New Perth Stadium Transport Plan

Post by Mr OC Benz »

I look forward to seeing the master plan and the design and plans for the upgrade of Belmont Park station. Hopefully including the removal of those long and annoying Claisebrook style access ramps! If all goes to plan, they expect the stadium and upgraded station to be ready for the 2018 AFL premiership season.

Concept design needed for train station to service stadium
$2.7m to conduct environmental studies of adjacent Burswood peninsula

Development of the new Perth Stadium at Burswood has moved another step closer, with the appointment of two key consultants.

Transport Minister Troy Buswell said the State Government’s Public Transport Authority had awarded contracts of a concept design for the railway station to service the stadium, and for a series of environmental studies.

“The Perth Stadium is an exciting project, and the delivery of efficient and effective transport infrastructure will play a critical role in ensuring everyone who uses the new stadium has a great all-round experience,” Mr Buswell said.

“Woodhead has been awarded the $374,000 contract to develop the station project definition plan, which will include a detailed concept design and cost estimate for the construction of the new train station to service the stadium.

“This work will provide certainty on the operational and functional planning; determine the land requirement for the station; establish a construction timeframe; and define the relationship between the station and the stadium.

“The multi-stage environmental contract, worth up to $2.7million, was won by Golder Associates Pty Ltd, to carry out Burswood peninsula environmental studies for the stadium and associated transport infrastructure.

“This will include contamination and estuarine investigations required to obtain environmental approvals for the project.”

I love the idea of all those direct trains extending to the new stadium.....so
I'd like to see the timetable on game day. Anyone (rail gurus) "game" enough to draw up a draft and post it up?

There was an article in The Worst a few months back (http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/br ... 0-million/), which reckons direct services from the new Belmont Park to the Armadale, Thornlie, Fremantle and Joondalup lines plus services to Perth. Those Joondalup trains If they happen are going to be conflicting move central...

Not bad eah? And yet Travers is now moaning about the "lack of" parking; stark contrast to the "too much emphasis" on parking he constantly he harps on about on the rest of the rail network! He is good at opposition and should remain there.
It's a great plan. Hopefully also ferries will shuttle between jetties en route that house clubs, bars or restaurants (God forbid...a ferris wheel and rides) and real life and activity & vibrancy away from the artificially-congested CBD which is a nightmare for traffic (esp. buses).

PTA wrote:New Perth stadium transport plan unveiled

The final piece of the new Perth stadium jigsaw fell into place today when the State Government unveiled details of the Transport Project Definition Plan (PDP).

Premier and State Development Minister Colin Barnett and Transport Minister Troy Buswell announced a $298million bus-train-road-pedestrian plan from which an estimated 50,000 people would be transported from the stadium precinct by public transport networks within an hour of the completion of an event.

An additional $41.2million has been allowed for escalation through to the project’s expected completion in late 2017.

This is in line with modelling that estimated 83 per cent of visitors to the 60,000-seat new Perth stadium would rely on public transport to get to and from events.

The original estimate was based on 70 per cent of stadium visitors using public transport. Despite this, the project falls within the estimated cost released in August at $298million, with the additional passenger numbers incorporated at the same capital cost.

The key elements of the transport plan include a six-platform train station; a staging area able to accommodate 20 buses at a time; and a new pedestrian bridge across the Swan River.

“This is a world-class transport proposal to complement our world-class stadium,” Mr Barnett said.

“The new Perth stadium and the accompanying transport system is a landmark development for the city and one our State has been desperately needing.”

Mr Buswell said the Transport PDP built on the new Perth stadium’s ‘fan first’ philosophy to reflect passenger behaviour and demands through a ‘passenger first’ transport solution.

“To encourage a cultural shift from reliance on cars to public transport, the Government knows it needs to help people leave an event quickly and safely,” he said.

“A ‘tentacles of movement’ model ensures spectators are widely dispersed on exiting the stadium - instead of surging together in one direction - which results in efficient transfers and reduces the impacts on nearby residents.”

As a result of comprehensive planning and passenger modelling by the Public Transport Authority, 35,500 people are expected to depart by train, with 28,000 to use a new, six-platform stadium station and 7,500 to walk across Windan Bridge to an upgraded East Perth Station.

A further 14,300 are expected to travel by bus - 8,100 from a new stadium bus facility and 6,200 from a new shuttle service between the CBD and Nelson Avenue, next to Gloucester Park. This will be accessible from a new pedestrian bridge linking the stadium precinct to East Perth.

“The pedestrian bridge will carry 14,300 people who will access bus services and car parks in East Perth, while the Windan Bridge will allow a further 1,100 to access car parks further north in East Perth,” Mr Buswell said.

“Following discussion with local residents, the Government has accepted their point of view and moved the western end of the pedestrian bridge further south, closer to Gloucester Park.”
For more info, look here.

Key features of the responsive and robust transport solution, to be delivered by late 2017, include:

Dedicated train services

Six-platform Stadium Station for specific destinations for easy transfers.
Nearby stowage for up to 117 railcars to keep a continuous flow of trains following events.
Additional stowage between Great Eastern Highway and Victoria Park Station for 24 railcars for full-attendance events.
Upgraded East Perth Station to accommodate additional passengers on event days.
Various enhancements to network systems and infrastructure in and around Perth Station.

Complementary bus services

Dedicated new Perth Stadium bus facility able to load up to 20 buses at any given time to service suburban areas without rail services.
CBD bus shuttle from Nelson Avenue in East Perth, enabling spectators to access more than 40,000 inner-city car bays.

Bridge entry

A new Swan River pedestrian bridge between the Peninsula and East Perth will take pressure off Windan Bridge and divert pedestrians away from East Perth’s high-density residential area.
It will improve connections between the two areas and attract locals and visitors to the precinct outside of event days.

Enhancing existing infrastructure

Extension of and additional lane to Victoria Park Drive road bridge over expanded rail network.
Improvement of Great Eastern Highway and Victoria Park Drive intersection to accommodate increased bus and vehicle movement.
Coach, taxi and ACROD drop-off facility near the new Perth Stadium.

Transport Plan is available for those interested and includes information of the placement of the six platform station, Stadium Bus Station, pedestrian bridge etc...

They wont (better not) win, as much as I would love a massive rail network, I just can't see any of these plans ever becoming reality. Of course I will eat my hat if they win and do build them but we will know the outcome soon enough!

• Belmont Park Station to close at end of 2013 race season
• To be replaced with Stadium Station, which will service the new Perth Stadium when it opens in 2018
• Stadium Station to feature three island platforms to move 28,000 people by train within one hour of completion of an event

Belmont Park Station will close at the end of the 2013 winter racing season to allow work to begin on the new station that will service the world-class Perth Stadium.

Acting Transport Minister Mike Nahan said the existing special events station would be closed from October 13.

“This is a significant step toward establishing the public transport infrastructure that will enable tens of thousands of fans to enjoy this excellent new venue when it opens in 2018,” Dr Nahan said.

A new six-platform station will replace Belmont Park Station and will be completed in time for the opening of the new Perth Stadium in 2018.

The Liberal National Government last year unveiled details of the bus-train-road-pedestrian plan for the Perth Stadium, which will transport an estimated 50,000 people from the stadium precinct within an hour of an event ending.

The new transport networks will be designed around the same ‘fan first’ philosophy that has driven the development of the stadium. The design will reflect passenger behaviour, with 28,000 people expected to use the six-platform stadium station.

“Stadium Station will feature three island platforms to move passengers to and from the venue in the most efficient way possible,” Dr Nahan said.

Belmont Park Station is a special events station which operates only on race days and other planned events. The closure of the station will not affect other services operating on the Armadale/Thornlie line, which will skip Belmont Park Station and continue to Burswood.

Exactly where do they plan on running these 225 metre 9car trains? 300 metre long trains just what, how and why?

Tender link works fine for me.

The platform length is just allowing for additional capacity in the future I guess. That and perhaps the ability to load up two trains on the one platform so that they are able to depart the station every 2 minutes more reliably. If our next lot of trains have more doors, then this should be less of a problem as it should be faster to load and detrain to help keep them moving at 2 minute intervals.

In the future no doubt our trains will need to be longer and run at closer intervals anyway, so it is good practise to plan for this by having the space allowance between the tracks for platform extensions.

Can any of the Perth platforms handle trains longer than 6 cars?

Yea Perth station can handle 9car sets on platforms 6,7,8 & 9, Fremantle could handle two 6car sets, Kelmscott perhaps could handle a 9car set, it's likely the C series will have more doors and will be a lot longer unfortunately they probably won't be manufactured in Australia.

Officially the last person to tag off the 381 - 20/5/16.
Second last person to tag off the last timetabled 16 - 23/08/19.
Last person to tag off a Transdev Joondalup service - 19/1/20.

To be honest I don't think Kelmscott is that long from memory anyway. There are platform length constraints, because of the design of the bus interchange and level crossing. An easy way to find out would be to see if they have those yellow signs indicating the carriage consist stopping point on the platform and whether there is one for "6".

The Public Transport Authority (PTA) is seeking bus service coordination services for Perth Stadium Events due to the significant bus service scale, and associated management requirements. It is envisaged that at the maximum attendance tier, it is possible that up to 280 buses will need to be mobilised to meet Perth Stadium’s public transport requirement. The bus requirement will consist of a combination of routes servicing key metropolitan centres that are not proximate to urban rail services, as well as Perth CBD shuttle services to provide a connection from the Swan River Pedestrian Bridge to major CBD bus facilities such as Perth Busport and Elizabeth Quay Bus Station, swan transit has been awarded the full contract
