will vary and you should check your specific route
This later item for free travel on Xmas Day incorrectly suggests some buses will be running a Saturday timetable on Christmas Day, but at least no actual routes are listed. It should also mention tram services will begin at the normal weekday time.

Public Holiday articles posted on the PTV website this morning…

Issues include:
  • Christmas Day - V/line coaches run a very limited timetable but this is not strongly implied (suggests the timetable is closer to a Sunday timetable with alterations). 561 is omitted from the list of routes that won't be running a Sunday timetable.
  • Boxing Day - 569 & 573 are omitted from the list of bus routes running to a Saturday timetable, while 605 is omitted from the list of bus routes running to a Sunday timetable. Unclear if 468 will be running Boxing Day - there was a trial of extra services a few years back, but this trial appears not have continued.
  • New Years Day - Text that all bus routes (other than 490, 503 & 506) will be running a Saturday timetable was incorrectly copied from the NYD article from the start of 2011 - this is incorrect, as the below paragraphs clarify. 569, 573, 922 & 923 are omitted from the list of bus routes running to a Saturday timetable while 605 is omitted from the list of bus routes running to a Sunday timetable
  • 788 Summer Weekend & Public Timetable is not yet available online

Re: 2013/2014 Summer Timetables

Post by Craig »

Another aspect of the summer train timetables that does not appear to have been thought through at all is the connections to the Stony Point trains at Frankston.

6 of the 8 down trains on weekdays will not be met by their usual connection from the City as the connecting down Frankston train will be cancelled over the summer timetable period. Trains affected include:
  • 08:41 down Stony Point
  • 10:14 down Stony Point
  • 12:30 down Stony Point
  • 14:34 down Stony Point
  • 16:10 down Stony Point
  • 18:35 down Stony Point (last train of the day Monday - Thursday) - first two weeks of the summer holiday timetable when the 17:31 down Frankston won't run
Additionally, the 20:07 down Stony Point on Fridays will not be met by the 19:06 down Frankston during the first two weeks of the summer timetable either

The Stony Point timetable on the PTV website is unchanged for the summer timetable period.

Some up connections have also be cancelled, but this is not as significant as passengers can just get the following train 10 or so minutes later.

A phone call to the station staff at Frankston advised that customers are expected to catch an earlier train to make their connections….it would be nice if Metro was making this clear somewhere.  Maybe in practice they will hold the Stony Point train for the following service, as happens during day-to-day cancellations?

Kind Regards

Metro have published the altered timetables for everyone to see, well in advance of it operating. It is up to customers to make the appropriate travel arrangements. It's not like Metro has done this silently and not told anyone which trains will and won't run.

And I know this is a side point, but for the record, almost all patronage on the Stony Point train comes from or goes to Frankston, so there will be very few people affected. That said, they should hold the last train of the day just in case.

Various online information regarding NYE travel. Copies of the printed NYE Public Transport guide have begun appearing around the network.

There are some subtle differences between the article between the PTV and Yarra Trams website articles regarding tram alterations & the extra shortworkings, hence I posted both..

Free travel from 6pm
Tram travel will be free from 6pm Thursday 31 December to the start of reguarly scheduled services on 1 January. There's no need to touch on, but if you do you won't be charged.
Seems Metro have added extra trains will run after 3am for those on the Pakenham/Cranbourne & Frankston lines this year, eliminating the hour long gaps that most other lines have to tolerate. Surprised that even the Belgrave/Lilydale/Alamein customers still only get a hourly train after 2:30am though.

Once again the shuttle train options are not clearly stated in the summary online or the poster - this could easily be done with footnotes. I'm sure someone will defend the fact the information can be found on the PTV website timetables or journey planner, but passengers should not need to go hunting after reading an article prominently shown on the Metro website homepage (which fails to include a link to the PTV website timetables).

It is also not stated that passengers which stations will be open after midnight - i.e. those celebrating at Docklands or Flagstaff Gardens can board all these trains at Southern Cross, but the loop stations are shut

A news item has also finally surfaced over the weekend regarding the Albury line changes over summer...a quick look on the V/line website did not uncover the same item.
PTV wrote: Coaches replacing trains on the Albury line: Saturday 28 December 2013 - Sunday, 19 January 2014
Added: 21 December 2013

Due to Regional Rail Link works a mixture of coaches and trains will operate on the Albury line.

General Information
Please allow an extra 30 minutes for your journey.
In Melbourne, coaches will arrive and depart from the Southern Cross Station coach terminal located on Spencer Street, opposite Little Bourke Street.
No checked luggage, no bikes and no pets allowed on replacement coaches.
Customers needing special assistance please call 1800 800 007 at least 24 hours before travelling.

Saturday 28 Decemeber - Sunday 2 January
On your journey to Melbourne, you can catch a replacement bus to Southern Cross Station. Replacement buses will run express between Seymour and Melbourne.

If travelling from Melbourne, replacement buses will run from Southern Cross Station towards Albury.

Monday 3 January - Sunday 19 January
If you are travelling on either the AM or PM service from Albury, you will travel by train to Broadmeadows and then swap to a replacement bus, or you could catch a metro train from Broadmeadows.

If you need to travel from Melbourne towards Albury on either the AM or PM service, you can either catch a metro train to Broadmeadows station then board the Albury train service there, or catch a replacement coach from Southern Cross Station to Broadmeadows, and board the Albury train service there.

If you are travelling on the midday service your entire journey to and from Albury will be via a replacement bus.

Re: 2013/2014 Summer Timetables

Post by Craig »

Finally, the remaining summer holiday bus timetables are now available on the PTV website - however, dates differ from the news item posted last Monday (which is unchanged)...seems the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing??? Not good for those who might have checked the website for the summer holiday dates last week and now will find a longer wait for their bus tomorow.

Timetables for 475, 476, 501, 605 are shown as running from 23/12 to 17/1 (not 27/12 to 24/1). The 476 timetable is incorrectly showing various school day only trips.

Timetable for 733 is shown running from 30/12 to 24/1 (not 27/12 to 24/1)

Summer weekend timetable for 788 applies from 26/12 to 26/1 (not including the Australia Day substitute holiday on 27/1) - a similar issue to previous years has occurred, with the normal Saturday times appearing amongst the summer timetable for both Boxing Day & New Years Day. You'd think they could get this right by now.

Kind Regards

Craig :)

RailwayBus wrote:Metro have published the altered timetables for everyone to see, well in advance of it operating. It is up to customers to make the appropriate travel arrangements. It's not like Metro has done this silently and not told anyone which trains will and won't run.
Although it's fair to say the timetables were made available in well in advance, it wasn't made clear to Stony Point passengers that they needed to check the timetables closely to find out their connections were cancelled. All that was needed was a simple dot point or two on the online information and in the printed summer timetable booklet, similar to what has now been added to the PTV website (see above). But as you say, only a small number of passengers make the transfer, and it's no worse than the countless bus connections across Melbourne that will be disrupted during the summer timetable period.

My point however wasn't simply that it wasn't communicated clearly, but also that Metro have put little thought into choosing the cancelled trains to minimise inconveniencing Stony Point passengers. Had Metro cancelled the :13, :33 & :53 inter-peak departures from Flinders St instead of the :03,:23 & :43 services, most of the timetabled connections would have been maintained.

Kind Regards

Well there are now new timetabled connections. Timetables change from time to time and not every feature of them can be maintained. It's something that people have to deal with. An extra 10 minutes is not a big deal when timetables have been made available to the public well in advance, and not just sprung on them on the day.

The Summer holiday bus timetable article has also been updated again to remove the original dates for 605 & 733:
PTV wrote: Summer timetables for bus routes 401, 475, 476, 501, 503, 506, 601, 605 and 733
Added: 16 December 2013

Bus routes 401, 475, 476, 501, 503, 506, 601, 605 and 733 will run to a summer timetable with reduced services.
  • Route 401: buses will run every four to six minutes on weekdays from 25 November 2013 to 14 February 2014. Please note that Route 401 will not run on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day and Australia Day.
  • Routes 475, 476, 501, 503, 506 and 605: summer timetables in effect from 23 December 2013 to 17 January 2014
  • Route 601: buses will run every 12 minutes on weekdays from 22 November 2013 to 17 February 2014. Please note that Route 601 will not run between 23 December and 27 December or on New Year's Day and Australia Day.
  • Route 733: summer timetables in effect from 30 December 2013 to 24 January 2014
Customers should check their timetable and journey planner before they travel.
Unfortunately, Ventura has been tweeting the link to the original article on their twitter feed, that shows the 733 starting the holiday timetable on Friday. One of their tweets, linking to the item containing the wrong set of the dates for other routes, was re-posted to the Metro Trains twitter feed, potentially confusing customers on other routes who may have opened the link. This again highlights the importance of getting these things right the first time.

The 788 timetables are still showing both the normal & summer holiday timetables for Boxing Day & New Years Day. :( The NightRider trips obviously shouldn't be listed for Boxing Day either.
Image

Yet another issue I have uncovered that needs fixing is the 216 timetables for public holidays are currently omitting some of the shortworking variants at the start and end of the day - for instance the Christmas Day timetable is missing 4 trips that commence at Burnside Shopping Centre that are shown on the Sunday timetable.
Image

The issue that M.A.N. 16.242 identified regarding ex Melbourne Bus Link timetable templates still showing the old public holiday operation information on the template is also yet to be fixed.

Kind Regards

Re: 2013/2014 Summer Timetables

Post by Craig »

A very curious news item was posted on the PTV website homepage early this afternoon...

Image
PTV wrote: Christmas Day tram services - Wednesday, 25 December 2013
Added: 24 December 2013

Tram services will operate to a Sunday timetable on Christmas Day. To find out what time tram services are operating on Christmas Day, please check the Sunday timetable for your route.

If using journey planner please select Sunday 29 December to get the correct timetable information for Christmas Day - Wednesday, 25 December.

All public transport on Christmas Day is free.
The article indirectly refers to the fact that the journey planner & website tram timetables are not showing correctly for the festive period - not just tomorrow, but for most days over the next week... :!:

Christmas Day: Monday to Thursday tram timetable shown. Should be Sunday timetable starting with first tram as per weekdays. Route 48 example below.
Image

Boxing Day: Monday to Thursday tram timetable shown. Should be Saturday timetable finishing one hour earlier than usual. Route 55 example below.
Image

Friday 27th Dec: Monday to Thursday tram timetable shown. Should be Saturday timetable with normal finish. Route 67 example below. The last tram should be after 1am on Friday night.
Image

Monday 30th Dec: Monday to Thursday tram timetable shown. Should be Saturday timetable finishing one hour earlier than usual. Route 3/3a example below. Trams will be running as 3a via St Kilda each day from 25/12 to 1/1, but the PTV suggests they will be operating via Route 3...
Image

Tuesday 31st Dec: Monday to Thursday tram timetable shown. Should be Saturday timetable until approx 6pm, then extra trams overnight (ideally also incorporating the service alterations posted above). Route 70 example below, still showing trams operating from Docklands after 6pm and no extra evening trams.
Image

New Years Day No tram timetables available at all. Should be Saturday timetable finishing one hour earlier than usual. Times are also missing from the journey planner - I tried searching for a simple trip like Union Rd Surrey Hills to Kew Junction, only to be presented with bus options, not the direct 109 option.
Image

31st Dec - 24th Jan timetable: Outbound Route 75 timetable is not showing on Monday to Thursday or Friday timetables (other than some early morning car-outs from Camberwell Depot)
Image

I have only posted a single example for each day - the same issue appears on all routes (with the exception of the last one).

There is also still no news item on PTV's website stating that a Saturday timetable applies on the three working days between Christmas & New Years Day...(with earlier finish on the 30th December)

While it's true a large number of passengers rely on the Tramtracker app to find out when the next tram is (which seems to be showing the correct scheduled timetable for Christmas Day & Boxing Day), the incorrect information in the journey planner & online will not be any use to those planning multi-modal trips over the next week, trying to work out tram times in advance when they know frequencies are poor (for instance, every half hour tomorrow morning & evening on most routes) or even just wanting to know when the first or last tram will be...

There seems to be a lack of quality control here - surely both PTV & Yarra Trams should be preforming spot-checks to ensure the timetables are correct & complete as soon they go live to the public? It should have been obvious the wrong timetable for Christmas Day timetable had been uploaded prior to today.

Kind Regards

Re: 2013/2014 Summer Timetables

Post by Craig »

I decided to check the PTV website again late tonight to see if the tram timetables had been corrected at all yet or if an article was added explaning the incorrect timetables for the next few days - not yet, but I wasn't expecting much to be done on a public holiday.

I did notice another update to the Boxing Day article though. 504 is now listed as running a special timetable. In fact, a normal Saturday timetable ran (as correctly shown on the timetable for 504), but the 504, along with the 505, were omiited from the long list.

The article for New Years Day still is missing any reference to 504 or 505.
