Interesting that MBL will be running a slightly shorter holiday timetable on 216, 219 & 220 than other routes - normally all routes run to the same holiday timetable period. And rather disappointing that the holiday timetable will continue until late January as per previous years - I do hope this will be addressed in the new tenders.

Confused as to why the notice states that 460 will be running a Sunday timetable on December 27 - public holidays in lieu are generally considered a Saturday timetable for MoTC routes. The Metlink website shows a Saturday timetable will be operating. :?

Kind Regards

It seems odd to put up signs in the buses in november but not have any new timetables to handout. Metlink doesnt have them either online or over the phone. Not very good. Does anyone know what the impact on peak hour melb bus link services under the summer time table will be?

Summer holiday bus timetables are now online on the Metlink website, including:

Nationalbus (28/12/11 - 6/1/12) - Routes 200, 201, 202, 203, 207, 246, 250, 251, 253, 270, 271, 273, 279, 281, 284, 285, 286, 293, 295, 302, 303, 309, 313, 315, 340, 350, 366 & 367. Normal timetables on Routes 235, 237, 238, 280, 282, 305, 318, 364, 905, 906, 907 & 908. Not clear what is happening with 205 - normally this doesn't run over these two weeks.

Melbourne Bus Link (28/12/11 - 13/1/12) - Routes 216, 219 & 220. This is incorrect, as the Saturday holiday timetable operates on 14/1/11.

Melbourne Bus Link (28/12/11 - 20/1/12) - Routes 215, 223, 232, 460, 600, 922 & 923. This is incorrect, as the Saturday holiday timetable operates on 21/1/11.

Kastoria (28/12/11 - 20/1/12) - Routes 475, 476 & 501. Normal timetable on Route 462.

Moonee Valley (28/12/11 - 20/1/12) - Routes 503 & 506.

Hope St (28/12/11 - 20/1/12) - Route 509.

Eastrans (28/12/11 - 20/1/12) - Route 605

Ventura (27/12/11 - 31/1/11) - Route 733. For some reason, the reduced peak holiday timetable will operate for 5 & half weeks this year, instead of the usual 4 weeks.

Kind Regards

From the 561 timetable thread:
Matty G wrote:Note on the Metlink 561 timetable:

"Note: Route 561 does not run public holidays, with the following exceptions: 1. Labour Day and Cup Day: Saturday timetable applies. 2. Service will run on a public holiday where the public holiday falls on a day that requires that a substitute public holiday be provided. Service will operate to that days regular timetable, with no service on the designated public holiday".

Has anyone heard anything more stupid??
The appropriate public holiday timetable should be run on said days regardless! Must be another cost saving measure by the Government.
Did Metlink or DoT's lawyers write that jargon filled note?

In slightly more simple english, it means is that if a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, a normal Saturday or Sunday will still apply on the actual date of the holiday. On the substitute public holiday however, there is no service, as 561 doesn't run most public holdays. As an example, Christmas Day falls on a Sunday this year, so a Sunday service is provided on the 25th. However on the 27th, the substitute public holiday, 561 won't run.

One has to wonder how much extra money it would cost DoT to fund 8 additional days of service to bring the route in line with the normal minimum standards public holiday pattern. I guess we should be grateful that the route runs on Sundays though, as this wasn't initially funded when the route extension was announced.

Just to show how inconsistent DoT is, here's some other examples:
Route 681 or 682 (the only routes that have a Sunday service but don't run public holidays) don't run on public holidays that fall on a Sunday
Routes 605 & 684 won't run on Christmas Day (as per every other year).
Route 460 will run a Saturday timetable on the 26th, but a Sunday timetable on the 27th, despite all other minimum standards routes running to a Saturday timetable on Christmas Day Holiday
Routes 481, 485, 486, 487, 488 & 489 in Sunbury run to a Sunday timetable on all public holidays, despite being upgraded to minimum standards span
Several Ventura & Nationalbus routes that don't conform to the minimum standards span (some which don't even run Sundays, such as 273 or 766), run to the minimum standards public holiday pattern

The CDC website has a nice table that shows the variations at each of their depots - http://cdcvictoria.com.au/services.html - even more variations when comparing to regional cities!

Maybe one day the bus network can have a single approach for public holidays like the train & tram networks. The minimum standards rollout has been a good start, but we are still only two-thirds there. I won't hold my breath waiting for that day to arrive.

Full timetables are already on the Metlink website and have been so for over a week. My bad for not writing a post when I first saw them.

On each line's timetable, open the timetable for December 31 2011 which shows the extra services through to 8am the following day (when the normal Sunday timetable will commence).

Obviously not the best format to present the information. A poster for each group would be more appropriate.

Other than cramming it with times, it's unclear reading that poster that trains on all lines serve Southern Cross after 12am while Flagstaff, Melbourne Central & Parliament are closed overnight.

And bad luck if you don't understand the shuttle trains - it looks as if the last train to Cranbourne is at 01:42, there are only trains every 2 hours beyond Ringwood after 3am and there are no late night trains at all to Williamstown or Alamein. I know this is not the case, but someone who doesn't travel on weekends or at night on a regular basis could easily be fooled.

Kind Regards

Metlink website summary. I note my comments in my post from last week regarding MBL and 733 seem to have been addressed in the website article, but not on the timetable pages yet.

Who on earth designs summer timetables? Some of the temporary alterations are utterly moronic, like take route 271 which has a last bus of 11:14pm in the regular timetable, but in the summer timetable the last seven services of the evening are trashed, so it's at 7:09pm.

And there's far more demand for people coming home late at night when it's warm in summer, for part of which there's no service at all, than in the middle of winter on freezing cold nights, when of course a service does exist every 30 minutes.

Same goes back for the various routes with the weekday off-peak services cut back from every 30 to 60 minutes or similar, it's that time of year when you have more utilisation throughout the day cos people are doing stuff while they're off work/school, if they're going to trash services they should be ones in the commuter peaks.
