Double decker license?

Say, I heard that you need a B double license in order to drive a double decker bus. I dont see the logic in this and refuse to believe it. Anyone familiar with the rules?

In a previous post someone had mentioned that a double decker cannot be registerd as a motorhome. At least the Atlantean of 4.5m in height cant. Is there a consensus on this?

A bus can be registered as a motor-home whether it is D/D,S/D or bendy. Try saying that to the owners of the 100s of buses already converted to motor-homes. Who in the heck is spinning this tripe you need a HC or MC licence to drive a D/D and you can`t register a bus as motor-home.

There would not be too many (read NONE) Atlanteans that are 4.5 high, so yes one couldn't be registered. Most old double deckers are 4.4 or less, which is legal.

From what I gather an Atlantean is the highest of all Double Deckers at approx 4.5 metres. As use as a bus it is legal. As use as a motorhome it is overheight and must be lowered to be registered in NSW.

As for Setras, Dennings and Hi Decks they are all approx 4.1 - 4.2

That height restriction mentioned above, is that just for NSW? I suppose there must be similar laws in other states to prevent potential hazards caused by custom 6m high mobile monstrosities roaming the roads.

In the old language, Sydney deckers were 14' 4" high, which equates to 4.36 metres.

I have this urge to import a UK double decker and make a motorhome with it. Suppose it costs me $10,000 to get it here on our roads it will still be cheaper and newer than these $35,000 old Atlanteans which appear to be the only option in Aus.

Im looking at one which measures 4.45m high... Am I going to run into problems registering it as a motorhome?

Well its hard to find the right info on the net. However i did notice this post on another forum which shows that an Atlantean was on its way to becoming registered as a motorhome. Nothing was said about the height being a problem.

As well as NSW, where a vehicle exceeding 4.3m in height is classed as a restricted access vehicle.

Honestly why would you want to convert such a piece of history that may give you endless mechanical woes that you would not be able to sort out due to unavailability or parts in regional aust.

surely a converted coach with highway gearing and air-cond would be more realistic approach for a motorhome, have seen a few old coaches around the stargazer motor home conversions at Heatherbrae near newcastle recently

Those Olympians in Katoomba were 4.6m high. Wonder how that rule was circumvented. 20cm is a lot to lose.

The deckers Ive been looking at were made in the late 80s and early 90s. Quite a few have Cummins engines. Id love to have two floors for a motorhome; theres more space.
