Re: Historic Ambulances
I recently investigated what I thought was a sideloader bus sitting on a property 'out west' to find out to my surprise that it was an old NSW Austin Sheerline ambulance with Grice bodywork. The owner told me that only nine were imported as ambulances (I assume he meant for conversion here by Grice) and that he owns four of them. I note boronia mentioned seeing a couple at Bowral when in service and the owner of these units mentioned some also saw service in the west.
A search of Trove came across this SMH article of 27 February 1952: " Lithgow: The ambulance service today took delivery of a new Austin Sheerline ambulance costing (pounds) 2,333 - the only one of its kind in Australia."

Think for yourself, while it's still legal !
Re: Historic Ambulances
There were a few in NSW, Lithgow had one, Bellingen-Coffs Harbour had two, Brisbane Water had one, Coonabarabran had one, Berrima (Bowral) had two and Western Suburbs had one that I know of. In regards to the Lithgow one being the only one of it's kind in 1952, I don't think this is correct because Berrima had a 1951 model.

Re: Historic Ambulances
The Fairlane from that year had a much smarter look than the Falcon.
NSW, the state that embraces mediocrity.

Re: Historic Ambulances
gday everyone, i have recently acquired a 1979 f100 2wd ambulance which is apparently ex tasmanian army but i cant find any information or photos on it. if anyone could help me with even just some photos of how it looked that would be great TIA.
Re: Historic Ambulances
Hi Keggsy,
Not sure if you meant you have an ex Tasmanian Ambulance Service ambulance or Australian Army ambulance based in Tassie. I would try the Army History museum at Bandiana for pics of Army ambulances from that period, or the Tasmanian Ambulance Service if it was a Tassie ambulance. Unfortunately I don't have any pics of either Army or Tassie F100s from that period.

Re: Historic Ambulances
great to see some beautiful old ambo's restored to original and not bastardised - the Farlane is gorgeous btw - I well remember the F100s in the late 80s and still recall the odd one painted in the mustard colour on my interstate express travels - great to see and good luck with restorations - back to original as far as practically possible is the only way to go

1965 AB110 International
A Vehicles Story
Very few vehicles in the fleet of the Queanbeyan District Ambulance Service are as well-known as the “Inter”. The fascination with this vehicle continues today and many web sites and photos feature this vehicle.
In January 1965 a Ford Mainline was decommissioned and a 1965 AB110 International Ambulance costing £1096 pound, 7 & 6 was purchased.
Bodywork was completed by Chrysler and the vehicle was powered by a locally built version of IHC's 240, 264, and 282 cubic inch inline six cylinder engines called the "ABD" or Australian Blue Diamond.
The Australian built trucks also fitted with Lucas electrics, as well as some Australian-made Bosch parts.
At this time most conversions to Ambulance were done by W. S Grice Motor Body Works in Summer Hill Sydney.
The “Inter” as it was mostly referred to was officially commissioned in October and cost over £3000 pound including the vehicles cost and conversion. The vehicle was converted to carry four stretchers at once and brought the fleet at the time to five vehicles.
The Ladies Auxiliary had raised £500 pound to contribute to the purchase and the local newspapers reported the acquisition.
Registration was DXD 055 and the weight of the vehicle and the brake technology of the time made her a real interesting vehicle to drive at high speed with the sirens blaring.
Staff like Station Officer Terrance Maher who served from 1958 - 2004 would often comment on the hairy ride many years later.
Photos taken at the time reveal the siren had been mounted externally on the front bumper.
The Inter was decommisioned in 1980 to be replaced with a Ford F100 bring an end to the era of individualty, all stations were now standardised with the newer vehicles.
She was then sent to Temora NSW where the vehicle was stripped internally, the stretcher racks replaced with two bench seats. The Livery and Paint job externally were kept intact. The lights and number plates were removed from the front bumper but the siren retained.
Housed in the Temora Ambulance Museum with other historic vehicles. The Inter was photographed by enthusiasts and a google search will bring up many examples.
Around 2005 Queanbeyan’s New Ambulance station in Erin Street was opened and with space permitting the Inter was returned home where she was housed amongst the modern Mercedes fleet. Re-registered to allow her back on the roads for display days and history shows the new number plates now show OFN 982.
The vehicle features in articles about recent staff retirements and photos taken on the release of a local book on the History of the Queanbeyan Ambulance Service.
I fondly remember riding in the Inter with my father and it being parked in the driveway when there were no staff quarters in the early days and the on call officers would take the vehicles home.
