[Jan 2012] SA Transport observations

Adelaide / South Australia Transport Discussion

Tonight at 8:25pm on King William Street a 228F run by a Scania L94UB heading north was spotted with a full standing load. Was this bus 2 hours late or do SouthLink run 'F' buses on Thursday/Friday nights with extra 222s to help with loading?

No doubt the reason was probably a wrong desto code on the driver's run sheet, but still the driver should have checked this first! I'm sure there would have been a few people left behind thinking the bus wasn't setting down until stop 17. This reminds me of a late Saturday night 864 to the city in November or December 2011, which showed CITY 864F.... Seems like LCB aren't the only ones struggling with getting correct destinations to display.
Time to get bus priority and tram priority through the city and suburbs.
Time to police bus lanes which are used by arrogant car drivers.
Time to work for better timetables and better connections.

Proudly returning the ZF scream to the streets of Adelaide!

I have heard that the Government have postponed the idea of electrifying the Outer Harbor line and as a result the lovely Jumbo's will live on. Apparently the Outer Harbor / Grange Lines will become Jumbo haven and Belair using 3000's and some Jumbo's.

Looks like the Jumbo's will have some years to go yet. :D

ive been reading about possible extensions to Roseworthy but not much else.

passing over the tracks on Pt Wakefield Rd this morning, saw what looked like yellow markers to mark where support poles may be. anyone?

also in the most recent edition of Railway Digest they had photos of the progress of the the new bridge for the seaford extension. they noted it was right next door to the old bridge that was built for Willunga Trains. looks about 50-60% done from the pics.

Heard a discussion on %aa this morning between Kevin Naughton of "In Daily" and Leon Byner re the upgrade to the Adelaide to Oaklands Park rail line.It appears that once the Gawler line upgrade is completed in April all the contractors will cease work until Boxing Day when the upgrade will commence.

Could this be due to the conversion of the lines to Port Adelaide,Semaphore Grange and West Lakes to Light Rail?

That would be great to see the Jumbos go on for more years to come, but they are sadly getting to old. And I don't think the Jumbos are allowed to run to Belair due to the gradients on the down, although the Noarlunga line has steep gradients too.
Southlink's two competitors are: 'Scania-City Buses' and 'MAN Transit'. :(

Jumbos run on the Belair line on rare occasions. I think you'll find the reason they are kept away from there 99.9% of the time is due to the tight timetables to follow and with slower acceleration/braking late running on the Belair line can compound and impact services all day. Thus it is best to use all poxboxes on there and only use Jumbos as a last resort. The most common time to see Jumbos on the Belair line is during the Royal Adelaide Show, where 1 afternoon service in particular was a 2-car Jumbo set every weekday.

I saw two Merc's owned by BRU this week; dragged along side one on Salisbury Highway and won...
Yesterday or Today (cant recall exactly when now) I saw 2365 on GA1 to Mawson about 0900ish; i tend to think it was yesterday though as I lost my mind a bit earlier today....
I have seen two Merc artics at eastern side of Scania's and it appears as though they are now being engine stripped??

Tonight at around 10pm i spotted 1756 in Adelaide Fringe Festival livery (red background) at Zone X2 on King William Street doing one of the Arndale routes.
Next station is Keswick, change here for trains to Darwin, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney :-)

When was that? Certainly was not the 2011 Royal Adelaide Show.

And I don't really see why its a good thing that Jumbos life is extended. They are old as the hills! If they get relegated to OH then they better revise the timetable for it..

Definitely in 2010... and lol!!! The Outer Harbor timetable is tight enough as it is! And some platforms may have to be shaved a little if wobbling Jumbos are to be heading through there more frequently....

Ummmm, no you didn't. 1756 is a Torrens Transit bus (in Adelaide Free livery) and TT buses do not run any services from the City to Arndale, let alone stop at X2 at any time. 1754, on the other hand.... (and this has already been posted earlier anyway)

Its not so much the platform issue, its more the issue that Jumbos passing Jumbos at speed through Bowden, Croydon and Alberton can wobble and glance EACHOTHER as they pass. Its a bit hard to see as a passenger but if you are right up the front you can see the line narrows together as it goes through those stations.

Yes, those platform clearances are a problem, not to mention the abandoned Cheltenham Racecourse station. It wouldn't hurt for the State Government to perhaps rebuild one of the two platforms at those stations to make for a wider clearance for passing trains.

Cheltenham Racecourse is set to be demolished and rebuilt when the OH / Grange lines close down for the electrification, but apparently this isn't to happen until 2016....anyone?

Are you saying that you won or one of the BRU Mercedes won? In the event that you are saying that a BRU Merc won, I would see this as plausible as in the event of two buses travelling in the same direction in normal traffic conditions it would be inevitable that at some point either vehicle may need to brake, adjust speed, slow for traffic, maintain/ raise or decrease to the speed limit.

With this bearing in mind it would be suggest that one of the two vehicles would at one point pass the other to take the lead and in your view 'win'.

If you passed both buses in your car, well done.

Southern Expressway only closed for a few hours and only for the next TWO days, just to set up some barriers. Don't get too upset. I'm sure as the duplication work happens there'll be a few more interruptions.
