Operative words "like this". I have no desire to see Siemens trams up here based on my less than pleasant experiences with them to date. :D

Ours will be about as long though, certainly longer than anything operating elsewhere in Australia.

So sorry to disappoint all those already planning to travel here in April 2018 for the Games but ....don't expect to travel to see the Games action using our wonderful new Light Rail - why? Cause unless you are going to watch netball, you will need to use other forms of transport to get to the other sporting venues - that's right - rugby, wrestling, badminton, track and field, hockey, opening and closing ceremonies will be no where near the Light Rail route - as it is now! Even the aquatic centre and bowls will be over a 1 km walk from the nearest Light Rail station - SIGH!!!
Hindsight is a wonderful thing BUT we did say the planned route would not be productive for the Games and and now there is a big push for a offshoot between Nerang Rail and Broadbeach connecting Carrara Stadium and also I suggest that the route through Southport may be changed to bring the Light Rail closer to the Aquatic Centre...
Hello Bustech - how many of those double deckers could we order in the next 6 years???

The 1982 Brisbane Cth Games did not even see rail to the airport or the main stadium, and most of the network was not electrified at the time.

I'm sure we will manage.

It would take another 3-4 years after 2014 to build another extension to the Light rail/Tram to service the other sporting venues on the Gold Coast by 2018 I look at the positive side not the negative side.Hey if they can build a two line Tramway to service the 2004 Athens Olympic games.

Could the Gold Coast lease BT's super rigids, for the period of the games and whatever elsein 2018 BT has? Given they already have Translink Propoganda already. Now that would be a thought.

The unfortunate thing is it probably won't be locals. They'll put it out to tender and someone from down south or out west (or even a mining operator with all their busses) will come in and win the tender

Anyone having a bit of spare time at the moment - come on down and see how the construction of the light rail is going. Road work on the route is complete from Queen & Wardoo Streets to High & Nerang Streets - one can see the designated corridor for the light rail along with the finished road corridors - we may run out of temporary fencing ...
It was a surprise, but nice surprise, to have Queen Street reopened to eastbound traffic heading towards Southport - this section of road was "closed permanently" when construction started but it appears that plans have been changed - will assume that Beale Street will no longer be extended southwards...buses will not be returning as there is no room for them to stop.
Overall these completed streets look good and it gives the locals a chance to recover before the rails are laid.

YA lightrail track arrived, the track are going start transporting from port brisbane to gold coast by truck to storage it until start laying in months, not lightrail car, it will come in mid 2013.

its from qld media centre by the transport minster.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Scott Emerson

Saturday, May 12, 2012

Heavy work to transport light rail to Gold Coast

Queensland’s first light rail system reached a major milestone this week as 2800 tonnes of rail track is being trucked to the Gold Coast.

The track which stretches 55km for the $1 billion Gold Coast Rapid Transit (GCRT) project is being transported from the Port of Brisbane in preparation for laying along the 13km Stage One route.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Scott Emerson said this milestone reinforced the government’s commitment to delivering the Gold Coast Rapid Transit project.

“This next step gets us closer to delivering the future transport needs of Gold Coast residents,” Mr Emerson said.

“These 18 metre lengths of rail track were made in Austria, shipped into the Port of Brisbane and are now being loaded on to trucks to make its way to a secure storage site on the northern Gold Coast.

“The track laying is expected to begin in coming months.”

The GCRT is being delivered in a Public Private Partnership between the Australian Government, the Queensland Government, Gold Coast City Council and consortium GoldLinQ.

GoldLinQ CEO Phil Mumford said the project was progressing well, with the delivery of the rail on schedule and passenger services on track to start in 2014.

“This project is a mix of world-leading technology and local expertise,” Mr Mumford said.

“Due to the highly specialised expertise and equipment required, the rail was manufactured in Austria by Voestalpine Shienen GmbH.

“It is the only company currently producing the track gauge being used on the Gold Coast light rail system.”

Facts of interest

·It will take 140 semi-trailer trips to transport the tracks to their destination.

·The rail will be used for two lines of light rail track – north and southbound – servicing the Health and Knowledge precinct, the Depot, Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach.

·Fourteen light rail vehicles will operate along the route, with steel wheels fitted to run on the fixed rail.

·There will be 16 stations and the system can cater for up to 75,000 passengers a day.

Gold Coast is ADDING, not DESTROYING, unlike GPT & co.

Postby Newcastle Flyer » Sat May 26, 2012 11:51 am

At least this is a project that is ADDING to public transport, not using it [light-rail] as a false excuse to grab rail land to a CBD, such as greedy developers who are after the Newcastle rail land.

On the NBN TV video (not the NBN federal waste) at about 30s. Sign saying "More Parking, more cars, more customers". I thought the idea is to discourage cars in cities, not encourage more cars. Is it me or do I have a feeling that that sign is being held by someone from a car-oriented business, such as a car yard?

No, just a numpty who thinks that street parking is a better way of bringing in foot traffic than a tram carrying up to 300 people. Traders like that deserve to go out of business.

The rest are for the most part more sensible about it and look forward to the line opening (and their foot counts skyrocketing).

My guess would be that translink will be in charge of operating the transport for the games, which would mean any translink buses that are spare could be used for it :)

I dare say it will be like the Sydney Olympics. Many buses from many operators will be needed to run around the various routes. If the Melbourne Commenwealth games was anything to go by, there was many buses from regional Victoria and metro operators transporting spectators, as well as trams.

First tracks for Gold Coast light rail laid

NOW that the Gold Coast light rail tracks are being laid, it's the clearest sign that the project is a step closer to reality.

A section of track has been completed on the Gold Coast Hwy MacIntosh Island, interesting that was in build whilst on the other side the main straight for the GC600 is being prepared.

Hey. I'd totally trust them with costings and efficiency calculations if they couldn't tell the difference between the numbers 6 and 8.

^ Guys, they are pretty tame these days. They haven't updated that in a while.

The real loonies are the people behind the Residents and Ratepayers Association, but the fire has gone out of them too. Gradually they are all realising how badly they have blown their chance to benefit from this project, now that they have consummately failed to stop or redirect or review it.

Part of me suspects the tracks in the ground in Paradise Waters are there as a kind of taunt to them, whether done consciously or not! If so, bloody good show.
