Victorian Timetable and Service Changes

RailwayBus wrote:Maybe it has been decided that connections off the train to the 812 at the Dandenong end are more important than a change from the 812 to the 811 in the middle of nowhere.

Another explanation may have been they wanted to space 812 & 813 depatures, which have common sections through Yarraman & Keysborough. Under the new timetables, 812 departs Dandenong at :01 past the hour, the 813 at :20 past. This sounds more likely, given there are 10 minute trains in the afternoon.

This can't be said in the other direction though - 812 & 813 will now depart Parkmore towards Dandenong within 4 minutes of each other all day on weekends...

But based on my observations of several trips, there are usually a few passengers that will make this connection at Braeside. If the 812 arrives early and the 811 is running a few minutes late, these connections could now stretch out to over 20 minutes - not somewhere you'd want to wait on your own (or with an unsavoury fellow passenger or two) for that long on the weekend, and makes for a very long journey to Mentone or Southland, especially those along Howard Rd in Dingley Village (probarly better off just walking to their nearest 811 stop now).

Thankfully they have maintained the short transfers in the opposite direction at least (the 812 waits for the 811 to arrive if its running a few minutes late).

National Link wrote:In addition, the 8:00AM shortworking from Southland to Brighton on Saturdays has been deleted for no reason whatsoever, meaning 811/812 passengers wanting to travel into City between any of the stops between Southland and Brighton before 9AM now do not have a service, and have to get the next bus, which does not run through this section until after 9AM.

Incorrect - It sinply runs 10 minutes later. Maybe you were reading the Sunday timetable?

I asked the station project community liaison officer from PTV (former DoT) about this today, she didn't really have an explanation (she might not have even been aware of the issue), although she was more than happy to tell me the 926 would be sent via the station.

There is very little money for improvements to the bus network at this point in time.

It also may have been decided that since the 925 has very little area where it's coverage is outside that of the 926, that it may not have been worth it? The area that is separate to 926 is also within walking distance of the station for the most part.

Not because there's no money, but because the government's priorities are wrong. In addition to promising ridiculous projects of questionable benefit like grade separations at Bayswater and Ormond, they're obsessed with meeting the magical $100 million surplus figure. They could easily spend a quarter of that amount on buses and still get significant service improvements.

But of course, this is Victoria... :?

Which is exactly as I said, very little money for bus improvements. This implies that any funding, if on offer, is being used elsewhere for other projects.

Not to mention flushing money down the toilet on a another pointless rebranding of the signs and vehicles...that amount alone would have covered the cost of extending the 925 to Cardinia Rd and 897 to Lynbrook for several years (or any number of other bus improvements in the outer suburbs).

There's an article on the front page of this week's Diamond Valley Leader suggesting Mt Cooper residents are less than happy with the changes and want their bus back. Usual stuff, people moving to the area because it was near the bus being ripped off, elederly people will be shut in, etc. If I were to be cynical and put two and two together to make 20, between the positive story in the Northern Weekly posted here somewhere about how the changes will cut people's journeys by large amounts of time, the negative story on the front of this week's DVL and the lack of the usual advertisements in the DVL advertising the changes (at least, none I've seen), I would wonder if the advertising contract for PT changes may have been changed recently...

To be honest, I didn't realise how short a distance it is from Plenty Rd to the back of the estate until I walked the whole 4 minutes or so of it up Mt Cooper Drive with a stroller last week. As someone else noted, I suspect given the choice between a 30 minute bus and a 7-8 minute tram, most people would probably walk to the tram (backed up by my own observations waiting for a tram at the Mt Cooper Drive stop over the last 4 years particularly watching the slow but steady stream walking down Mt Cooper Drive to the tram stop) unless the bus goes somewhere the tram doesn't such as Northland. Even then, it would take longer to cross Plenty Rd to the 562 bus stop for most people than walking to Plenty Rd in the first place.

So far I have obtained printed copies of the following printed timetables, all effective April 22 2012 (print dates on rear cover in brackets)

Dysons:
  • 504 Moonee Ponds to Clifton Hill (0312)
  • 505 Moonee Ponds to Melbourne University (0412)
  • 508 Alphington to Moonee Ponds (0412)
  • 513 Eltham to Glenroy (0412)
  • 517 Northland Shopping Centre to St Helena (0412)
  • 518 Greesnborough to St Helena West
  • 520 Doreen to Greesnborough / 572 Doreen to University Hill (0412)
  • 534 Coburg to Glenroy (0312)
  • 536 Gowrie Station to Glenroy (0312)
  • 538 Somerset Estate to Broadmeadows (0312)
  • 540 Upfield to Broadmeadows (0312)
  • 541 Roxburgh Park to Broadmeadows (0412)
  • 542 Roxburgh Park to Oak Park (0312)
  • 546 Heidelberg to Melbourne University (0312)
  • 562 Northland SC to Whittlesea/Humevale (0312)
  • 564 Bundoora RMIT to South Morang (0412)
  • 565 Whittlesea to Kinglake
  • 566 Lalor to Northland SC (0312)
  • 567 Northcote to Regent Station (0412)
  • 569 South Morang to Epping Plaza SC (0412)
  • 573 Bundoora RMIT to Mill Park Lakes/Palisades (0312)

East-West
  • 570 Thomastown to South Morang (0412)

Reservoir:
  • 577 Epping Plaza Shopping Centre - South Morang (0412)

Other than the new format cover (similar to the train timetable booklets but orange), it appears that timetables no longer carry connecting train times - instead there is a note in the general information section suggesting passengers consult the train timetable or the PTV journey planner.

Kind Regards

Invicta have advised me that the 663/691/693 booklet has been withdrawn from circulation & will be reprinted due to errors with the Saturday timetable. Maybe Bradley or someone else who had already picked up a copy can identify what is wrong?

And two other new timetables to report:

462/476 (0412 Kastoria)

732 (0412 Ventura)

There is actually still a limited service along Schotters Rd in Mernda - the peak hour shortworkings are terminating at Mernda are operating via Scothers Rd to turnaround for the trip back to Bundoora. This is the reverse of how the 562 shortworkings used to operate until December last year.

An updated route map is now online showing this, as well as correctly showing the Zone 1+2 overlap south of La Trobe Uni.

Another 22 April timetable picked up from the PTV Info Centre is for route 630 Elwood - Monash University (0312) operated by Eastrans.

As reported on another thread this timetable has already been overtaken by events with the Huntingdale - Monash 630A express trips being replaced by additional trips on the 601 shuttle.
