Visited Go Bus Hamilton depot on Sunday and took these photos of Number 72 a 1995 Fairfax bodied MAN 10.150 ex TS7250 and only recently re registered GKE410. This bus caught fire last week in the suburb of Claudelands.as can be seen from the photos the rear of the bus was badly damaged in the fire and will probably not return to service. This bus is powered by CNG and the CNG cylinders are clearly visible above the engine bay.

I'm suprised how bad the damage looks close up.

I wonder if the gas cylanders are placed at the rear for Go Bus 35, 70 and 81 - 87 as well?

It would of been a nice fireworks display if those CNG tanks had gone KABOOM .But the fire certainly made a mess of rear end of 72.Did they say what caused fire to start.

The staff at GoBus did not say what caused the fire nor did they confirm when I asked them if 72 would be scrapped, but looking at the damage and age of bus I think its highly likely that it will.

If the CNG tank was fitted properly, I doubt that would've happened... They're normally pretty protected in the scenario that an infrequent event like this may occur.

It is highly unlikely that the cause of the fire can be determined immediately. Give it time for some investigating and hopefully there is a conclusion as to what happened. Considering the damage is only isolated to the rear, it is quite possible it could return to service because it is still relatively intact and wouldn't require overly too much work (I've seen far worse gas bus fires where the whole body is literally "melted"), but at its age, they may consider it not worth it. Give it time and we'll hear the end result I guess.

The area in which the bus sits is commonly known as the graveyard. Buses in the fleet go there to await parts, sale, transfer or death.

Ah we have one of those in my home town too! Normally lined up with the back fence!

I have however moved this bus from the main Go Bus list and made amendments to the notes to reflect this event.

Is this the first major incident with a Hamilton gas bus?

Over here its as soon as you come into the depot to the left in a special section. Makes the entire depot, including the back look tidy. :)

Probably the first major fire involving a CNG bus since I've been living in Hamilton for the past 12 years.

Does anyone know how the fire started? I can see that the fire started somewhere in the engine bay.

Cheers!

Can anyone confirm if this bus is back on the road? I'm pretty sure I've seen it running around on various school duties with a new rear end.
