Glenelg Tram In Hindmarsh Square, Adelaide

Post by baytram366 »

... well part of one anyway. The front of former Glenelg Tram H type tram 374 in Hindmarsh Square being used as a billboard for the Sunday Markets. Considering it was sold in 2008 for over $600 it makes a pretty expensive advertising medium.

and unfortunately it's probably the closest you're going to get these days to seeing a 'H'-type tram in the City!

Yeah good point. That really is sad considering they can still run and the ones that Glengowrie have are in semi good condition...

Main body was refurbished in the early 2000's and was withdrawn from service in c. 2005 owing to structural damage after a derailment; was rebuilt and returned to the depot where it sat around, seeing no service and it has now ultimately been sold to Old Tailem Town at Tailem Bend for an exhibit.

I know the guy who has 374. Bloke by the name of Ivan Wood...he originally put his hand up for all the H Types that were up for sale but only got 374. Shortly after taking delivery to the old girl it was vandalized, however damage was not too substantial and it is now in storage awaiting the completion of his Railway track he is completing.

No; the new owner got a complete tram, with a body and two cabs. The cab shown in Hindmarsh Sq was removed from the tram when it was refurbished a decade ago - and a new one built in its place. An easy way of telling; The new cab has BMAC taillights on either side of the cab; whereas the cab in Hindmarsh Sq as you can see only had a "Stop" sign with associated circular red reflective marker (reflective marker since removed)

Also the headlights were slightly smaller on the non-refurb fronts but now thats just getting picky :D
So 374 isn't on display yet at Old Tailem Town? If I go down there over the next month can I still see it or is it locked away somewhere?

No I don't think it is- but I believe once Ivan has finished his railway, which might not happen until well after the new year, I believe it will be on display but in a safe place :-)
